Do casino apps track your location?

Do casino apps track your location? They check it, because Apple and Google both require real-money gambling apps to block use outside the areas their licence covers. Whether that means GPS, your IP address or both isn't published by the operators, and how much location data an app keeps varies a lot from one app to the next.

Key takeaways

  • Store rules require real-money casino apps to be geo-restricted, so some form of location check is expected.
  • Neither Apple nor Google says the check must use GPS; an IP-based check would also meet the wording.
  • Partner listings differ: Coral declares coarse location linked to you, Ladbrokes precise location not linked, and PlayOJO says its app may use location even when closed.
  • Set location to 'while using the app' and approximate where your phone allows; restore it if the app can't confirm where you are.

Do casino apps track your location? The quick answer

A UK casino app checks where you are, but 'checking' and 'tracking' aren't quite the same. A check confirms you are in a place the operator may serve. Tracking, in Apple's sense, means following your activity across other companies' apps and websites. A casino app can do the first without the second.

The reason for the check is licensing. The Gambling Commission licenses operators to serve customers in Great Britain, and both app stores insist that real-money apps stay inside licensed areas. Our wider guides section explains the licensing chain, and how casino apps are licensed in the UK goes step by step.

Why UK casino apps need your location: the store rules

Apple's App Store Review Guidelines (opens in a new tab), rule 5.3.4, say real-money gaming apps 'must have necessary licensing and permissions in the locations where the app is used, must be geo-restricted to those locations, and must be free on the App Store'.

Google Play's real-money gambling policy (opens in a new tab) asks for a valid licence in each country or region where the app is distributed, and says the app must prevent access from areas the licence doesn't cover. Google's country list includes the United Kingdom for online casino, sports betting and lotteries.

For a deeper look at each store's rulebook, see Apple App Store rules for casino apps and Google Play rules for casino apps.

GPS or IP address: how casino apps check your location

This is the part most articles get wrong by guessing. Neither Apple nor Google specifies that geo-restriction has to use GPS. A check based on your IP address, the network address your connection comes from, would also fit the wording.

None of the operator help pages that could be checked for our partners explains the exact method. What the store listings do reveal is whether an app declares location data at all, and how precise it is. That is the honest limit of what anyone outside the operator can tell you.

  • Precise location usually means GPS-level accuracy from your phone.
  • Coarse or approximate location is an area rather than a spot, which is enough to tell one country from another.
  • IP-based checks don't need any phone permission, which is why an app can still detect a foreign network with location switched off.

Phones usually let you grant approximate rather than precise access, which is often enough for a country-level check.

What each partner app declares about location

The privacy labels and Data safety sections are the best public evidence. Here is what each listing said about location when checked in October 2026.

Location data declared by partner casino apps
AppiPhone (App Store)Android (Google Play)
CoralCoarse location, linked to you, for product personalisationListing shown as declaring no data collected (check live)
LadbrokesPrecise location, not linked to you, for product personalisationPersonal info and app activity; location not listed
PlayOJO'May use your location even when it is not open'States no data collected or shared
CasumoLocation not listed on the labelMay share location
10betLocation not listed on the labelMay collect location

So the honest answer to 'does the Coral app track my location' is that its iOS label says it collects coarse location and links it to your identity. Ladbrokes collects precise location but says it isn't linked to you. PlayOJO's iPhone listing carries Apple's standard background-location wording, which is the strongest statement of the five. The walkthrough on reading a casino app privacy label explains 'linked' and 'not linked'.

How to limit what a casino app knows about your location

You can keep the geo-check working while cutting out background access and fine-grained accuracy. These steps work on current versions of iOS and Android; labels may differ slightly by phone maker.

iPhone

  1. Open Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Location Services.
  2. Find the casino app in the list and tap it.
  3. Choose 'While Using the App' rather than 'Always'.
  4. Turn off Precise Location if you want the app to see only an approximate area.
  5. Open the casino app and check it still lets you in; if it doesn't, turn Precise Location back on.

Android

  1. Open Settings, then Location, then App location permissions (or go to Apps, pick the casino app and tap Permissions).
  2. Select the casino app and choose 'Allow only while using the app'.
  3. Switch off 'Use precise location' if your phone shows that option.
  4. Reopen the app to confirm it still works.

What happens if you refuse location access

Operators don't publish exactly how each app reacts, so we won't invent a screen. In general, if an app can't confirm that you are somewhere it is licensed, expect it to stop you placing bets until it can. Your account and balance aren't affected, because they live on the operator's systems.

If an app says you are in the wrong place when you aren't, the usual culprits are location switched off, a VPN or work network routing your traffic abroad, or a weak signal. Our answer to why a casino app says you are in the wrong location and the broader casino app not working troubleshooter help here.

Casino app location checks abroad, in Northern Ireland and with VPNs

The Gambling Act 2005 and the Commission's rules cover Great Britain. Northern Ireland sits outside that regime, and some offers exclude it: PlayOJO's welcome offer, for one, isn't open to new customers there. See can I play casino apps in Northern Ireland.

Abroad, an operator's licence for that country decides what you can do, and a British app may block play. Don't use a VPN to make a phone appear to be in Britain: it works against the geo-restriction the stores require and is likely to breach the operator's terms. Our guides on using a casino app abroad and casino apps and VPNs set out the rules.

Your location data and your privacy rights

Location is personal data, so UK data protection law applies to how operators handle it. Every partner app's Android listing says you can ask for data to be deleted, though an operator may have to keep some records to meet gambling and anti-money-laundering rules.

If you think an operator has mishandled your data and it hasn't resolved your complaint, you can go to the Information Commissioner's Office complaints service (opens in a new tab). For everything else that gets collected, see how casino apps use your data, which covers the rest.

Background location and your battery

Background location has a cost beyond privacy. PlayOJO's own App Store listing warns that the app 'may use your location even when it is not open, which can decrease device battery life'. Setting location to 'while using' removes that background use. We look at other drains in casino apps and battery life.

UK casino apps with a welcome offer, and how location affects them

Location matters for offers too: every UK offer is for players in the operator's licensed area, and PlayOJO's excludes Northern Ireland. The three apps below are standalone casino apps from the UK stores. 18+, and terms apply to each.

Frequently asked questions

Can casino apps see my location?

Yes, if you grant the location permission, and some apps can also infer your country from your IP address without it. Apple and Google require real-money apps to be geo-restricted to licensed areas. What each app collects differs: Coral's iOS label lists coarse location linked to you, Ladbrokes lists precise location not linked to you, and PlayOJO's iOS listing says it may use location even when closed. Our answer to can casino apps see my location adds more detail.

Why does a casino app need my location?

It needs to confirm you are somewhere the operator is licensed to serve. Apple's guideline 5.3.4 requires real-money gaming apps to be geo-restricted, and Google Play requires them to stop access from areas outside the licence. In Britain the licence comes from the Gambling Commission. Neither store says the method has to be GPS. For more, read why a casino app needs my location and our geolocation glossary entry.

Do casino apps use GPS?

It isn't published, so nobody outside the operator can say for certain. Neither Apple's nor Google's rules require GPS for geo-restriction, and an IP-based check would also satisfy them. The store listings show which apps declare precise location (Ladbrokes on iOS) and which declare coarse location (Coral on iOS). If you want to limit accuracy, turn off precise location in your phone's settings and check the app still works. See casino app permissions explained.

Can I play on a casino app with location turned off?

Possibly, but don't count on it. Operators don't publish how each app behaves without the permission. If an app can't confirm that you are in a permitted area, expect it to stop you placing bets until it can. Your balance and account are safe either way. If you get a location error at home, our troubleshooter for a casino app that isn't working lists the usual causes, such as VPNs and weak signal.

Do casino apps track you when they are closed?

Only if you have allowed background location, and most people don't need to. PlayOJO's App Store listing states that the app 'may use your location even when it is not open, which can decrease device battery life'. Setting the permission to 'while using the app' on iPhone or 'allow only while using the app' on Android stops background access. The other partner listings carry no such warning. Our PlayOJO app review covers the app more widely.

Can I use a VPN with a UK casino app?

You shouldn't use a VPN to change where a casino app thinks you are. App store rules require real-money apps to be geo-restricted, and disguising your location works against that; it is also likely to break the operator's terms. A VPN can also make a British app think you are abroad and block you. If you use one for work, switch it off before opening the app. The risks are set out in casino apps and VPNs.

Can I use my UK casino app on holiday?

Often not for real-money play, because location checks are tied to the licence area. A British licence covers Great Britain, and an operator needs a local licence to serve you elsewhere. You can usually still log in to check your balance or contact support, but play may be blocked; check the operator's terms. Don't use a VPN to get round it. Read using a casino app abroad before you travel.

Is my location data shared with other companies?

It depends on the app, and the store labels are the place to check. On iPhone, look for location under 'Data used to track you' or 'Data linked to you'. On Android, the Data safety section says whether data is shared: Casumo's says it may share location, and 10bet's says it may collect it. All partner Android listings say you can request deletion. Our guide to casino app cookies and tracking explains sharing and tracking.

Why does my casino app say I'm in the wrong country?

Usually because something is routing your connection elsewhere or the location permission is off. Common causes are a VPN, a work or school network, a roaming SIM, or location switched to 'never'. Turn off any VPN, restore location to 'while using', switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, then reopen the app. If it still fails, contact the operator's support. Our answer on being shown the wrong location goes further.
