Cashback: meaning in casino apps
Cashback in a casino app is a promotion that gives you back a share of what you lost, or of what you staked, over a set period. It reduces the cost of play rather than turning a loss into a profit, and the details that matter are the rate, whether it’s paid as cash or bonus funds, and any wagering attached.
Key takeaways
- Cashback returns a percentage of net losses or of stakes, paid as cash or as bonus funds.
- Cash cashback is yours to withdraw; bonus cashback can carry wagering of up to 10x.
- It lowers the cost of play but doesn’t remove the house edge.
- PlayOJO’s OJOplus is a money-back feature on every game played; check the terms for the rate.

Cashback meaning in casino apps
Cashback is a refund-style reward. The casino works out how much you lost, or how much you staked, over a day, week or session, and returns a percentage of it. If you won overall in that period, loss-based cashback usually pays nothing, because there’s no loss to refund.
It is a promotion, so its terms decide everything: which games count, the period, the rate, any cap and how the money arrives. Our casino app glossary covers the related terms, such as wagering requirement and no wagering.
Types of casino cashback
| Type | How it’s worked out | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Loss-based cashback | A percentage of net losses over a set period | How ‘net loss’ is defined and the period it covers |
| Stake-based money back | A small share of every stake, win or lose | The rate per game type and when it’s credited |
| Cash cashback | Paid into your cash balance | Usually withdrawable straight away |
| Bonus cashback | Paid as bonus funds | Wagering (capped at 10x), expiry and eligible games |
The difference between cash and bonus cashback is the one to watch. Our page on whether casino app winnings are paid in cash explains how the two balances behave.
Cashback in pounds: a worked example
The rates here are illustrative, not any casino’s actual offer. Say you stake £200 in a week on slots with a 96% RTP. Standard game maths puts your expected loss at £8 (£200 × 4%). With 10% cashback on net losses, your average return would be about 80p, leaving an expected cost of roughly £7.20.
In a real week the result swings. If you finish £50 down, 10% cashback returns £5 and you’re £45 down. If you finish £30 up, loss-based cashback pays nothing. Either way, the house edge is still working on every spin; cashback trims the cost, it doesn’t reverse it.
Cashback is never a reason to play longer or stake more. Chasing a cashback threshold usually means more money staked and a bigger expected loss, which outweighs the share returned.
UK rules that apply to cashback
Cashback is an incentive, so it falls under the Commission’s rewards and bonuses code, SR code 5.1.1 (opens in a new tab). Several rules follow from that.
- 10x cap: since 19 January 2026, any wagering on bonus funds can’t be more than 10 times the bonus. The Commission explains the change in its safer and simpler promotions (opens in a new tab) announcement.
- One product: an incentive can’t mix gambling products, so a single cashback deal can’t combine, say, casino losses and sports bets.
- No bigger reward for faster play: an incentive can’t be increased because you hit the qualifying spend sooner. There’s no 2026 ban on offers linked to time, but this rule remains.
- Clear terms: significant conditions must be shown up front, and you must opt in rather than be enrolled automatically.
- Harm signs: where there are strong signs of harm, operators must stop marketing and new bonus take-up, which can include cashback.
Our pages on the 10x wagering cap and the mixed product bonus ban explain both rules in detail.
Cashback in our partner casino apps
Among our partners, the clearest example is PlayOJO. Its operator, Skill On Net Limited, describes OJOplus as money back on every game played, and the app listing calls it money-back on every bet. That makes it stake-based rather than loss-based: you get a share back whether a spin wins or loses. The rate and any game exclusions are set out in PlayOJO’s terms, so check them in the app; our PlayOJO app review covers it alongside the rest of the app.
For Coral and Ladbrokes, the app listings mention rewards such as Smart Rewards, Rewards Grabber, Coral Coins and LadBucks rather than a standing cashback scheme. We didn’t find a published cashback offer for Casumo or 10bet either. Promotions change, so check each app’s promotions area, and see our list of casino apps with cashback.
How to check a cashback offer before you opt in
- Find out whether it’s based on losses or on stakes.
- Check the percentage, any cap in pounds and the period it covers.
- See whether it’s paid as cash or as bonus funds.
- If it’s bonus funds, note the wagering (10x at most), the expiry and the eligible games.
- Check which games and payment methods are excluded.
- Confirm you have to opt in, and that you can withdraw your own deposit balance at any time.
Cashback and related reward terms
- Loyalty points: points earned per stake and swapped for rewards.
- Wagering cap: the 10x limit on bonus play-through.
- Welcome bonus: the sign-up offer, usually separate from cashback.
- Net deposits: deposits minus withdrawals, a different figure from net losses.
Partner offers alongside cashback
None of the three welcome offers below is a cashback deal; they’re slot spin offers with no wagering on winnings. PlayOJO adds OJOplus money back on top as a standing feature. 18+ and terms apply to all three.
- PlayOJO: new UK customers (not Northern Ireland) who make a first deposit of £10 or more get 80 free spins on Big Bass Bonanza, 10p each, with cash winnings and no wagering. Designated offer link only; not combinable with other offers.
- Coral: new players from 1 October 2026 to 1 February 2027 who deposit (certain types excluded) and bet £10+ on slots receive 100 free spins at 10p on selected games, to accept within 48 hours and use within 7 days. No wagering on spin winnings. Neteller, PayPal, Paysafe, Skrill, prepaid cards and certain debit cards are excluded.
- Ladbrokes: deposit and spend £10+ on slots as a new customer to get 50 free spins a day for 10 days, capped at 500, at 10p. Claim daily by 23:59; spins expire after 7 days; no wagering. Prepaid cards, PayPal, Paysafe, Neteller, Skrill and Moneybookers don’t qualify.
Coral and Ladbrokes have the same operator, so you may only be able to open a new account with one. Spin offers and cashback reduce the cost of play but don’t change the odds, so losses are still likely over time.

Coral and Ladbrokes are both run by LC International Limited (Entain). If you already hold an account with one Entain brand, you may not be able to open another; check the terms first.

Frequently asked questions
What does cashback mean at a casino?
Cashback means the casino returns a percentage of your losses, or of your stakes, over a set period. Loss-based cashback pays only if you’re down overall; stake-based money back pays a small share of every bet. It’s paid either as cash or as bonus funds, depending on the terms. Our guide to how wagering works in casino apps explains what happens if it’s paid as a bonus.
Is casino cashback paid in real money?
Sometimes, but not always. Some cashback is paid straight into your cash balance and can be withdrawn, while some arrives as bonus funds with wagering attached. Since 19 January 2026, any such wagering can’t be more than 10 times the bonus. Check the terms before opting in. Our page on what no wagering means on a casino app covers the cash side.
Does cashback cover all your losses?
No, cashback only returns part of what you lose. With 10% cashback on a £50 net loss you get £5 back and are still £45 down, and the house edge applies to every bet you place. Treat cashback as a small discount on entertainment you’d have paid for anyway. Our house edge by game page shows what each game costs on average.
Is PlayOJO’s OJOplus a form of cashback?
It works like stake-based cashback. PlayOJO describes OJOplus as money back on every game played, so you receive a share of each stake whether the round wins or loses. It isn’t a refund of losses, and the rate and excluded games are in PlayOJO’s terms, so check them in the app. Our PlayOJO welcome bonus page covers the separate sign-up offer.
Can cashback have wagering requirements in the UK?
Yes, if it’s paid as bonus funds, but the wagering is capped. Under the Gambling Commission’s rewards and bonuses code, wagering can’t require you to play through bonus funds more than 10 times, a rule in force since 19 January 2026. Cash cashback has no wagering at all. Our wagering cap entry works through the maths in pounds.
Which casino apps offer cashback?
It changes as promotions change, so check each app’s promotions area. Among our partners, PlayOJO has OJOplus money back as a standing feature, while the Coral and Ladbrokes listings describe rewards such as Coral Coins and LadBucks rather than cashback. We found no published cashback for Casumo or 10bet. Our list of casino apps with cashback compares the options.
