Is PlayOJO safe and legit? The short verdict
PlayOJO is a legitimate, UK-licensed casino. The company behind it, Skill On Net Limited, holds Gambling Commission account 39326, with a casino licence dating from 2014 and bingo added in February 2020. PlayOJO itself launched in February 2017. Being licensed means PlayOJO must follow the Commission's rules on age checks, fair terms, safer-gambling tools, customer funds and complaints.
Safe isn't the same as spotless. In 2023 the operator agreed a regulatory settlement for social responsibility and anti-money-laundering failures, which we cover below. And like any casino app, PlayOJO can't make the games profitable for players: the house edge means losses are the expected result over time. For everything else about the app, read our PlayOJO app review.
Advantages
- Licensed by the Gambling Commission (account 39326)
- Official apps published by the licence holder itself
- Casino-only brand: the app isn't a sportsbook wrapper
- Deposit, time and loss limits, OJO Safeguard and self-exclusion
- Android data safety section says no data is shared or collected
Drawbacks
- £305,150 regulatory settlement in May 2023
- iPhone privacy label lists identifiers used to track you
- iOS listing says the app may use location when not open
- No phone number on PlayOJO's help page
PlayOJO's UK licence and owner
The Gambling Commission's public register entry for Skill On Net Limited (opens in a new tab) is the authoritative source for PlayOJO's licence. It records the company's head office in Limassol, Cyprus. Skill On Net (often written SkillOnNet) is also licensed by the Malta Gaming Authority, but for British players the Commission's licence is the one that matters.

How to check the PlayOJO licence yourself
You don't need to take our word for any of this. The register can be searched by business name, trading name, domain or account number, and it takes a minute on your phone.
- Open the Gambling Commission's public register in your phone's browser.
- Search for account number 39326 or the name Skill On Net Limited.
- Check the licence status shows as active and that remote casino is among the licensed activities.
- Look at the domain names listed for the account to confirm the PlayOJO site you're using is covered.
- In the App Store or Google Play, check the app's developer is Skill On Net Ltd before you install.
- Inside the app or on the site, look for the licence details in the footer, which the Commission expects licensees to display.
The register's regulatory action count doesn't always include older settlements; Skill On Net's entry has shown none even though the 2023 action was announced. Read the Commission's news archive alongside it.
Our page on how to know a casino app is licensed gives the same check for any brand.
PlayOJO's regulatory history: the 2023 settlement
On 23 May 2023 the Gambling Commission announced that Skill On Net Limited faced £305,150 of regulatory action (opens in a new tab) for social responsibility and anti-money-laundering failures. The Commission's summary notes the company runs 50 websites and says the full £305,150 would go to socially responsible causes. It refers to a separate public statement for the detailed failings, which the summary doesn't list.
How should a player read this? Settlements of this kind are common across the UK industry; Commission action between 2024 and 2026 has included penalties of £1 million and more against several large operators. A settlement shows the regulator found failings and required them to be put right. It isn't a suspension, and the register continues to list Skill On Net under account 39326. It is a fair reason to use the safer-gambling tools rather than rely on the operator to spot problems for you.

Is the PlayOJO app download safe?
The safe download is the official one. On iPhone, that's PlayOJO Real Money Casino on the App Store (opens in a new tab), sold by Skill On Net Ltd, needing iOS 15.0 or later and taking 25.4 MB, with an 18+ age rating. On Android, it's PlayOJO: Online Casino Games on Google Play (opens in a new tab), from developer Skill On Net Ltd and rated PEGI 18.
Both stores add their own screening. Apple requires real-money gambling apps to be licensed where they're used, geo-restricted and free to download, and says gambling apps should come from the legal entity providing the service. Google requires a valid licence for each country and an application process. Avoid APK files from other websites: our guides to whether it's safe to download a casino APK and fake casino apps and scams explain why. Download steps are on the PlayOJO iPhone app and PlayOJO Android app pages.
PlayOJO app privacy label and data safety explained
The two stores describe PlayOJO's data handling differently, because they ask developers different questions. Here's what each listing says.
| Question | App Store (iOS) | Google Play (Android) |
|---|---|---|
| Data used to track you | Identifiers | Not stated in this form |
| Data not linked to you | Identifiers (device ID) | Not stated in this form |
| Data shared | Not stated in this form | No data shared |
| Data collected | See label above | No data collected |
| Encryption | Not stated | Encrypted in transit |
| Deletion | Not stated | You can request deletion |
On iPhone, 'used to track you' means the device identifier may be linked with data from other companies' apps or websites, often for advertising measurement. iOS lets you refuse tracking for each app; look for the tracking setting in your iPhone's privacy settings. Our guides to reading a casino app privacy label and casino app cookies and tracking explain the categories.
These labels are the developer's own declarations, so treat them as a guide rather than an audit. They also cover the app, not what you hand over when you register or verify your identity, which PlayOJO must hold to meet its licence duties.
Location access in the PlayOJO app
The iOS listing carries Apple's standard notice that the app may use your location even when it's not open, which can decrease battery life. Apple and Google both require real-money gambling apps to restrict access to places where they're licensed, though neither says this must be done with GPS rather than other signals. PlayOJO doesn't publish a help statement on how it uses location.
You stay in control: iOS and Android both let you choose when an app can use location. Our pages on whether casino apps track your location and why a casino app needs your location cover the trade-offs.
Keeping your PlayOJO account and money safe
- Use a unique password for PlayOJO, and keep your phone locked with a passcode or biometrics.
- Send ID only through PlayOJO's upload tool, never by email, as PlayOJO's help page advises.
- Prefer methods that hide your card number, such as Apple Pay or Trustly, both named by PlayOJO.
- Check the developer name on any update or reinstall.
- Read the customer funds rating in PlayOJO's terms: UK operators must say whether balances are not protected, or have medium or high protection.
More on each point is in our guides to keeping your casino account secure and PlayOJO app payment methods.
Player protection tools in the PlayOJO app
Safety also means protection from overspending. PlayOJO's help page lists deposit limits (decreases immediate, increases after 24 hours), time and loss limits, OJO Safeguard and self-exclusion, and the App Store listing names Safe Mate and Take A Break. As a licensed operator, PlayOJO must also take part in GAMSTOP, the free national self-exclusion scheme.
Our PlayOJO safer gambling tools page explains each in turn. If you're worried about your gambling, the National Gambling Helpline is free and open 24/7 on 0808 8020 133.
If something goes wrong: complaints and ADR
A licence gives you a complaints route. Start with PlayOJO's own complaints process through live chat or email. The operator has 8 weeks to resolve it; after that, it must offer referral to an independent alternative dispute resolution (ADR) provider, which is free for you. The Commission's guide on how to complain about a gambling business (opens in a new tab) sets out the steps, and our complaints and ADR page explains them.
The Commission itself doesn't resolve individual complaints, but it does want to hear about operators breaking the rules. Contact routes are on our PlayOJO app customer support page.

Frequently asked questions
Is PlayOJO legit in the UK?
Yes. PlayOJO is operated by Skill On Net Limited, which holds Gambling Commission account 39326 for remote casino and bingo. That means it must verify your age, offer safer-gambling tools, follow fair-terms rules and give you access to independent dispute resolution. You can confirm the licence on the Commission's public register. Our guide to how casino apps are licensed in the UK explains what the licence covers, and the PlayOJO app review covers the rest.
Who owns PlayOJO?
PlayOJO is run by Skill On Net Limited, often written SkillOnNet, which also publishes the official iOS and Android apps as Skill On Net Ltd. The Gambling Commission register lists its head office in Limassol, Cyprus, and it also holds a Malta Gaming Authority licence. PlayOJO launched in February 2017. For comparison with Entain's brands, see Coral vs PlayOJO and our glossary entry on what an operator is.
Has PlayOJO been fined by the Gambling Commission?
Its operator has faced regulatory action. On 23 May 2023 the Commission announced that Skill On Net Limited would pay £305,150 for social responsibility and anti-money-laundering failures, with the money going to socially responsible causes. The Commission's summary refers to a separate public statement for the detailed failings. The company remains licensed under account 39326. Our UK licensing guide and safest casino app page put this in context.
Is the PlayOJO app safe to download?
Yes, if you use the official listings. On iPhone the app is PlayOJO Real Money Casino, sold by Skill On Net Ltd, needing iOS 15.0 or later. On Android it's PlayOJO: Online Casino Games from Skill On Net Ltd, rated PEGI 18. Avoid APK files from other sites, which skip the store's checks. See the PlayOJO iPhone app page and are casino apps safe to download for more.
What does the PlayOJO privacy label say?
The App Store label lists identifiers as data used to track you, and identifiers (the device ID) as data not linked to you. Google Play's data safety section says no data is shared or collected, data is encrypted in transit and you can request deletion. These are the developer's own declarations, and they cover the app rather than the identity details you give at sign-up. Our guide to reading a casino app privacy label explains the terms, as does the privacy label entry.
Does the PlayOJO app track my location?
The iOS listing says the app may use your location even when it isn't open, which can reduce battery life. Gambling apps on both stores must restrict access to places where they're licensed, and location is one way to do that, though PlayOJO doesn't publish how it uses it. You can control location access in your phone's settings. Read can casino apps see my location and our geolocation glossary entry.
Is my money safe in a PlayOJO account?
UK operators must tell you how customer funds are protected, rated as not protected, medium or high protection, and you acknowledge this before your first deposit is used. PlayOJO's rating is stated in its terms, so check it there. Even with protection, keep only what you're comfortable with in your balance and withdraw winnings you want to keep. Our customer funds page explains the ratings, and PlayOJO app withdrawals covers payouts.
How do I complain about PlayOJO?
Start with PlayOJO's own complaints process through live chat after logging in or by email at support@playojo.com. The operator has 8 weeks to resolve your complaint; if it can't, it must offer referral to an independent ADR provider, which costs you nothing. The Gambling Commission doesn't settle individual disputes. Our guides to how to complain about a casino app and PlayOJO app customer support explain each step.
