Demo mode: meaning in casino apps

Demo mode is a play-for-free version of a casino game that uses virtual credits, so you can’t win or lose real money. In UK casino apps the Gambling Commission requires demos to follow the same rules as the real-money game, and you must be age-verified before you can open one.

Key takeaways

  • Demo mode uses virtual credits: no money staked, no money won.
  • UK demos must use the same game rules as the real-money version (RTS 6).
  • You must pass age verification before playing a demo in a licensed app.
  • A short demo session tells you how a game plays, not what it will cost you over time.

Demo mode meaning

Demo mode loads a casino game with a balance of pretend credits instead of your cash. You spin or deal exactly as you would with real stakes, but nothing comes out of your account and nothing you win can be withdrawn.

The Gambling Commission calls these play-for-free games. Studios and apps label the same thing demo, practice or fun mode. It’s different from a social casino, where you can buy coins, and from promotional free-to-play games that offer real prizes. You’ll find the neighbouring definitions in our A to Z of casino app terms.

How demo mode works under UK rules

A demo is only useful if it behaves like the real game, and UK rules insist on that. RTS 6 in the Commission’s technical standards sets out four expectations for licensed operators.

What RTS 6 expects from a play-for-free game
RequirementWhat it means for you
Same game rules as the real-money versionFeatures, paylines and bonus triggers work identically
Same RNG, or one that meets the RTS 7A standardResults come from a properly random source, not a friendlier one
Prize distribution reflects the real gameVirtual payouts match real payouts in proportion
Accurate likelihood of winningThe demo shouldn’t make wins look more frequent than they are

The aim, in the Commission’s words, is to stop customers being misled about their chances because of how a free version behaves. You can read the requirement in RTS 6 on play-for-free games (opens in a new tab), and our random number generator entry explains the RNG side.

Why UK apps verify your age before demo mode

Since 7 May 2019, online operators have had to verify a customer’s age and identity before they gamble, and the same applies to free-to-play versions of gambling games. That’s why a UK-licensed app usually asks you to register and pass checks before any demo opens, unlike some overseas sites.

The minimum details are your name, address and date of birth. Operators normally check these against databases such as credit reference agencies and the electoral roll, then ask for documents only if that fails. The Commission’s announcement of the rules (opens in a new tab) explains the reasoning, and our age verification entry covers the process in apps.

Demo mode vs real money vs other free games

How demo mode compares with other ways to play
TypeWhat you stakeWhat you can winAge-verified?
Demo modeVirtual creditsNothing of valueYes, in UK-licensed apps
Real-money playYour own moneyCash prizesYes
Promotional free-to-play gameNothingReal prizes set by the promotionYes, as part of your account
Social casino appCoins, often bought with real moneyMore coins, no cashDepends on the app

Promotional free-to-play games are the ones people most often confuse with demos. The Coral app’s store listing mentions free-to-play games with real-money prizes, and the Ladbrokes listing names Instant Spins and a daily prize wheel. Those are account promotions with their own terms, not practice versions of a game. Our list of casino apps with daily free games covers them.

What a demo can and can’t tell you

A demo is good for learning the controls, reading the paytable with the game in front of you, and seeing how a bonus round plays out on a small screen. It’s also a fair way to decide whether you even like a game before spending anything.

What it can’t do is show the long-run cost. Take 100 demo spins at a pretend 10p: that’s £10 of notional stakes. On a 96% RTP game the expected loss on £10 is 40p, yet a single bonus round can leave a demo balance well ahead. Treat a lucky demo run as noise, not a sign the real game will treat you the same way.

  • Useful for: rules, features, layout in portrait or landscape, how fast the 2.5-second spin feels.
  • Not useful for: predicting results, finding a ‘hot’ game, or testing betting systems.

Trying demo mode on your phone

Demo availability varies by app and by game, so treat these as general steps rather than a fixed menu path.

  1. Register with a UK-licensed app and complete the age and identity check.
  2. Open the game lobby and tap a game tile; look for a demo, practice or fun option before the real-money button.
  3. If no demo appears, the operator may not offer one for that game; the real-money version is the only option there.
  4. Open the game’s rules screen and note the RTP while the demo loads.
  5. Set a time limit before you start; demo sessions can run long because nothing feels at stake.
  6. When you switch to real money, set a deposit limit first; our deposit limits guide explains how.

Demo games on websites and in adverts

RTS 6 guidance also covers demos away from the operator’s own app. Demonstration games on other websites that are set up with higher-than-normal returns, for example to show off a bonus feature, must be clearly labelled as such. Advertising videos must make clear when footage has been edited or sped up.

So a clip of a bonus round firing again and again tells you little about the real game. Our guide to demo mode on casino apps goes further into where demos come from, and the free-to-play game rules page sets out the regulation in full.

Frequently asked questions

What is demo mode on a casino app?

Demo mode is a version of a casino game that uses virtual credits instead of money. You play the same game with the same rules, but you can’t lose your own cash or win anything you can withdraw. UK rules call these play-for-free games and require them to behave like the real-money versions. Our answer to what demo mode is on a casino app covers availability in more detail.

Why do I need to verify my age to play a demo?

Because UK rules have required age verification before free-to-play versions of gambling games since 7 May 2019. The aim is to stop under-18s practising gambling games, even without money involved. Licensed apps therefore ask for your name, address and date of birth and run checks before any demo opens. Our guide to casino app age verification explains what happens if the automatic check fails.

Are demo games rigged to win more often?

They shouldn’t be in a UK-licensed app. RTS 6 requires play-for-free games to use the same game rules as the real-money version, a properly random number generator and a prize distribution that reflects the real game. Demos on other websites set up with higher-than-normal returns must be clearly labelled. A good demo run is just short-term luck. See our page on whether casino apps rig games.

Can I win real money in demo mode?

No, demo mode has no cash prizes and nothing you win can be withdrawn. Some apps run separate free-to-play promotions, such as prize wheels or instant spins, that can award real prizes, but those are account promotions with their own terms rather than demos. If you’re after those, compare our list of casino apps with daily free games and read the promotion rules.

Can I play slots for free on a UK casino app?

Sometimes: it depends on the operator and the game. Some apps offer demo versions of many slots after you’ve verified your account, while others offer real-money play only. Where there’s no demo, reading the paytable and rules is the next best way to learn a game without staking. Our answer to can I play slots for free on a casino app lists what to look for.

Is demo mode a good way to test a betting strategy?

No, because no betting system changes a game’s house edge, and a demo’s short sessions can make any pattern look like it works. Strategies such as doubling after a loss just change the size and timing of losses, and they hit stake limits fast. Use demos to learn rules and features instead. Our guide to house edge by game shows the real cost of each game.
