Are casino apps safe?
Are casino apps safe? A UK-licensed casino app downloaded from the official App Store or Google Play is generally safe in the technical and legal sense: the operator is regulated, the store has vetted it, and your rights are protected. What no app can make safe is the money you gamble, because the house edge means losses are likely over time.
Key takeaways
- Safety starts with the licence: check the operator on the Gambling Commission’s public register.
- Apple and Google both require real-money casino apps to be licensed, age-gated and geo-restricted.
- Privacy labels differ a lot between apps, so read them before you install.
- Your balance may not be fully protected if an operator fails; the app must tell you its protection level.
- Licensed apps must offer deposit limits, time-outs and reality checks, and must take part in GAMSTOP.
- Regulator
- Gambling Commission (Great Britain)
- ID checks
- Before any deposit or play
- Credit cards
- Banned for gambling since 14 April 2020
- Withdrawal reversal
- Not allowed under UK rules
- Fund protection levels

Are casino apps safe? Five separate questions
Whether casino apps are safe depends on what worries you, because ‘safe’ covers several things. It helps to split the question in five, because a casino app can pass one test and fail another.
| Question | What protects you | Where to check |
|---|---|---|
| Is the operator legitimate? | A Gambling Commission licence | The public register |
| Is the app itself genuine? | App Store and Google Play vetting | The seller or developer on the listing |
| Is my data handled well? | Privacy law and store disclosure rules | The privacy label or Data safety section |
| Is my money safe? | Licence conditions on payments and funds | The terms and the fund protection statement |
| Is the gambling itself safe for me? | Limits, time-outs, GAMSTOP | Account settings and the safer gambling page |
The rest of this guide takes each question in turn, with steps you can follow on your phone. For a shorter answer about downloads alone, see are casino apps safe to download.
Is the casino app licensed? Check it in five steps
Any business offering remote gambling to people in Britain needs a Gambling Commission licence. An unlicensed casino app offers none of the protections in this guide, so this is the check that matters most.
- Find the operator’s company name and account number, usually in the app’s footer, terms or ‘about’ section.
- Open the Gambling Commission’s public register (opens in a new tab).
- Search by business name, trading name, domain or account number.
- Confirm the status is Active and that remote casino is among the licensed activities.
- Check the trading names or domains list includes the brand you’re using, and look at any regulatory actions.
For our partners, Coral and Ladbrokes are both run by LC International Limited (account 54743), PlayOJO by Skill On Net Limited (39326), Casumo by Recro Limited (61549) and 10bet by Blue Star Planet Limited (43173). Our explainer on how casino apps are licensed in the UK covers what the licence requires.
How Apple and Google screen casino apps
Part of the reason casino apps are safe to download from official stores is that both stores treat gambling as a high-risk category. Apple’s guidelines describe gambling as one of the most regulated offerings on the App Store and warn developers to expect extra review time. Real-money apps must be licensed where they’re used, geo-restricted to those places, and free to download. Apple also says gambling apps should be submitted by a legal entity that provides the service, not an individual developer.
Google Play adds a formal application. The operator must submit its licence details, licence number and app package name for each market, and the app must have an Adults Only rating, an 18+ notice and a responsible gambling statement. That’s why a genuine casino app listing names a company you can trace to the licence.
The catch is that store vetting only protects you if you use the store. Casino APK files and links sent by message skip those checks. Read fake casino apps and scams and Apple App Store rules for casino apps for more.
How safe are casino apps with your personal data?
Casino apps hold more sensitive data than most: your name, address, date of birth, ID documents and payment details. Both stores make developers disclose what they collect, and the partner apps’ iPhone labels show how much that varies.
| App | Data used to track you | Location on label |
|---|---|---|
| Coral | User Content, Usage Data | Coarse location, linked to you |
| Ladbrokes | None shown | Precise location, not linked to you |
| PlayOJO | Identifiers | Listing says it may use location when not open |
| Casumo | Identifiers, Usage Data, Diagnostics | Not shown on the iOS label |
| 10bet | Usage Data | Not shown on the iOS label |
Labels are written by the developer, so treat them as a summary, not an audit. Location data is part of the picture for a reason: Apple and Google both require gambling apps to block use from places their licence doesn’t cover. Our guides to reading a casino app privacy label and whether casino apps track your location go deeper.
Keeping your casino app account secure
Even when casino apps are safe in themselves, much of the risk sits with your own account. The National Cyber Security Centre advises applying app and device updates as soon as they’re available and turning on automatic updates. It also says 2-step verification (opens in a new tab) makes it harder for criminals to get into your accounts even if they know your password, with authenticator apps the main alternative to text codes.
Biometric login is another layer. Apple says Face ID data is encrypted, never leaves your device and is never available to apps; the app only learns whether the check succeeded. Apple puts the chance of a random match with Face ID at less than 1 in 1,000,000 with a single enrolled appearance. Among our partners, Casumo’s listing mentions Face ID and Touch ID login.
- Use a unique password you don’t use anywhere else.
- Turn on two-factor authentication if the casino offers it.
- Keep iOS or Android and the casino app up to date.
- Avoid logging in on public Wi-Fi without a trusted connection.
- Never share your login, even with family.
Our guide to keeping your casino account secure has the full checklist.
Is your money safe in a casino app?
Several UK rules protect the money side. Credit cards can’t be used to gamble in Great Britain, including through e-wallets funded by a credit card, which stops borrowing to gamble on card. The Commission’s responsible product design standard (opens in a new tab) also says you must not be able to cancel a withdrawal once requested, which removes the temptation to reverse it and keep playing.
Your balance is a different matter. Licensed operators must tell you how well customer funds are protected if the business fails, using three levels: not protected, medium protection or high protection. You must acknowledge this before your first deposit is used, and since 31 October 2025, operators with unprotected funds must remind you every six months. The Commission’s guide on what happens to your money if a gambling business goes bust (opens in a new tab) explains each level.
Are casino app games fair?
For many people, ‘are casino apps safe?’ really means ‘are the games straight?’. Licensed games must meet the Gambling Commission’s technical standards for generating random outcomes, and the Commission keeps a list of approved test houses that check games and systems. A fair game, though, isn’t one you’re expected to win: every game has a built-in house edge, so the expected result over time is a loss.
Here’s what that means in pounds. A slot with a 96% RTP has a 4% house edge, so at £1 a spin over 300 spins (£300 staked) the expected loss is £300 × 4% = £12. Real sessions swing above and below that figure, but no pattern, timing or system changes the maths.
Apps don’t use lower-RTP versions of games by default, but some games come in more than one RTP setting, so check the game’s help or information screen for the figure that applies. Our guide on finding a game’s RTP in an app shows where to look, and do casino apps rig games answers the common worry.
Warning signs of an unsafe casino app
Asking ‘are casino apps safe?’ matters most with an app you found through an ad or a message. Unlicensed and offshore casinos target UK players through ads, social media and messaging apps. They give you no UKGC protection: no duty to verify age, no GAMSTOP, no fund disclosure and no route to independent dispute resolution.
- The app is only available as a file download or through a link in a message.
- There’s no UK licence number, or it doesn’t match the register.
- You’re told you can play without ID checks, or deposit by credit card.
- It promises a way to win or advertises ‘no limits’.
- It says it doesn’t take part in GAMSTOP.
- Customer support can only be reached through a chat app or social media.
Any one of these is enough to walk away. See how to spot an unlicensed casino app for more detail.
Staying safe with gambling itself
The biggest question about whether casino apps are safe for you isn’t technical. UK rules make licensed apps give you tools, and using them early works better than waiting for a problem.
| Tool | What it does | Since |
|---|---|---|
| Deposit limit prompt | Asks you to set a financial limit before the first deposit | 31 October 2025 |
| Reality checks | Shows elapsed time at a frequency you choose | Long-standing rule |
| Net spend and time display | Shows what you’ve spent and how long you’ve played, live | 17 January 2025 |
| Time-out | Pauses your account for a short period | Long-standing rule |
| GAMSTOP | Blocks all GB-licensed online gambling for 6 months, 1 year or 5 years | Required of online operators since March 2020 |
Operators must also watch for signs of harm, such as rising spend or time, and act on them. If gambling stops feeling like entertainment, the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133 is free and open 24/7. See our safer gambling tools in casino apps guide and the help and support page.
What to do if something goes wrong
Start with the operator’s own complaints process. The business has 8 weeks to resolve your complaint; if it can’t, it must offer to refer you to an independent alternative dispute resolution (ADR) service, which is free. The Gambling Commission itself doesn’t resolve individual complaints.
Keep screenshots of your transaction history and any messages. Our guides to complaining about a casino app and what ADR means for players explain each step.
Licensed casino apps with a welcome offer
If you’ve decided a casino app is right for you, these partners are licensed by the Gambling Commission and listed on both official app stores. Their offers are slot offers with terms, and 18+ applies. Bonuses don’t change the house edge, so set your limit first.

Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to use casino apps in the UK?
Yes, casino apps from Gambling Commission-licensed operators, downloaded from the App Store or Google Play, are generally safe to use. The licence means age checks, fair games, safer gambling tools and a complaints route. The money you stake is still at risk, since the house edge favours the casino over time. Check any operator on the public register before signing up, and see are casino apps legal in the UK.
Is it safer to use a casino app or the website?
Neither is safer by default, because the same licence, account and rules apply to both. An app from an official store has the advantage of store vetting and can support biometric login, while a website avoids storing another app on your phone. The key safety step is the same either way: check the licence. Compare the two in casino app vs mobile site.
Can a casino app steal my bank details?
A licensed casino app from an official store is very unlikely to, because the operator is regulated and must keep your data secure. The real risk comes from fake apps and APK files that imitate real brands. Download only from the App Store or Google Play, check the developer name, and use a payment method such as Apple Pay or Google Pay where available. See fake casino apps and scams.
Do casino apps rig the games?
No, licensed casino games must meet Gambling Commission standards for random outcomes and are checked by approved test houses. That doesn’t mean you’re likely to win: every game has a house edge, so losses are the expected result over time. RTP isn’t lower in apps by default, but some games exist in more than one version. Check the game’s help screen. Read is RTP lower on casino apps.
What happens to my balance if a casino app goes bust?
It depends on the operator’s fund protection level, which it must tell you before your first deposit is used. Funds rated ‘not protected’ count as company assets if the business fails; ‘high protection’ means a separate account controlled by an independent trustee. Since 31 October 2025, unprotected operators must remind you every six months. Read more in customer funds protection.
Why does a casino app want my location?
Because Apple and Google require real-money gambling apps to block use from places the operator isn’t licensed for, and location is one way to check. Neither store says which method must be used, so it can also be based on your connection. Privacy labels show whether location is collected and linked to you. Our page on why a casino app needs your location explains more.
Is it safe to download a casino APK?
It’s riskier than using an official store, because sideloading skips Google Play’s safety check before download, and fake casino APKs are a common scam. Google Play Protect still scans for harmful apps installed from other sources. UK-licensed casino apps are available on Google Play, so there’s rarely a good reason to use an APK. See is it safe to download a casino APK.
Can I block casino apps if I feel I’m gambling too much?
Yes, and there are several layers. GAMSTOP blocks all GB-licensed online gambling for 6 months, 1 year or 5 years. Many banks let you block gambling payments on your card, and Gamban is a paid app that blocks gambling sites and apps on your devices. You can also take a time-out inside the app. Start with our GAMSTOP guide or call 0808 8020 133.
Is a free social casino app safe?
Free-to-play social casino apps don’t take real-money stakes, but they can still sell virtual coins through in-app purchases. They pay nothing out, and spending can add up. Real-money apps can’t use App Store or Play in-app billing at all. Know which kind you’ve downloaded before you spend. See social casino apps vs real money apps.
