Autoplay: meaning and the UK ban

Autoplay is a game setting that plays a run of spins or rounds for you, one after another, without you pressing start each time. UK casino apps don't offer it: autoplay has been banned on online slots since 31 October 2021 and on all online casino games since 17 January 2025. Every round now has to be started by you.

Key takeaways

  • Autoplay ran a chosen number of spins or rounds automatically at a fixed stake.
  • It has been banned on UK online slots since 31 October 2021.
  • The ban reached all online casino games on 17 January 2025; auto-posting blinds in peer-to-peer poker is the exception.
  • Each game cycle must now be started individually, and on slots you must release and press start again.

Autoplay meaning

With autoplay, you chose a stake and a number of rounds, often with stop conditions, and the game then ran on without further taps. Its appeal was convenience. Its risk was that money was committed in bulk while your attention could drift.

It's one of several speed features in our casino app glossary, alongside turbo spin and slam stop, all now removed from UK games.

Is autoplay allowed on UK casino apps?

No. The Commission's summary of the 2021 changes to its technical standards (opens in a new tab) puts it in one line under RTS 8C: providing autoplay for slots is not permitted. The 2025 changes then applied the same principle to other casino games, so each game cycle must be started on its own.

The only carve-out in the rules is the automatic posting of blinds in peer-to-peer poker. Our rule page on the autoplay ban in the UK covers the detail.

Why autoplay was removed

The Commission's announcement of the 2025 rules (opens in a new tab) described the changes as limits on the speed and intensity of online games. Autoplay was the clearest example of intensity: a single tap could commit dozens of stakes.

Simple arithmetic shows the scale. An autoplay run of 100 spins at £1 committed £100 of stakes in one decision. On a slot with a 96% RTP, the expected loss on that run is £4, but the real result could be far worse, and nobody had to press anything to keep it going.

What you see instead of autoplay

On slots, the Commission's RTS 14 on responsible product design (opens in a new tab) requires at least 2.5 seconds between the start of one spin and the next, and you must release and press the start button again. Other casino games need at least 5 seconds per game cycle.

  • A spin button that has to be pressed for every round.
  • Your net position and elapsed time shown on screen during play.
  • Reality checks at a frequency you can choose.
  • No option to play several games at once.

Our guide on why there is no autoplay on UK casino apps explains what that looks like in practice, and online game design rules lists the full set.

Playing without autoplay on a phone

  1. Decide on a session length and a stake before you open the app.
  2. Set a deposit limit and a reality check in the app's account settings.
  3. Press spin for each round and glance at the net position shown on screen.
  4. Stop when the reality check appears or your planned time is up.

For the time side, see reality checks in casino apps.

Slot apps with welcome spins, played one spin at a time

None of these offers changes the autoplay rule: every spin in a UK app still needs its own press. They're slot spin offers, so table and live games aren't part of them. 18+ and terms apply to each.

Frequently asked questions

What does autoplay mean on a slot?

Autoplay is a setting that spins the reels automatically for a chosen number of rounds at a fixed stake, without you pressing spin each time. It has been banned on UK online slots since 31 October 2021, so you won't find it in a casino app licensed in Great Britain. Our explainer on why there is no autoplay on UK apps covers the reasons.

Is autoplay banned on live casino and table games too?

Yes, for online casino games. From 17 January 2025, the Commission extended the autoplay ban beyond slots to all online casino games, so each game cycle has to be started individually. The one exception in the rules is auto-posting blinds in peer-to-peer poker. Non-slot casino games also need at least 5 seconds per game cycle, explained in game speed rules.

Why can't I find an autoplay button in my casino app?

Because UK rules don't allow one. Apps from operators licensed by the Gambling Commission must make you start every round yourself, and on slots you must release and press the button again between spins. That isn't a fault in the app. If something else seems wrong, our casino app not working guide covers common problems.

When did the UK ban autoplay?

In two steps. Autoplay on online slots was banned from 31 October 2021, under rules the Commission published in February 2021. The ban was extended to all other online casino games from 17 January 2025, as part of a wider package on game speed and intensity. The full timeline is on our autoplay ban rule page.

Is autoplay the same as turbo spin?

No. Autoplay starts rounds for you, while turbo spin made each round finish faster by shortening the reel animation. Both raise the pace of play, and both are banned on UK slots: autoplay under RTS 8C and turbo under RTS 14E, which also covers slam stop. See turbo spin for how that rule works.

Can I still play quickly without autoplay?

Only within the speed limits. UK slots must allow at least 2.5 seconds per spin, which caps play at 1,440 spins an hour if you pressed instantly every time. Other casino games need at least 5 seconds per round. A session limit or reality check helps keep a fast pace from turning into a long, costly session.
