Casino app age verification
Casino app age verification means a UK operator must confirm you're at least 18 before you can deposit, gamble or even try a free demo game. Since 7 May 2019 there's been no grace period. On top of that, Apple and Google rate these apps for adults only. Here's how each layer works and what it means for you.
Key takeaways
- You must be 18 or over, and the operator must confirm your age before you deposit or play, including demo games.
- The old 72-hour window for completing age checks ended on 7 May 2019.
- App stores add a second layer: all five partner apps are rated 18+ on iPhone and PEGI 18 on Android.
- Parents can use Screen Time or Google's tools to stop adult-rated apps being installed.

What casino app age verification means
Age verification is the operator's check that you're old enough to gamble. In Great Britain that age is 18, and the check has to be completed before you can put money in or place a bet. It isn't a box you tick to say you're an adult; the operator has to confirm it independently.
The Gambling Commission's age and identity rules (opens in a new tab) took effect on 7 May 2019. From that date, online operators had to complete age verification before allowing a customer to gamble. Before then, they had up to 72 hours to finish the check, which meant someone under 18 could, in theory, gamble in the meantime.
The rule applies the same way to an app and a website, because it's attached to the account, not the device. Our glossary entry on age verification gives the short definition, and the age verification rules page covers the regulation in more depth.
Two layers of age checks on casino apps
There are really two separate checks. One comes from the app store and controls who can install the app. The other comes from the operator and controls who can use the account. They do different jobs, and neither replaces the other.
| App store age rating | Operator age verification | |
|---|---|---|
| Who sets it | Apple and Google, from the developer's answers | The licensed operator, under Commission rules |
| What it controls | Whether the app can be installed on a restricted device | Whether you can deposit, gamble or play demos |
| How it checks | Uses the device's parental settings | Checks your details against data sources, then documents if needed |
| What it shows | 18+ on the App Store; PEGI 18 on Google Play | A request for details or documents in the app |
| Can it be skipped? | Not on a device with restrictions set | No; it must be completed before you gamble |
The operator check is what makes a UK casino app adult-only in law. The store rating is a practical barrier that families can use, explained further down.
How the App Store and Google Play rate casino apps
Apple's age rating definitions (opens in a new tab) treat betting with real money, or with in-game currency that can be exchanged for money, as 'Gambling', and that sits in the 18+ tier. Apple lists 4+, 9+, 13+, 16+ and 18+ as its current values for devices on iOS 26 and later.
Google Play's real-money gambling policy (opens in a new tab) says gambling apps must prevent under-age users from using them. Google's application form also asks for an 'Adults Only' rating, an 18+ notice and a responsible gambling statement in the app.
| Casino | App Store | Google Play |
|---|---|---|
| Coral Casino | 18+ | PEGI 18 |
| Ladbrokes Casino | 18+ | PEGI 18 |
| PlayOJO | 18+ | PEGI 18 |
| Casumo | 18+ | PEGI 18 |
| 10bet | 18+ | PEGI 18 |
Both stores also limit advertising. Google says gambling ads must not be shown to or target users known to be under 18. Our guides to Apple App Store rules and Google Play rules explain the wider requirements.
When the age check happens in a casino app
The check normally runs as part of signing up. You enter your name, address and date of birth, and the operator checks them before your account can be used for gambling. If the automatic check confirms you, you may not notice it at all.
- Download the official app from the App Store or Google Play and open it.
- Choose to register and enter your details exactly as they appear on your official records.
- Wait while the operator checks your details; this is usually done against databases such as credit reference agencies and the electoral roll.
- If the automatic check can't confirm you, upload the document the app asks for, such as a passport or driving licence.
- Once you're confirmed, you'll be prompted to set a deposit limit before your first deposit.
That last step is its own rule. Since 31 October 2025, operators must prompt you to set a financial limit before your first deposit. Our guides to signing up to the Coral app and signing up to the Ladbrokes app show how this fits into each brand's registration.
Age verification for free demo games in apps
Many people are surprised that a free demo needs an age check too. The Gambling Commission's 2019 rules extended age verification to free-to-play versions of gambling games, so you have to be verified before you can try them, even when no money changes hands.
The reasoning is simple: a demo of a real-money slot is still a gambling game, and it shouldn't be a way for children to practise. That's why casino apps rarely let you open a game in demo mode before you've signed in. See demo mode on casino apps and our page on free-to-play game rules for more.
Social casino apps that use coins you can't cash out are a different category. Apple calls this 'simulated gambling' and rates frequent simulated gambling 18+ as well. Our guide to social casino apps vs real money apps explains the difference.
Why UK casino apps must check your age first
Protecting children is one of the licensing objectives behind British gambling law, and an online account is easy to open from a phone. Checking age at the start, rather than within a few days, closes the gap where an under-18 could deposit and play before being found out.
The same thinking runs through advertising rules. The CAP Code says gambling ads must not have strong appeal to children or young people, and generally bars anyone who is, or seems to be, under 25 from playing a significant role in a gambling ad. Our page on gambling advertising rules covers these in detail.
How parents can stop children installing casino apps
The operator's age check stops a child gambling on a real account, but it doesn't stop them downloading the app or seeing its adverts. Device controls add a useful extra barrier.
- iPhone and iPad: Apple's guide to parental controls on iPhone and iPad (opens in a new tab) explains how to set content restrictions by age rating, and how to block app installs altogether, through Screen Time's Content & Privacy Restrictions.
- Android: Digital Wellbeing app timers close an app once its daily allowance is used up, and Focus mode pauses chosen apps and their notifications.
- Blocking software: Gamban blocks gambling sites and apps across devices; it's a paid service with a free trial.
Step-by-step guides are on our pages for blocking casino apps with Screen Time and young people and gambling apps. If you share a phone with a teenager, read sharing a phone and casino apps too.
What to do if the casino app can't confirm your age
An automatic check can fail for ordinary reasons: a recent house move, a name change, a typo in your date of birth, or simply not being on the electoral roll. It doesn't mean you've done anything wrong.
| Reason | What to do |
|---|---|
| Date of birth or name entered wrongly | Contact support to correct it; don't open a second account |
| Recently moved house | Provide proof of your new address when asked |
| Not on the electoral roll | Upload photo ID such as a passport or driving licence |
| Name differs from your ID | Send the document that shows the change, if asked |
Our guide to casino app verification failed covers fixes in more detail, and how long casino app verification takes sets expectations on timing.
Age verification vs identity verification
The two are linked but not identical. Age verification answers one question: is this person at least 18? Identity verification goes further, confirming that you are who you say you are, live where you say you live and aren't self-excluded.
In practice, the same sign-up check usually covers both. If you want to know what documents may be asked for, how source-of-funds questions work and what happens at withdrawal, read our guide to how casino apps verify your identity. For other practical how-tos, browse the casino app guides hub.

Frequently asked questions
What age do you have to be to use a casino app in the UK?
You must be 18 or over to gamble on a casino app in Great Britain. The operator has to confirm your age before you can deposit or play, and all five partner apps are rated 18+ on the App Store and PEGI 18 on Google Play. There's no lower age for demo games either. See what age do you have to be to use casino apps.
Do casino apps check your age before you deposit?
Yes. Since 7 May 2019, online operators in Great Britain must complete age verification before letting a customer gamble, and that includes depositing and using a free bet or bonus. Before that date they had up to 72 hours. Most checks happen automatically at sign-up. Our page on age verification rules for casino apps explains the regulation.
Do I need to verify my age to play free casino games in an app?
Yes, for free versions of real gambling games. The Commission's 2019 rules require age verification before you can access free-to-play versions of gambling games, so demo slots in a real-money app need a verified account. Social casino apps with coins you can't cash out are a separate category. See demo mode on casino apps.
How do casino apps verify your age?
Usually by checking the name, address and date of birth you enter against databases such as credit reference agencies and the electoral roll. If that can't confirm you, the app asks for a document, such as a passport or driving licence. The check normally runs during sign-up. Our guide on how casino apps verify your identity covers the process.
Is the 18+ App Store rating enough to prove my age?
No, the store rating and the operator's check are separate. The 18+ rating on the App Store, or PEGI 18 on Google Play, only controls whether the app can be installed on a device with restrictions set. The operator must still confirm your age itself before you can deposit or play, usually by checking your details against databases. See Apple App Store rules for casino apps for how ratings work.
Can a 17-year-old download a casino app?
They shouldn't be able to use one. Even if a 17-year-old installs the app, the operator must verify age before any deposit, bet or demo game, and an under-18 will fail that check. Apple and Google rate these apps for adults, so device restrictions can block the download too. Parents can find steps on young people and gambling apps.
How can I stop my child downloading gambling apps on iPhone?
Use Screen Time's Content & Privacy Restrictions. Apple's parental controls let you limit apps by age rating or block installing apps entirely, and casino apps are rated 18+. Combine this with a blocker such as Gamban if you want to cover websites too. Our step-by-step guide to blocking casino apps with Screen Time walks through the settings.
What happens if I fail a casino app age check?
You won't be able to deposit or play until the operator confirms your age. That usually means uploading a document such as a passport or driving licence. Failures are often caused by typos, a recent move or not being on the electoral roll. Contact support rather than opening a new account. See casino app verification failed.
