Casino app vs mobile site
Casino app vs mobile site is mostly a question of convenience and control, not odds. With a UK-licensed operator you use the same account, the same games and the same rules either way. The real differences are storage, which phones are supported, what the app collects, how notifications reach you and how easily you can block it.
Key takeaways
- Your account, balance, game maths and UK rules are identical in a casino app and on the mobile site.
- Apps take space and need a recent system: Coral and Ladbrokes need iOS 18 and about 101 MB on iPhone; PlayOJO needs iOS 15 and 25.4 MB.
- Store listings add checks a website doesn’t have: Apple and Google require a licence, geo-restriction and an 18+ rating for real-money apps.
- App timers and install blocks work best on apps; Gamban, GAMSTOP and bank blocks cover the browser too.
- Offers are the same on app and site: Coral 100 spins for £10 on slots, Ladbrokes up to 500 spins, PlayOJO 80 spins. 18+, terms apply.
- Coral iPhone app
- 101.6 MB, iOS 18.0 or later
- Ladbrokes iPhone app
- 101.2 MB, iOS 18.0 or later
- PlayOJO iPhone app
- 25.4 MB, iOS 15.0 or later
- Mobile site
- No install; any up-to-date browser
- Odds and RTP
- Same game maths on app and site
Casino app vs mobile site: the short answer
Use the app if you play regularly with one casino, your phone meets its system requirement and you’re happy to give up the storage. Use the mobile site if your phone is older, short of space, shared with someone else, or if you only play now and then and would rather not have a casino icon on your home screen.
Nothing about the money side changes. A licensed operator runs one account across its app and website, so your balance, limits, bonuses and withdrawal options follow you. The games run the same maths, and the Gambling Commission’s rules apply to every screen.
| Area | Casino app | Mobile site |
|---|---|---|
| Account and balance | Same account | Same account |
| Game RTP and house edge | Same game version rules apply | Same game version rules apply |
| Install and storage | 25–102 MB for our partners on iPhone | Nothing to install |
| Phone requirement | Minimum iOS version; Android version shown on device | A current browser |
| Store vetting | Apple or Google checks licence and rating | None; you check the licence yourself |
| Privacy disclosure | Store privacy label or data safety section | Privacy and cookie policy |
| Push notifications | Possible, if you allow them | Usually none |
| App timers and install blocks | Work directly | Need website blocking instead |

What stays identical: account, games, odds and UK rules
A common myth says casino apps pay out less than websites. There’s no rule or published figure behind that. Some games exist in more than one RTP version, so the honest advice is the same on any screen: open the game’s help or information panel and read the RTP shown there.
The UK game design rules are written for the game, not the device. Slots must take at least 2.5 seconds per spin with no autoplay, turbo or slam-stop, and other casino games at least 5 seconds per round. You can’t play several games at once, and your net spend and time played must be shown as you play. Our game speed rules page has the dates.
What an hour costs at the fastest legal pace
Because the speed limits are the same in an app and a browser, so is the most you can stake in an hour. The expected loss is the total staked multiplied by the house edge. These figures use the fastest pace the rules allow, so real sessions will usually be slower and cheaper.
| Game and stake | Most rounds per hour | Total staked | House edge | Expected loss per hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Slot at 10p (96.71% RTP) | 1,440 | £144 | 3.29% | £4.74 |
| Slot at £1 (96.71% RTP) | 1,440 | £1,440 | 3.29% | £47.38 |
| Single-zero roulette at £1 | 720 | £720 | 2.70% | £19.44 |
The 96.71% figure is the developer’s published RTP for Big Bass Bonanza; the 2.70% edge is standard single-zero roulette maths. Results in any single hour swing widely, but the house edge means losses are likely over time on the app and the site alike.
What the app store checks that a casino website doesn’t
This is the most underrated difference between a casino app and a mobile site. Anyone can publish a website, but a real-money casino app has to get through Apple’s or Google’s review first.
Apple’s App Store Review Guidelines (opens in a new tab) say real-money gaming apps must have the necessary licences where they’re used, must be geo-restricted to those places and must be free to download. Apps in highly regulated fields such as gambling should be submitted by the legal entity providing the service, not an individual developer.
Google Play’s real-money gambling policy (opens in a new tab) asks developers to complete an application, hold a valid licence for each country, block under-18s and users outside the licensed area, and stay free of Google Play billing.
| Check | App Store | Google Play | Mobile site |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gambling licence required | Yes (5.3.4) | Yes, per country | Only the regulator checks |
| Geo-restriction | Required | Required | Up to the operator |
| Age rating | 18+ | Adults only (PEGI 18 in the UK) | No rating |
| Publisher identity | Legal entity, not an individual | Licensee named on the application | Check the footer and register |
| Paid download or in-app purchase | Not allowed | Not allowed | Not applicable |
On the mobile site, you do that checking yourself. The Gambling Commission register lists the web domains each licence holder uses, such as the domains registered to LC International Limited (opens in a new tab) for Coral and Ladbrokes and the domains registered to Skill On Net (opens in a new tab) for PlayOJO. Our guide to spotting an unlicensed casino app covers the warning signs for sites as well.
Storage and phone requirements: the cost of installing a casino app
An app is a download that stays on your phone and needs updating. The mobile site needs nothing but a browser, which is why it’s often the only option on an older handset.
| App | Size | Requires | Also runs on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coral Casino: Slots & Games | 101.6 MB | iOS 18.0 or later | iPad, Apple silicon Mac, Apple Vision |
| Ladbrokes Casino Games & Slots | 101.2 MB | iOS 18.0 or later | iPad, Apple silicon Mac, Apple Vision |
| PlayOJO Real Money Casino | 25.4 MB | iOS 15.0 or later | iPad, iPod touch, Apple silicon Mac, Apple Vision |
The iOS requirement matters more than the size. An iPhone that can’t move beyond iOS 17 can’t install the current Coral or Ladbrokes app, but it can still open both casinos in Safari. PlayOJO’s app reaches back to iOS 15 and is about a quarter of the size of the other two.
Google Play listings no longer show a minimum Android version on the web page; your phone tells you when you open the listing whether the app is compatible. If space is tight, read our guides to casino app storage space and casino apps on older phones, or see the casino sites that work without an app.
Privacy: an app’s store label against a site’s cookie policy
An app comes with a privacy summary on its store listing, which makes it easy to compare before you install. A mobile site has no equivalent label: you rely on its privacy notice and the cookie choices you make in the banner.
| App | Used to track you | Linked to you | Location |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coral | User content, usage data | Contact, financial, identifiers, search history, user content, usage data | Coarse location, linked to you |
| Ladbrokes | No tracking category shown | Financial, contact, user content, search history, identifiers, usage data | Precise location, not linked to you |
| PlayOJO | Identifiers | None listed | Listing says it may use location even when not open |
PlayOJO’s App Store listing also warns that background location use can reduce battery life. In a browser, a site has to ask for location through the browser’s own prompt, and you can refuse it. Our guides to reading a casino app privacy label and whether casino apps track your location go through each category.
Coral’s Google Play data safety section is reported to say no data is collected or shared, which doesn’t match its iPhone label. Check the label on your own phone before you install.
Logging in and paying: casino app vs browser
Apps can offer device sign-in. Apple says Face ID data never leaves your iPhone and apps are only told whether the check succeeded. None of the Coral, Ladbrokes or PlayOJO store listings mentions Face ID or Touch ID, so look in each app’s settings for a biometric login option. In a browser you will usually type a password or let your password manager fill it.
Payments run through the same cashier whichever route you use. Coral and Ladbrokes list Visa, Mastercard and Maestro debit cards, PayPal, Pay by Bank, Apple Pay, Google Pay and paysafecard, with no withdrawal fees and a £2,000 per-deposit cap. PlayOJO’s help page names debit cards, Payz, Apple Pay and Trustly and says you can withdraw as little as you want.
| Detail | Coral | Ladbrokes | PlayOJO |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lowest published deposit | £5 (Google Pay, Pay by Bank) | £5 (Google Pay, Pay by Bank) | £10 first deposit for the offer |
| Withdrawal fees | None | None | Not published |
| Payout speed | Instantly to 5 banking days after approval | Instantly to 5 banking days after approval | Most payments processed within a few hours |
| Excluded from the welcome offer | Neteller, PayPal, Paysafe, Skrill, prepaid and certain debit cards | Prepaid, PayPal, Paysafe, Neteller, Skrill, Moneybookers | Check the offer terms |
Use whichever is easier for you to keep secure. The Coral Casino app, Ladbrokes Casino app and PlayOJO app reviews have the full payment detail.
Notifications and marketing: who can reach you, and how
An installed app can send push notifications if you allow them, which a mobile site generally can’t. That cuts both ways: a payout alert is useful, a promotion that arrives when you’d decided not to play is not.
UK rules let you choose which products (betting, casino, bingo) and which channels (email, SMS, phone) an operator uses for direct marketing, with options set to off by default since 1 May 2025. The Commission decided against a separate push-notification option, so push alerts are best controlled in your phone’s own settings. Our guide on marketing consent rules explains your choices.
- Open your phone’s Settings app.
- Find Notifications, then scroll to the casino app.
- Turn off Allow Notifications, or keep only the types you want.
- Inside the casino account, open the marketing or contact preferences and switch off any channel you don’t want.
- If you use the mobile site, check your browser’s site settings in case you granted notification permission.
There’s more on this in how to turn off casino app notifications.
Blocking and limits: easier on a casino app or a mobile site?
Account tools are identical on both: a deposit limit, time-out or self-exclusion set in the app applies on the website too, and every UK operator must prompt you to set a financial limit before your first deposit. The difference is in phone-level controls.
| Tool | Covers the app | Covers the mobile site |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone Screen Time (block app installs) | Yes | Only with separate website limits |
| Android Digital Wellbeing app timer | Yes | Only if your phone offers website timers; check its settings |
| Gamban | Yes | Yes |
| GAMSTOP | Yes (account level) | Yes (account level) |
| Bank gambling block | Yes (payments) | Yes (payments) |
| Account deposit limit or time-out | Yes | Yes |
Apple’s Screen Time restrictions (opens in a new tab) can stop new apps being installed, and Android’s Digital Wellbeing app timers (opens in a new tab) close an app and dim its icon when the time runs out. A mobile site sidesteps both, which is why Gamban and a bank gambling block are the stronger choices if you play in a browser.
How to move between a casino app and its mobile site
Because the account is shared, switching is just a matter of signing in somewhere else. Do it in this order so nothing gets lost.
- Finish or close any game round in progress before you leave the app or site.
- Note your balance and any active bonus or free spins.
- Open the other route: install the app from the official store listing, or type the casino’s address into your browser.
- Sign in with the same username or email and password.
- Check that your balance, limits and bonus progress match what you noted.
- If you’ve moved to the site for good, delete the app from your phone to free the space.
Casino app or mobile site: which suits which player
| Your situation | Better choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone stuck below iOS 18 | Mobile site, or PlayOJO’s app | Coral and Ladbrokes apps need iOS 18 |
| Phone nearly full | Mobile site | Nothing to download or update |
| Shared phone or tablet | Mobile site, signed out after use | No casino icon or saved login |
| Regular player with one casino | App | Quicker to open; device sign-in where offered |
| Want firm phone-level limits | App plus Screen Time or Digital Wellbeing | Timers and install blocks work on apps |
| Want to block yourself completely | Either, with Gamban and GAMSTOP | Covers both routes |

Welcome offers that work on the app and the mobile site
None of these offers is app-only: you can claim each from the app or the browser. They are all slot offers, so blackjack, roulette and live tables don’t count. Coral and Ladbrokes are both run by LC International Limited, so you may not be able to open new accounts at both.

Frequently asked questions
Is a casino app better than the mobile site?
Not in terms of odds or rules, which are the same on both. An app is quicker to reach, can offer device sign-in and works with app timers, but it takes storage and needs a recent system: the Coral and Ladbrokes iPhone apps need iOS 18. The mobile site needs nothing installed and works on older phones. Our Coral app vs website page shows the trade-off for one brand.
Do casino apps have worse RTP than casino websites?
There’s no rule that makes apps pay less. With a licensed operator you load the same games from the same account, and the UK’s design rules apply to the game wherever it runs. Some games exist in more than one RTP version, so check the help screen inside the game to see the figure for the version you’re playing. Our guide to finding a game’s RTP shows where to look.
Can I use the same account on the app and the mobile site?
Yes. Coral, Ladbrokes and PlayOJO each run one account across their app and website, so your balance, limits and bonus progress are the same wherever you sign in. Close any game round before switching so nothing is left unsettled. If a limit you set doesn’t appear on the other route, contact support. The PlayOJO app vs website page covers this for PlayOJO.
Can I claim a welcome bonus on the mobile site instead of the app?
Yes, the partner offers on this page aren’t limited to the app. What matters is that you’re a new customer, meet the deposit and stake conditions and use a payment method that qualifies. PlayOJO’s offer is only available through its designated offer link. All are slot offers: 18+ and terms apply. Read how to claim a bonus in a casino app for the steps.
Is a casino mobile site as safe as the app?
A licensed operator’s site is as safe as its app, but the app has had an extra check: Apple and Google require a gambling licence, geo-restriction and an adults-only rating before listing it. On the web you should confirm the address yourself, for example against the Gambling Commission register’s domain list. Our are casino apps safe guide lists what to check.
Which uses more data, a casino app or the mobile site?
There’s no published figure comparing them for these casinos. An app downloads its core files once, 25.4 MB to 101.6 MB for our partners on iPhone, plus updates, while a site loads more of its pages as you browse. Games and especially live streams account for most data either way. Our casino app data usage guide explains how to keep an eye on it.
Can I block a casino mobile site the way I block an app?
Partly. Screen Time install blocks and Android app timers are built around apps, so a mobile site can slip past them unless you also set up website restrictions. Gamban blocks gambling sites and apps on all your devices, GAMSTOP blocks your accounts with every GB-licensed operator, and a bank block stops the payments. Our Gamban page explains how it works alongside GAMSTOP.
Why can’t I install a casino app on my older iPhone?
The App Store listing sets a minimum iOS version, and your phone must meet it. Coral and Ladbrokes need iOS 18.0 or later; PlayOJO needs iOS 15.0 or later. If your iPhone can’t update that far, the casino’s mobile site in Safari is the way to play. Our casino apps on older phones guide covers other options.
