Your first deposit in a casino app

Your first deposit in a casino app happens only after the operator has checked your age and identity and asked you to set a spending limit. Then you pick a payment method in the app’s own cashier, not through the App Store or Google Play. This guide covers the order of events, minimums, which methods count for welcome offers and what to check afterwards.

Key takeaways

  • UK apps must verify your age and identity before you can deposit or play.
  • Since 31 October 2025 you are prompted to set a financial limit before your first deposit.
  • Payment goes through the operator’s cashier: Apple and Google don’t allow in-app purchase for real-money gambling.
  • PayPal, Skrill, Neteller and prepaid cards are excluded from several welcome offers, so check before you pay.
  • Credit cards, and e-wallets loaded by credit card, can’t be used to gamble in Great Britain.

What happens before your first deposit in a casino app

A first deposit in a casino app is the last step of sign-up, not the first. UK law puts three checks in front of it: the operator verifies who you are, asks you to set a spending limit and tells you how your money is protected. Only then does the cashier open.

That order surprises people who expect to pay straight away, as they would in a shop app. It exists because the Gambling Commission wants checks done before money changes hands, not after a win. If you’re new to the whole process, our casino app guides hub covers each stage from download onwards.

ID checks and the deposit limit prompt

Under licence condition 17.1.1 (opens in a new tab), an operator must verify your name, address and date of birth before you’re allowed to gamble. It should also tell you, before you deposit, which documents it might ask for later and how to send them. Most checks run against credit reference and electoral roll data in the background, so many people never upload anything.

If the automatic check can’t match you, the app will ask for a passport, driving licence or a household bill. PlayOJO, for example, says documents go through its upload tool rather than email and that it aims to verify within 12 hours. Our guide on how casino apps verify your identity explains what happens behind the scenes.

The financial limit prompt

Since 31 October 2025, operators must prompt you to set a financial limit before your first deposit. Setting a limit is the default choice, and if you want to skip it you have to confirm that. The amount box must be free text with no suggested figure filled in for you, and any later decrease takes effect straight away.

The Commission’s announcement on the new deposit limit rules (opens in a new tab) sets out the detail. A sensible first limit is the amount you’d be comfortable losing in a month, because that’s what a deposit limit really caps. See setting deposit limits in a casino app for daily, weekly and monthly options.

How to make your first casino app deposit, step by step

The screens differ between apps, but the sequence below fits every UK-licensed app we cover. Where a step depends on the app, look for the matching option in your account or cashier rather than expecting an identical button.

  1. Install the app from the App Store or Google Play, checking that the publisher name matches the operator.
  2. Register with your real name, home address and date of birth, exactly as they appear on your ID.
  3. Choose your marketing preferences; every product and channel starts switched off.
  4. Set a deposit limit when prompted, using a figure you’ve decided in advance.
  5. Read and acknowledge the notice about how your funds are protected.
  6. Decide whether you want the welcome offer, and check its excluded payment methods before choosing one.
  7. Open the cashier, pick a debit card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or Pay by Bank, and enter the amount.
  8. Confirm with your bank app, Face ID, fingerprint or card security code, then check the balance has updated.

Which payment methods work for a first deposit

Debit cards are accepted everywhere, and most apps now add Apple Pay, Google Pay or a bank-to-bank option. The partner apps publish slightly different lists, so the table below uses only what each operator’s help pages state.

Coral and Ladbrokes, both run by LC International Limited, also apply a UK limit of three active payment methods in a rolling 30 days. PlayOJO allows up to two cards that haven’t been verified yet at one time. For the full Coral picture, the Coral app payments page lists every method, and Ladbrokes app payment methods does the same for its sister brand.

Minimum and maximum first deposit amounts

Not every operator publishes one minimum deposit. Coral and Ladbrokes say the general minimum is shown in the cashier, and they publish £5 only for Google Pay and Pay by Bank. Their deposit methods help page (opens in a new tab) also caps a single UK deposit at £2,000.

A low minimum is useful for trying an app, but the welcome offer may need more. If £5 is your ceiling, our £5 deposit casino apps list and the minimum deposits explainer show which options fit.

First deposit bonus: which payment methods count

This is where most first-deposit mistakes happen. Several welcome offers ignore deposits made with e-wallets or prepaid cards, and the app won’t always warn you before you pay. Once the deposit is made with an excluded method, the offer is usually gone for good.

Payment methods excluded from three welcome offers (checked 5 October 2026)
OfferExcluded methodsWhat qualifies
Coral: bet £10 on slots, get 100 free spinsNeteller, PayPal, Paysafe, Skrill, prepaid cards, certain debit cardsDeposit with another method, then bet £10+ on slots
Ladbrokes: play £10 on slots, get up to 500 free spinsPrepaid cards, PayPal, Paysafe, Neteller, Skrill, MoneybookersDeposit and spend £10+ on slots
PlayOJO: 80 free spins, no wageringNot listed in the key terms; the offer needs the designated offer linkFirst deposit of at least £10

Coral’s note about certain debit cards is worth taking seriously: if you aren’t sure your card qualifies, ask live chat before paying. Our page on payment methods excluded from bonuses explains why operators exclude e-wallets, and how to claim a bonus in a casino app covers opt-ins.

Welcome offers are for new customers aged 18 and over, and terms apply. Spin offers are for selected slots only; table and live games don’t count towards them.

Apple Pay and Google Pay for a first deposit on iPhone or Android

Phone wallets are the quickest way to make a first deposit on mobile, and they keep your card number away from the casino. Apple says Apple Pay doesn’t store your original card number and uses a device account number instead, confirmed with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode. Google Pay uses a randomly generated virtual number and needs a screen lock to work.

These payments still go through the casino’s own cashier. Apple’s App Review Guidelines (5.3.3) say apps may not use in-app purchase to buy credit for real-money gaming, and Google Play bars its billing system for gambling apps too. That’s why you’ll never see a casino deposit on your App Store receipt. Step-by-step help is in our guides to depositing with Apple Pay and depositing with Google Pay.

Why a credit card won’t work for your first deposit

Gambling with a credit card has been banned in Great Britain since 14 April 2020. The ban also covers e-wallets that you’ve topped up with a credit card, so loading PayPal from a credit card doesn’t get round it. The Commission’s page on gambling using a credit card (opens in a new tab) explains the rule.

If you add a credit card to Apple Pay and try to use it, expect a decline. Use a debit card or bank payment instead. The credit card ban explained page has the full background.

What your first deposit buys in playing time

A deposit is the price of some entertainment, not an investment. The house edge means you should expect to lose part of it over time, and a simple sum shows how fast. Expected loss equals total stake multiplied by the house edge.

Take a slot with a 96% RTP (a 4% edge; check the game’s help screen for the real figure) at 10p a spin. UK rules make each spin take at least 2.5 seconds, so the most you can play is 1,440 spins an hour. That’s £144 staked and about £5.76 expected loss an hour. At £1 a spin, the same hour means £1,440 staked and about £57.60 expected loss, which would use up a £20 first deposit quickly on average.

Results swing a lot around those averages, in both directions. Our budgeting guide for casino apps helps you turn these numbers into a monthly limit.

After the first deposit: balances, checks and withdrawals

Your deposit should show in your cash balance within seconds for cards and wallets. PlayOJO notes that some methods can take up to three working days to be credited, so a bank-based method may be slower. If a bonus is active, the app must show your cash balance and bonus balance separately.

  • You can withdraw your own deposit balance at any time, even with a bonus running; wagering only applies to bonus funds.
  • Withdrawals normally go back to the method you deposited with, so choose one you’re happy to be paid to.
  • Once your net deposits pass £150 in 30 days, the operator must run a light-touch financial vulnerability check.
  • Your spending limit applies from day one; you can lower it instantly, but increases wait 24 hours at PlayOJO, for example.

First deposit declined in a casino app? Common causes

Declines on a first deposit usually have a simple cause. Work through these before contacting support:

  • Verification isn’t finished, so the cashier is locked.
  • You’ve used a credit card, or a wallet funded by one.
  • Your bank has a gambling block switched on (Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds, Monzo, Starling and others offer one).
  • The amount is below the method’s minimum or above the £2,000 cap at Coral and Ladbrokes.
  • You’ve hit a method limit, such as three active payment methods in 30 days.

If you set up a bank gambling block yourself, it’s doing its job; think carefully before turning it off. Other causes are covered in our casino app payment declined guide.

Each of these welcome offers is triggered by a first deposit and £10 of slot play or a £10 first deposit, and each excludes some payment methods. 18+, terms apply.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to verify my ID before my first deposit in a casino app?

Yes. UK-licensed operators must verify your name, address and date of birth before you can deposit or gamble, and that includes using a bonus. Most checks happen automatically using credit reference and electoral roll data, so you may not notice them. If the check can’t confirm you, the app asks for documents such as a passport or driving licence. Our guide to what documents casino apps ask for lists the usual ones.

What is the minimum first deposit on a casino app?

It depends on the app and the payment method. Coral and Ladbrokes publish £5 for Google Pay and Pay by Bank and show other minimums in the cashier, while Casumo states £10 for every method. Welcome offers often need more than the minimum, such as £10 at PlayOJO or £20 at Casumo. See can I deposit £5 on a casino app for low-stakes options.

Can I use PayPal for my first deposit and still get the welcome bonus?

Usually not at Coral or Ladbrokes. Both list PayPal among the payment methods that don’t qualify for their welcome spins, alongside Skrill, Neteller, Paysafe and prepaid cards. You can still deposit with PayPal; you just won’t trigger the offer. If the bonus matters, use a qualifying debit card or another accepted method. The PayPal casino apps page covers where PayPal is accepted.

Why does the app ask me to set a deposit limit before I can pay?

Because it’s now a Gambling Commission rule. Since 31 October 2025 operators must prompt you to set a financial limit before your first deposit, with setting a limit as the default choice. You can opt out, but you have to confirm it. There’s no pre-filled amount, and lowering a limit later takes effect immediately. Our page on deposit limits in casino apps explains the options.

Can I make my first casino deposit with a credit card?

No. Credit cards have been banned for gambling in Great Britain since 14 April 2020, and the ban includes e-wallets that are loaded with a credit card. If you add a credit card to Apple Pay, the casino payment should be declined. Use a debit card, Apple Pay or Google Pay linked to a debit card, or a bank payment instead. Read more on the gambling credit card ban.

Does my first deposit go through Apple or Google?

No, the money goes through the casino’s own cashier. Apple’s guidelines bar in-app purchase for real-money gaming credit, and Google Play bars its own billing for gambling apps. You might pay with Apple Pay or Google Pay as a wallet, but the payment is to the operator, not to the App Store or Play Store. Our Apple Pay casino apps page explains how wallets work here.

Can I withdraw my first deposit if I change my mind?

Yes, you can withdraw your cash balance at any time, even if you’ve opted into a bonus. Commission guidance says operators must not make you meet wagering requirements before withdrawing your own deposit; only bonus funds can carry wagering. Withdrawing may cancel the bonus itself, so check the terms. The money usually goes back to the method you paid with. See how to withdraw from a casino app.

How quickly does a first deposit show in my casino app balance?

Card and wallet deposits normally appear within moments of confirming the payment. Some methods are slower: PlayOJO says certain deposit methods can take up to three working days to be credited. If your balance hasn’t updated, check your bank app to see whether the payment left your account, then contact support with the time and amount. The casino app transaction history guide shows where to look.
