Older phone? Keep, update or switch casino apps

Casino apps on older phones work as long as the phone can run the app's minimum software. On iPhone that's the deciding factor: PlayOJO and Casumo need iOS 15.0, 10bet needs iOS 16.0, and Coral and Ladbrokes need iOS 18.0. If yours can't update that far, the casino's mobile website is the safe fallback. Here's how to decide.

Key takeaways

  • Your phone's highest supported iOS version decides which store apps you can install: iOS 15 covers PlayOJO and Casumo, iOS 16 adds 10bet, and iOS 18 adds Coral and Ladbrokes.
  • Google Play listings don't show a minimum Android version publicly; the store checks compatibility on your device.
  • A phone that no longer gets security updates is a bigger risk to your account than a slow app.
  • Never sideload an APK to get round an incompatibility; use the casino's mobile website instead.

Will casino apps work on your older phone?

The question isn't really how old your phone is but which software it can run. Each App Store listing sets a minimum iOS version, and the App Store won't install the current version of an app on a phone below it. Once you know the highest iOS your iPhone supports, the answer is a simple lookup.

Figures come from each app's UK App Store listing; the PlayOJO listing (opens in a new tab) shows its iOS 15.0 requirement, for example. Older iPhones also tend to be fuller, so pair this table with our guide to casino app storage space. The devices hub page for older phones lists requirements for more UK casino brands, and the casino app guides hub covers everything else.

How to find which software your phone runs

On an iPhone

  1. Open Settings and tap General.
  2. Tap About and look at iOS Version.
  3. Go back and tap Software Update to see whether a newer version is offered for your phone.
  4. If an update is offered, back up, charge the phone and install it before trying the casino app again.

On an Android phone

  1. Open Settings and tap About phone (on Samsung phones, then Software information).
  2. Note the Android version.
  3. Check for updates in Settings, usually under System or Software update.
  4. Open the casino's Google Play listing on that phone to see whether it's compatible.

Our guide to which iOS version casino apps need explains the requirements in more depth.

Older Android phones and casino apps on Google Play

Android is less clear-cut. None of our five partners' Google Play listings shows a minimum Android version to the public, because Play now checks compatibility on the device itself. The practical test is to open the listing on your phone: if you can install it, your phone is supported; if Play says it isn't compatible, it isn't.

That message tempts some people to look for an APK file instead. Don't. Since Android 8.0, installing from outside Play needs a per-app permission you grant to the browser or file manager, as the Android Developers Blog explained (opens in a new tab), and very old phones may predate even that safeguard. Google Play Protect (opens in a new tab) scans for harmful apps from other sources, but an APK that runs on an unsupported phone may also be outdated or fake. Read is it safe to download a casino APK? and our Android phones page.

Why security updates matter more than the casino app itself

A casino account holds your money, your ID documents and your bank details. A phone that no longer gets security fixes is more exposed to known weaknesses, whatever app you run on it. The NCSC's advice (opens in a new tab) is to install app and device updates as soon as they're available and turn on automatic updates.

Unique casino password?Limits damage if another site leaksSee choosing a strong casino password
Two-step verification on?Blocks logins with a stolen passwordSee two-factor authentication for casino accounts
Apps only from official stores?Avoids fake and tampered appsNo APKs; check the developer name

Biometric login is a plus on older iPhones that support it. Of our partners, only Casumo's App Store listing says its app supports Face ID and Touch ID. See keeping your casino account secure.

Speed, battery and live streams on an older handset

Even when an app installs, an older phone can feel the strain. Live dealer games stream video continuously, which is heavier on the processor, battery and data than a slot. Ageing batteries also hold less charge, so sessions drain them faster.

  • Close other apps before opening live casino and use Wi-Fi where you can. See playing live casino on mobile data.
  • If the stream lags, a lower-quality setting in the game (where offered) or a stronger connection helps more than restarting the app.
  • Watch your battery: see casino apps and battery life.
  • Keep phone storage free, as near-full phones slow down and fail to update.

One thing an old phone can't change is game speed. UK rules set a minimum of 2.5 seconds per slot spin and 5 seconds per round for other casino games, and ban autoplay, so a newer phone doesn't let anyone play faster. See game speed rules.

Using the casino's mobile site when the app won't install

If your iPhone is stuck below iOS 18, you can't install the current Coral or Ladbrokes app, but you can still open their websites in Safari. The account is the same one you'd use in the app, with the same balance, limits and UK protections. Save the site as an icon with our guide to adding a casino web app to your home screen.

Check that the browser itself is still updated, since a very old browser may struggle with modern casino sites. Our comparison of casino app vs mobile site sets out the differences.

The App Store sometimes offers to install the last version of an app that worked on an older iOS. Whether a casino still accepts logins from an older app version isn't published, so if you try it and run into problems, use the website or ask the operator's support.

Passing an old phone on: clearing casino apps first

Older phones often end up with a partner, parent or child. Before you hand one over, remove every trace of your gambling accounts. It protects your money and stops anyone, especially under-18s, finding a logged-in casino app.

  1. Open each casino app, log out, and remove any saved cards from the phone's wallet if they were only for that device.
  2. Turn off biometric login in each app if you'd switched it on.
  3. Delete each casino app and any home screen shortcuts.
  4. Sign out of your Apple ID or Google account so purchases and backups stay with you.
  5. Erase the phone fully: on iPhone, Erase All Content and Settings under General; on Android, a factory reset under System or General management.
  6. If the phone is going to a child, set it up with parental controls before handing it over.

Apple's parental controls guide (opens in a new tab) shows how to restrict App Store installs and limit content by age rating; real-money casino apps are rated 18+. Our page on young people and gambling apps covers the rest.

Do older phones change RTP or game fairness?

No. The outcome of each spin or hand is decided by the game's random number generator, and the RTP is set by the game version, not by your handset. Apps don't carry lower RTP by default either; open the game's help screen to confirm the figure for the version you're playing.

What an older phone can do is make play less comfortable: smaller screens make roulette tables fiddly, and lag on a live stream can make you miss a betting window. If that happens, the round simply goes ahead without your bet. The house edge still applies, so expected costs are the same on any phone: at £1 a spin on a 96% RTP slot, the long-run cost is about 4p a spin. See is RTP lower on casino apps?

Frequently asked questions

Do casino apps work on older iPhones?

Many do, as long as the iPhone runs the app's minimum iOS version. Of our partners, PlayOJO and Casumo need iOS 15.0, 10bet needs iOS 16.0, and Coral and Ladbrokes need iOS 18.0. Check Settings, General, About to see your version. If your phone can't reach the minimum, use the casino's mobile website. See do casino apps work on older iPhones?

Which casino apps work on iOS 15?

Of our five partners, PlayOJO (25.4 MB) and Casumo (52.5 MB) both list iOS 15.0 or later on the UK App Store, so they install on an iPhone running iOS 15. 10bet needs iOS 16.0, and Coral and Ladbrokes need iOS 18.0. For those three, the mobile website is the alternative. Our PlayOJO app review and Casumo app review have the full details.

What Android version do casino apps need?

It isn't published on the listings. Google Play no longer shows a minimum Android version to the public for these apps; it checks compatibility on your phone. Open the casino's listing on your own device: if Install is available, it's supported. If Play says the device isn't compatible, use the casino's mobile website rather than an APK. See install a casino app on Android.

Is it safe to use a casino app on a phone that no longer gets updates?

It's riskier than using a supported phone. A device without security updates is more exposed to known weaknesses, and your casino account holds money and personal documents. If you must use it, set a strong screen lock, use a unique password and two-step verification, and install only from official stores. Better still, use a newer device. Read are casino apps safe?

Can I download an older version of a casino app for my phone?

Sometimes the App Store offers the last compatible version of an app to an older iPhone. Whether the casino still lets that version log in isn't published, and it may lack recent fixes. Never look for old versions on third-party download sites. If the older app doesn't work, use the casino's mobile website. Our guide to fake casino apps and scams explains the risks of unofficial downloads.

Does an older phone affect my chances of winning?

No. Results are decided by the game's random number generator and its RTP, not by your phone's age or speed. An older phone may lag or crash, which is frustrating, but it doesn't change the odds, and the house edge means losses are likely over time on any device. See do casino apps rig games? for how fairness is tested.

Why does live casino lag on my old phone?

Live casino streams video continuously, which works the processor, battery and connection harder than slots do. Older phones and weak signals struggle most. Close other apps, switch to good Wi-Fi and lower the stream quality if the game offers it. If you lag and miss a betting window, the round goes ahead without your bet. See does live casino work on 4G?

What should I do with casino apps before giving my old phone away?

Log out of each casino app, switch off biometric login, delete the apps and shortcuts, sign out of your Apple or Google account, and then erase the phone completely. If a child will use it, set up parental controls first, as real-money casino apps are rated 18+. Read sharing a phone and casino apps for more on keeping accounts private.
