Apple Pay in casino apps

Apple Pay is Apple’s payment service that lets you pay with a card stored in the Wallet on your iPhone, confirming each payment with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode. In UK casino apps it works as a quick way to deposit from a debit card, and several partner apps also let you withdraw back to it.

Key takeaways

  • Apple Pay pays from a card in your Wallet; the merchant doesn’t receive your actual card number.
  • You confirm each payment with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode.
  • Apple says it charges no fees for Apple Pay, though your bank may charge for overseas use.
  • Coral, Ladbrokes and Casumo list Apple Pay for deposits and withdrawals; PlayOJO names it on its help page.
  • The UK credit card ban still applies, so use a debit card in your Wallet for gambling.

What Apple Pay is

Apple Pay is a way to pay in shops, online and inside apps using cards you’ve added to the Wallet app. On an iPhone you pay by confirming on the device itself. Apple’s Apple Pay page (opens in a new tab) describes the service and the devices it works on.

It isn’t an e-wallet in the usual sense, because it doesn’t hold a balance. Each payment is taken from the underlying card, so for a casino deposit that means the debit card you chose in Wallet.

How Apple Pay protects your card details

Apple’s security and privacy overview (opens in a new tab) says Apple doesn’t store your original card numbers. Instead, a Device Account Number is kept in a secure chip on your device, and payments are authorised with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode.

How to deposit with Apple Pay in a casino app

  1. Add a UK debit card to Wallet on your iPhone if it isn’t there already.
  2. Open the casino app’s cashier and choose Apple Pay.
  3. Enter the amount, checking any minimum the cashier shows.
  4. Confirm with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode when the payment sheet appears.
  5. Check your casino balance has updated before you play.

Apple Pay and the UK credit card ban

Since 14 April 2020, businesses licensed in Great Britain haven’t been allowed to accept gambling payments by credit card, including through a money service business. Apple’s pages don’t mention gambling, but because Apple Pay simply charges the card you pick, a credit card in Wallet is still a credit card. Choose a debit card for any casino payment.

Some banks’ gambling blocks reach Apple Pay too. HSBC’s debit card gambling restriction (opens in a new tab) says it covers digital wallets as well as in-store and online card payments. Our bank gambling blocks guide covers other banks.

Frequently asked questions

Can you use Apple Pay at UK casino apps?

Yes, at many of them. Coral, Ladbrokes and Casumo list Apple Pay for both deposits and withdrawals, and PlayOJO names it on its help page. You confirm each deposit with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode, and the money comes from the card in your Wallet. Availability can change, so check the cashier. Our page on which casino apps accept Apple Pay keeps a fuller list.

Can I withdraw to Apple Pay from a casino app?

At some apps, yes. Coral, Ladbrokes and Casumo list Apple Pay as a withdrawal method, and Casumo says Apple Pay withdrawals are paid instantly once approved. Each operator runs its own approval first, and the money goes back via the card linked to Apple Pay. Apps that don’t list Apple Pay withdrawals will offer another method. See our guide to how long casino app withdrawals take.

Does Apple Pay charge fees for casino deposits?

Apple says it doesn’t charge fees for using Apple Pay, though your bank may charge for overseas use. Any other fee would come from the casino’s own terms. Coral and Ladbrokes say they charge no withdrawal fees, while Casumo charges £3 on withdrawals under £10. Check the cashier before you pay. Our withdrawal fees guide compares what partners publish.

Can I use a credit card through Apple Pay to gamble?

No. Gambling with a credit card has been banned in Great Britain since 14 April 2020, and Apple Pay simply charges whichever card you select. Even though Apple lets you add credit cards to Wallet, a licensed casino shouldn’t accept a credit card payment. Use a debit card for deposits. Read more about the rule on our credit card ban page.

Does Apple Pay work for casino welcome offers?

Often it does, but check the terms each time. Apple Pay isn’t among the named excluded methods for Coral’s or Ladbrokes’ welcome offers, although Coral also excludes certain debit cards, which may matter for the card behind Apple Pay. PlayOJO’s offer requires a first deposit of at least £10. Read our guide to claiming a bonus in a casino app before depositing.
