Blocking casino apps with Digital Wellbeing
Blocking casino apps with Digital Wellbeing means pausing them with Focus mode or capping them with app timers, both built into Android. Neither is a hard lock on its own, so this guide shows how to make them firmer with a PIN held by someone else, and how to close the APK and browser gaps Android leaves open.
Key takeaways
- Focus mode pauses chosen casino apps and silences their notifications until you turn it off.
- App timers close an app and dim its icon when time runs out, but they reset at midnight.
- On some phones, an app limits PIN stops timers being changed without a four-digit code.
- Keep Install unknown apps switched off so a casino APK can’t slip past the block.
- Pair Digital Wellbeing with GAMSTOP and a bank block, and call 0808 8020 133 for free support.

What blocking casino apps with Digital Wellbeing can and can’t do
Digital Wellbeing is Google’s screen-time toolkit for Android. Google’s help page on managing your time with Digital Wellbeing (opens in a new tab) describes two features that matter for gambling: Focus mode, which pauses chosen apps, and app timers, which close an app once its daily allowance is used up. Our Digital Wellbeing glossary entry covers the wider dashboard.
Unlike Apple’s age-rating filter, Digital Wellbeing doesn’t block apps by category. You pick each casino app by name. And because the tools were built to curb distraction rather than enforce rules, the person using the phone can usually switch them off in a couple of taps. The aim of this guide is to stack the settings so that switching them off takes effort and time.
Google says some Digital Wellbeing steps vary by device. Samsung, Pixel and other phones may word menus differently, so look for the closest match if a label below isn’t on your screen.
Find every casino app on your Android phone first
Because Digital Wellbeing works app by app, you need a full list. Casino apps don’t always have obvious names, and some sportsbook apps carry a casino tab. This table shows how five UK brands name their apps on Google Play, which helps when scrolling through the app timer list.
| Google Play name | Developer on the listing | Content rating |
|---|---|---|
| Coral™ Casino: Slots & Games | LC International Limited | PEGI 18 |
| Ladbrokes Casino Slots & Games | Ladbrokes Mobile Development | PEGI 18 |
| PlayOJO: Online Casino Games | Skill On Net Ltd | PEGI 18 |
| Casumo - Live Casino & Slots | Casumo Services Limited | PEGI 18 |
| 10bet: Sports Betting & Casino | Blue Star Planet Ltd | PEGI 18 |
Check your app drawer for sports betting, bingo and lottery-style apps too. If a sportsbook has a casino section, it belongs on the list. Our explainer on why some sportsbook apps include a casino explains why so many do.
Pause casino apps with Focus mode on Android
Focus mode is the closest thing Digital Wellbeing has to an on-off block. Google says paused apps can’t be used and don’t send notifications while Focus mode is on. You can run it now or on a schedule.
- Open Settings and tap Digital Wellbeing and parental controls. If it’s your first visit, set up your profile.
- Tap Focus mode.
- Select every casino and betting app from your list.
- Tap Set a schedule and choose every day, covering the hours you’re most likely to gamble, or as close to all day as the schedule allows.
- Tap Turn on now so the pause starts straight away.
- Open one of the paused apps to check it no longer starts.
The weak spot is the Take a break button, which temporarily unpauses apps, and the Turn off now option. Both are one tap away. Focus mode is therefore best for quietening casino notifications and adding a moment of friction, rather than as a lock. If notifications trigger urges, our page on notifications and gambling urges has more ideas.
Using Digital Wellbeing app timers on casino apps
App timers set a daily allowance for each app. Google says that when the time runs out, the app closes and its icon dims. To set one, open Digital Wellbeing and parental controls, tap App timers, tap Set timer next to the app, choose a duration and tap OK.
For blocking, set the shortest allowance the timer offers. That leaves a sliver of time each day, so the app opens briefly then closes, which is often enough to break an automatic tap-and-play habit.
Two limits are worth knowing. Timers reset at midnight, and Google notes that deleting the timer is the way to use the app again before then. So anyone who can open the settings can remove it. That is why the PIN in the next section matters.
Lock timers with an app limits PIN held by someone else
On some phones, Digital Wellbeing offers a PIN for app time limits. Google describes it under Digital Wellbeing and parental controls, then App limits, then App limits PIN: you turn on the PIN for app time limits, enter four digits and confirm.
Once set, changing a timer needs the PIN. If a partner, friend or relative enters the code without you watching, the timers become a real barrier rather than a reminder. Google’s own advice is not to share the PIN, which is exactly the point here: the person who sets it keeps it.
If your phone doesn’t show this option, the same idea applies to other tools. A bank block with a cooling-off delay, or Gamban set up by someone else, gives similar protection. Our guide to blocking gambling apps with Gamban explains that route.
Close the APK gap on Android
Android lets people install apps from outside Google Play, known as sideloading. A casino APK downloaded from a website wouldn’t be on your Digital Wellbeing list, so it could slip past every timer you’ve set.
Since Android 8.0, the old global unknown sources switch has been replaced by a per-app permission. Google’s Android team explained in its 2017 post on safer app installs (opens in a new tab) that each app must be approved before it can prompt installs, and that approval can be revoked at any time.
- Open Settings and search for Install unknown apps.
- Check each listed app, especially browsers and file managers.
- Set each one to not allowed.
- Remove any casino APK already on the phone.
Google Play Protect also checks for harmful apps from other sources, as its help page on Play Protect (opens in a new tab) says. Our guides to casino APK files and whether a casino APK is safe explain the risks.
Casino websites in Chrome: site timers
Blocking an app doesn’t stop the casino’s mobile site. Digital Wellbeing has a partial answer: Google describes site timers for Chrome. From the Digital Wellbeing chart, tap Chrome, then Show sites, and tap Set site timer next to a site.
This only covers sites you’ve already visited and only in Chrome. Other browsers and new casino sites aren’t caught. For full website blocking, software such as Gamban, or GAMSTOP closing the accounts themselves, does more of the work.
Digital Wellbeing compared with other gambling blocks
| Tool | What it stops | Can you undo it quickly? | Covers other devices? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Focus mode | Chosen apps and their notifications | Yes, one tap | No |
| App timers | Use beyond a daily allowance | Yes, unless a PIN is set | No |
| App limits PIN | Changes to timers | Only with the PIN | No |
| GAMSTOP | Gambling with all GB-licensed online operators | No, runs for 6 months to 5 years | Yes |
| Bank gambling block | Card payments to gambling firms | Usually after a delay | Yes, wherever the card is used |
iPhone users have a firmer built-in option, because Apple can block apps by age rating. See our guide to blocking casino apps with Screen Time if you also use an iPad or iPhone.
Digital Wellbeing casino block not working? Fixes
- The app still opens: check it’s in Focus mode’s list and that the schedule is active today.
- Timer vanished: timers reset at midnight, and deleting one removes the limit. Ask your PIN holder to check it.
- No Digital Wellbeing menu: some phones place it under a slightly different name, or show it only after you turn on Show icon in the app list.
- Work profile apps aren’t limited: Google notes some work and school accounts might not work with app timers.
- Casino found in the browser: add a Chrome site timer, and consider Gamban for broader cover.
Our device guides for Samsung Galaxy phones and Google Pixel phones cover how casino apps behave on each.
Stronger steps beyond Digital Wellbeing
If the phone-level block keeps getting switched off, it may be time for something you can’t undo. GAMSTOP (opens in a new tab) blocks you from all online gambling companies licensed in Great Britain for 6 months, 1 year or 5 years. A bank block stops card payments; our guide to gambling blocks on banking apps covers each bank.
UK casino apps also have their own limits and exclusion tools. The Ladbrokes app’s safer gambling tools and the 10bet app’s safer gambling tools are set from your account, and our guide to setting deposit limits in a casino app explains how limits work.

Frequently asked questions
Can I block gambling apps on Android with Digital Wellbeing?
Yes, but Digital Wellbeing slows gambling apps down rather than locking them out. Focus mode pauses chosen apps and their notifications, and app timers close an app when its daily allowance runs out. Both can be switched off by whoever holds the phone, unless an app limits PIN is set by someone else. For a firmer block, add GAMSTOP and a bank block. Our Android blocking overview sets out every option.
Do Digital Wellbeing app timers reset?
Yes, Digital Wellbeing app timers reset at midnight every day. Google says that when the time runs out, the app closes and its icon dims until the next day. Deleting the timer also restores access straight away, which is why a timer works best with an app limits PIN that someone else holds. Our Digital Wellbeing glossary entry explains the other parts of the dashboard.
What is the difference between Focus mode and app timers?
Focus mode pauses apps completely while it’s on, while app timers allow a set amount of use each day. Focus mode suits blocking whole periods, such as evenings, and also stops notifications. App timers suit cutting use down to almost nothing. Focus mode has a Take a break button, so it’s easy to override. Used together on every casino app, they add friction. Our Gamban guide covers a firmer alternative.
Can a casino APK get round Digital Wellbeing?
A casino APK installed after you set your timers won’t be on your Focus mode or timer list, so it could slip through. Since Android 8.0, each app needs separate permission to install other apps, and you can revoke it at any time. Keep that permission off for your browsers and file managers. Google Play permits licensed real-money casino apps in the UK, and our guide to casino APK files explains why a download from elsewhere is a warning sign.
Does Digital Wellbeing work on Samsung phones?
Digital Wellbeing is available on many Android phones, including Samsung models, but Google says some steps vary by device. Menu names and where the tools sit can differ, so search Settings for Digital Wellbeing or Focus mode if you can’t find it. The core idea of pausing chosen casino apps or setting timers is the same. Our Samsung Galaxy casino apps page explains how casino apps run on those phones.
Will Digital Wellbeing stop casino websites?
Only partly. Digital Wellbeing can set site timers for websites in Chrome that appear in its usage chart, but it doesn’t block other browsers or new sites you haven’t visited. Most UK casinos run a mobile website as well as an app, so this gap matters. Gamban blocks gambling sites more widely, and GAMSTOP stops your accounts working whatever browser you use. See our GAMSTOP page for how it works.
How do I make a Digital Wellbeing block harder to undo?
The most effective way is to let someone you trust set the app limits PIN, so you can’t change timers without asking them. On phones without that option, you can add other layers: a bank gambling block with a cooling-off delay, Gamban installed by someone else, or GAMSTOP, which can’t be cancelled early. Our guide to gambling blocks on banking apps explains the delays each bank uses.
Where can I get help if I keep switching blocks off?
The National Gambling Helpline is free, confidential and open 24/7 on 0808 8020 133, with live chat and WhatsApp through GamCare. Turning blocks off repeatedly is common, and advisers won’t judge you for it. They can talk through what’s driving the urge and help with stronger steps such as self-exclusion. Our help and support page lists NHS clinics and peer support groups as well.
