Is it safe to download a casino APK?

Is it safe to download a casino APK? Usually not, and for UK players there's rarely a reason to. Licensed casino apps are listed on Google Play in Great Britain, so a casino offering its Android app only as a downloadable file is often one that couldn't, or wouldn't, meet Google's licence checks. Here's how to weigh the risk.

Key takeaways

  • A casino APK skips every check Google Play applies to gambling apps, including the licence requirement.
  • The biggest danger is often the operator, not the file: an unlicensed casino gives you no UK protection.
  • UK-licensed apps such as Coral, Ladbrokes and PlayOJO are on Google Play, so you don't need an APK for them.
  • If you've already installed one, uninstall it, run a Play Protect scan and revoke the install permission.
  • Check any casino against the Gambling Commission public register before you deposit.

Is it safe to download a casino APK? The short answer

For most UK players, downloading a casino APK is an unnecessary risk. The file itself might be clean, but you lose the checks that stand between you and a fake app, and you can't easily tell who built it.

There are two separate questions hiding inside the search. Is the file safe for your phone? And is the casino behind it safe for your money? A file can pass a malware scan and still connect you to an operator with no UK licence. A licensed operator's own file is lower risk, but still has no advantage over its Google Play app.

If you only want the practical rule: when a casino has a Google Play listing in the UK, use it. When it doesn't, ask why before you go any further. Our explainer on casino APK files covers the format itself; this page is about the risks.

Casino APK risk levels by where the file comes from

Not every APK carries the same risk. The source tells you most of what you need to know.

The safest row is also the easiest one. All five of our partner casinos publish Android apps on Google Play for UK users, so there's no trade-off to make for those brands.

What can go wrong with a sideloaded casino app

The risks fall into four groups. None of them is certain, but each is more likely outside the store.

A copy that isn't what it claims

Anyone can package an app with a familiar name and icon. A modified copy could capture your login details or card information as you type them, or send you to a payment page that isn't the casino's. Our page on fake casino apps and scams shows how lookalikes are built.

Permissions you didn't need to give

A rogue app can request access to SMS messages, contacts or other apps' notifications. On a phone that also receives bank codes by text, that's a serious exposure. The explainer on casino app permissions lists which ones a genuine casino app might reasonably ask for.

An operator outside UK regulation

Google Play only lists real-money gambling apps when the developer holds a valid licence for each country it serves. Casinos that sell themselves through APK links are often the ones that can't show a UK licence. That means no Gambling Commission rules on fair games, ID checks, safer-gambling tools, complaints or GAMSTOP.

An app that never gets fixed

Sideloaded apps generally don't update through Google Play. The National Cyber Security Centre's advice is to install app and device updates as soon as they're available (opens in a new tab), which is hard to follow when you have to fetch every new version by hand.

What you give up when the casino isn't UK-licensed

This is the part people underestimate. With a casino licensed by the Gambling Commission, a whole set of rules sits behind your account, and they apply on the app just as on the website.

Protections you keep with a UK-licensed casino app
ProtectionWhat the UK rules say
Age and identity checksMust be completed before you can deposit or gamble; demo games need age checks too
Self-exclusionLicensed online operators take part in GAMSTOP (6 months, 1 year or 5 years)
Bonus termsWagering capped at 10x the bonus since 19 January 2026
Slot stakes£5 per spin for ages 25 and over, £2 for ages 18 to 24
Game designNo autoplay, no turbo or slam stops, at least 2.5 seconds per slot spin
PaymentsNo credit card gambling since 14 April 2020
ComplaintsAccess to an approved dispute resolution (ADR) service

An offshore operator that reaches you through an APK link doesn't have to follow any of this. If something goes wrong with a withdrawal, a UK regulator can't step in for you. For the framework, read how casino apps are licensed in the UK and the remote gambling licences page.

Warning signs on a casino APK download page

Download pages that push APKs tend to share the same tells. Any one of them is a reason to close the tab.

  • The page tells you to switch off Google Play Protect or ignore Android's warning.
  • The casino has no UK Google Play listing, or the listing you find is under a different developer name.
  • There's no Gambling Commission account number, or the number doesn't match the register.
  • You're offered an "APK-only" bonus, a countdown, or a deal that sounds bigger than any licensed casino advertises.
  • The link arrived through a direct message, a text from an unknown number or a social media comment.
  • The site accepts credit cards or crypto for gambling, which UK-licensed operators can't do with credit cards.
  • It promises the app works from anywhere or with a VPN, which a licensed app's location rules don't allow.

How to check a casino before downloading anything

Five minutes of checking saves a lot of trouble. Do this before you install an app from any source, store or file.

  1. Find the operator's company name and Gambling Commission account number, usually in the website footer or terms.
  2. Search for it on the Gambling Commission public register of businesses (opens in a new tab) and confirm the licence is active and covers remote casino.
  3. Check that the website domain or brand is listed against that licence.
  4. Search Google Play for the exact app name and compare the developer name with the licence holder.
  5. If the brand has a Play listing, install from there and ignore any APK link.
  6. If there's no listing and no UK licence, don't download or deposit.

For our partners, the licence holders are LC International Limited for Coral and Ladbrokes (account 54743) and Skill On Net Limited for PlayOJO (account 39326). The Coral app safety review, Ladbrokes app safety page and PlayOJO safety page put those details alongside the app listings.

Already installed a casino APK? What to do now

Don't panic: many sideloaded apps are harmless. But if you're unsure where yours came from, tidy up in this order.

  1. Stop using the app and don't enter any more card or bank details in it.
  2. If you hold a balance with a licensed operator, request a withdrawal through its website instead of the app.
  3. Uninstall the app from your phone's settings.
  4. Open Google Play Protect and run a scan, then follow any instruction to remove harmful apps.
  5. Turn off the install-unknown-apps permission for the browser or file app you used.
  6. Change your casino password, and the password of any account that shares it; switch on two-step verification where offered.
  7. If you entered card details into an app you now doubt, contact your bank.

Since Android 8.0, the permission to install outside the store is held by individual apps rather than one global switch, and Google's Android developers blog notes (opens in a new tab) that you can revoke it at any time. Our guides on keeping your casino account secure and two-factor authentication for casino accounts cover the follow-up steps.

If Google Play Protect warns about a casino app

Google says Play Protect (opens in a new tab) checks your device for potentially harmful apps from other sources and can warn about, deactivate or remove them. A warning on a casino APK is a clear signal to stop, not an obstacle to click past.

A clean result is less informative. Play Protect looks for harmful behaviour in the code; it doesn't check whether a casino holds a UK licence or treats players fairly. So a quiet scan plus an unlicensed operator is still a bad combination. The different warnings are explained in Google Play Protect and casino apps.

Safer ways to play on Android without an APK

You have two safer routes. The first is the Google Play app from a licensed operator, which Google only allows after a licence check, an under-18 block and geo-restriction to the licensed area, per its real-money gambling policy (opens in a new tab). The second is the operator's mobile website in your browser, which needs no install at all.

Our list of the best casino apps for Android covers the store apps, and the page on why some casino apps are not on Google Play explains what it means when a brand is missing.

If gambling apps are becoming a problem

Sometimes people look for APKs because they've self-excluded or blocked gambling apps and want a way round it. If that's you, it's worth pausing. The National Gambling Helpline, run by GamCare, is free and open 24/7 on 0808 8020 133.

GAMSTOP registration (opens in a new tab) blocks you from all online gambling companies licensed in Great Britain for 6 months, 1 year or 5 years. Device blockers and bank blocks add further layers; see blocking gambling apps on Android and our safer gambling hub.

Frequently asked questions

Can a casino APK give my phone a virus?

It can, which is the main reason to avoid casino APKs from unknown sources. A file from a download site or a messaging link could be altered to steal logins, read texts or show fake payment pages. Google Play Protect scans apps from other sources and can warn about or remove harmful ones, but it isn't a guarantee of safety. Installing from Google Play removes most of the doubt. Our page on fake casino apps and scams explains the common tricks.

Is a casino APK from the operator's own website safe?

It's much lower risk than a file from a mirror site, provided the operator is UK-licensed and you're on its genuine domain. Even so, there's no real advantage to it when the same app is on Google Play, because the store version can update automatically and comes with Google's own checks. Check the operator's licence on the Gambling Commission register first. Our casino APK files explainer describes how the two install routes differ.

Why would a casino only offer an APK?

Usually because its app isn't on Google Play in your country. Google requires real-money gambling developers to complete an application and hold a valid licence for every country they serve, so a casino without a UK licence can't list a UK app. Old download pages from before Google allowed UK gambling apps also linger. Either way, an APK-only casino deserves a licence check first. Our guide to why some casino apps are not on Google Play goes through every reason.

How do I know if a casino app is licensed in the UK?

Look up the operator on the Gambling Commission's public register of businesses and confirm it holds an active remote casino licence. The company name and account number are usually in the casino's website footer or terms. For example, Coral and Ladbrokes both trade under LC International Limited, account 54743. Then check that the developer on the Google Play listing matches. Our answer to how to know a casino app is licensed gives a fuller walkthrough.

Can I get my money back from a casino I downloaded as an APK?

If the operator is UK-licensed, you have the usual routes: its complaints process, then an approved dispute resolution service. If it isn't licensed in Great Britain, the Gambling Commission can't help you get money back, and you may have few options beyond contacting your bank. That's the strongest reason to confirm the licence before depositing. Our guide on how to complain about a casino app explains the UK process.

Does GAMSTOP block casino apps installed from an APK?

GAMSTOP blocks you from online gambling companies licensed in Great Britain, whichever app or website you use to reach them. It can't stop an unlicensed operator from accepting you, and that's a big part of why APK-only casinos can be risky for people who have self-excluded. Adding a device blocker and a bank gambling block closes more gaps. See does GAMSTOP block casino apps and our page on bank gambling blocks.

Should I turn off Play Protect to install a casino app?

No. Turning off Play Protect removes one of the few checks a sideloaded app receives, and a download page that asks you to do it is a red flag. Licensed UK casino apps don't need Play Protect disabled because they're available on Google Play. If Play Protect blocks or warns about a casino APK, the sensible response is to delete the file. Our Google Play Protect and casino apps guide explains what each warning means.

Is it safer to use a casino's mobile website than an APK?

Yes, for most people a licensed casino's mobile website is safer than an APK from an unknown source, because there's nothing to install and no app permissions to grant. You still get the same account, games and UK safer-gambling tools. The main thing you may miss is app conveniences like biometric login. Our comparison of casino apps and mobile sites sets out the differences.
