How mobile casino games work

Mobile casino games are the same games you'd find on a desktop site, delivered through an app or browser. Most are RNG games, where certified software produces each result, while live games stream a real dealer from a studio. The maths doesn't change with the screen: a European roulette wheel has 37 pockets on a phone just as it does anywhere else.

What does change is how you play. Betting layouts are compressed, some games are built for portrait mode, and UK rules set a minimum speed for each game round. Our page on RNG casino games explains how results are produced and tested.

A small screen also makes it easier to lose track of time, which is why UK apps must show your net spend and session time as you play.

House edge in mobile casino games

The house edge is the share of each stake the casino expects to keep over the long run. It's the single most useful number for comparing games, and it comes from the rules and pay table, not from the device. The figures below are from standard game maths published by Wizard of Odds (opens in a new tab).

What mobile casino games cost in pounds

Expected loss is the stake multiplied by the house edge. A £1 bet on European roulette costs 2.7p on average. If you place 100 bets of £1, you've staked £100 and the expected loss is £2.70. The same £100 staked on the Banker bet in baccarat has an expected loss of £1.06, and on American roulette £5.26.

Expected loss is an average, not a forecast. Any single session can go either way, which is why a budget matters more than a system. No betting system changes the house edge, as our blackjack strategy on mobile page explains: basic strategy reduces the edge but can't remove it.

UK rules for mobile casino games

  • Speed: casino games other than slots must allow at least 5 seconds per game cycle (from 17 January 2025). Slots must take at least 2.5 seconds per spin.
  • No autoplay: banned for all online casino games from 17 January 2025, and for slots since 31 October 2021.
  • One game at a time: you can't play several casino games at once.
  • Real-time totals: net spend and time spent must be shown while you play.
  • Slot stakes: £5 per spin for players aged 25 and over, £2 for those aged 18 to 24.

These rules explain why multi-game screens have disappeared from UK apps. See game speed rules and the autoplay ban for the detail.

Choosing mobile casino games that suit you

Start with the game you enjoy, then check the version. European roulette has half the edge of American roulette, and blackjack rules vary from table to table. RTP on mobile is the same as on desktop for the same game version; check the game's help screen to confirm, as our page on whether RTP is the same on mobile explains.

For the table classics, read the blackjack app guide, roulette app guide and baccarat app guide. For streamed tables and game shows, visit live casino apps, and for reels, our mobile slot reviews.

18+. Every casino game has a built-in house edge, so over time you should expect to lose what you stake. Set a budget before you play and stop when it’s gone: safer gambling tools and support. Free, confidential help: National Gambling Helpline 0808 8020 133.

Frequently asked questions

Which mobile casino game has the lowest house edge?

Among common games, blackjack and video poker have the lowest house edge when played with the right strategy. Six-deck European-rules blackjack has a 0.62% edge with basic strategy, and 9/6 Jacks or Better video poker returns 99.54% with optimal play. The Banker bet in baccarat is next at 1.06%. Our house edge by game page compares them all, and the video poker apps guide explains the pay tables.

Is RTP lower on casino apps than on websites?

Not by default. A game's RTP is set by its version and pay table, and the same version returns the same on an app, a mobile site or a desktop. Some games come in several RTP versions, so check the game's help screen for the figure that applies. UK rules require that information to be available. Read is RTP lower on casino apps and how to find a game's RTP in an app.

Can I play two casino games at once on my phone?

No, not at UK-licensed casinos. Since 17 January 2025, the Gambling Commission's rules have stopped players from playing several online casino games at the same time. The rule is part of a wider set of changes that also banned autoplay for all casino games and set a minimum of 5 seconds per game cycle for non-slot games. See can I play two casino games at once on mobile and our game design rules page.

Does basic strategy beat the house in mobile blackjack?

No. Basic strategy is the mathematically best way to play each hand, and it reduces the house edge to well under 1% in many games, but the casino keeps an edge. Online RNG blackjack also reshuffles every hand. Use strategy to make your budget last, not to expect a profit. Our blackjack strategy on mobile page and the best blackjack apps list cover it in more depth.

Which roulette should I play on a casino app?

Choose a single-zero game if you can. European roulette has a 2.70% house edge on every standard bet, while American roulette, with its extra double zero, has 5.26%. French rules with La Partage cut the edge on even-money bets to about 1.35%. Check the table's rules in the game's help screen. Read the European roulette on mobile page and the best roulette apps list.

Are mobile casino games fair?

Games at UK-licensed casinos must meet the Gambling Commission's technical standards, and RNG games are tested by approved test houses. Live games use real equipment and dealers. That doesn't mean you'll win: every game carries a house edge, so losses are likely over time. Our pages on RNG casino games on mobile and do casino apps rig games explain the checks.
