Face ID

Face ID is Apple's face recognition system for iPhone and iPad, used to open the device, approve payments and sign in to apps that support it. When a casino app offers Face ID login, your iPhone does the face check and tells the app only whether it succeeded; the app never sees your face data.

Key takeaways

  • Face ID is Apple's facial recognition for opening devices and signing in to apps.
  • Apple says Face ID data never leaves your device and is never available to apps or to Apple.
  • The chance of a random person matching is less than 1 in 1,000,000 with one enrolled appearance, according to Apple.
  • Casumo's iPhone listing mentions Face ID login; Coral, Ladbrokes, PlayOJO and 10bet listings don't.

Face ID explained

Face ID uses the iPhone's front camera system to map your face and compare it with the version you registered. If it matches, the phone proceeds; if not, it falls back to your passcode. It's one form of biometric login, alongside Touch ID's fingerprint sensor on other Apple devices.

Apple describes Face ID and Touch ID as advanced security technologies that protect information (opens in a new tab) on iPhone, iPad and Mac, and notes that developers can let you use them to sign in to their apps. That's the feature casino apps can tap into. Other device terms are in our casino app glossary.

What a casino app sees when you use Face ID

This is the point most people want settled. Apple's Face ID security page (opens in a new tab) says the face data is encrypted with a key available only to the Secure Enclave, doesn't leave your device and is never available to apps or to Apple. Apps are told only whether authentication succeeded.

Face ID in a casino app: what is and isn't shared
ItemShared with the casino app?
Your face map or photoNo
The mathematical face dataNo, it stays in the Secure Enclave
Whether the Face ID check passedYes
Your account detailsAlready held by the casino from sign-up
Your identity documentsOnly if you upload them for verification, separately

Apple puts the chance of a random person matching your face at less than 1 in 1,000,000 with a single enrolled appearance. For comparison, that's a much smaller chance than guessing a four-digit passcode at random (1 in 10,000).

Face ID on UK casino apps

The App Store listings give the clearest published picture. Casumo's iPhone app (opens in a new tab) states support for Face ID and Touch ID login, alongside features like quick launch of your last four slots. The listings for Coral, Ladbrokes, PlayOJO and 10bet don't mention it.

How to use Face ID with a casino app

  1. Set up Face ID on your iPhone first, in the phone's Settings app.
  2. Install the casino app from the App Store and sign in with your password.
  3. Look in the app's account or security settings for a Face ID or quick sign-in option, if it has one.
  4. Accept the iPhone's prompt asking whether the app may use Face ID.
  5. Close and reopen the app to confirm it works; your password remains as a fallback.

Face ID and your gambling habits

Face ID makes a casino app almost instant to open. For some people that's simply convenient; for others it removes a useful pause. If you find yourself opening the app without meaning to, go back to password sign-in, use Screen Time to limit the app, or set a deposit limit. Face ID also has nothing to do with the age and identity checks UK casinos must complete before you can deposit.

Frequently asked questions

What is Face ID?

Face ID is Apple's face recognition system on iPhone and iPad. It compares your face with the version you registered and, if they match, opens the device, approves a payment or signs you in to an app. Apple says the data is protected by the Secure Enclave and never leaves the device. It's one type of biometric login, alongside fingerprint sign-in.

Can casino apps see my face with Face ID?

No. Apple says Face ID data is encrypted, stays on your device and is never available to apps or to Apple. The casino app is told only whether the check passed, then opens your account. If a casino asks for a photo or selfie for identity checks, that's a separate upload you'd make yourself. See how casino apps verify your identity for what those checks involve.

Which casino apps let me log in with Face ID?

Of the partner apps we review, Casumo's App Store listing says it supports Face ID and Touch ID login. The Coral, Ladbrokes, PlayOJO and 10bet listings don't mention it, which doesn't rule it out, so check the app's settings after you sign in. Our answer to can you log in to a casino app with Face ID explains where to look.

Is Face ID more secure than a password?

It's harder to copy than a password someone might see you type, and Apple puts the chance of a random match at under 1 in 1,000,000 with one enrolled appearance. But your password still exists as a fallback, so keep it strong and unique, and consider two-factor authentication where offered. Read choosing a strong casino password for practical advice.

Does Face ID work for deposits in casino apps?

Face ID can confirm Apple Pay payments, so if a casino app accepts Apple Pay, you may approve a deposit with your face. Whether an app offers Apple Pay depends on the operator; Casumo's listing mentions it, for example. Logging in and paying are separate uses of Face ID. See how to deposit with Apple Pay in a casino app.

Can I turn off Face ID for a casino app only?

Yes. Your iPhone lets you choose which apps may use Face ID, so you can switch it off for the casino app while keeping it for everything else. You'll then sign in with your password. Some people do this to add a pause before playing. Our page on blocking casino apps with Screen Time covers stronger controls.
