Are casino apps safe to download?
Are casino apps safe to download? Generally yes, when you install the official listing from the Apple App Store or Google Play and the publisher is a Gambling Commission-licensed company. The real risks come from copycat apps, files installed from outside the stores, weak account security and handing over more data than you realise.
Key takeaways
- Install only from the App Store or Google Play, and match the publisher name to the licensed company.
- Both stores make gambling developers prove their licence before a real-money app goes live.
- Read the privacy label: it shows what data the app links to you and whether it tracks you.
- Turn on automatic updates and two-step verification once the app is installed.
- Safest source
- Apple App Store or Google Play
- Price
- Free (both stores require it)
- Age rating
- 18+ (iOS) / PEGI 18 (Android)
- Smallest partner app
- PlayOJO, 25.4 MB on iOS
- Licence check
- Gambling Commission public register
Are casino apps safe to download? What decides it
A casino app from a licensed operator, installed through the official store, is about as safe as any other finance-style app on your phone. The download itself is not where most problems start.
Safety depends on four things: where the file comes from, who published it, what data it asks for and how well you protect the account afterwards. Get those right and the main remaining risk is the gambling itself, which the house edge makes a cost rather than an income.
For the legal side of the question, see are casino apps legal in the UK?, and for a broader overview read our guide to whether casino apps are safe. More answers sit in our questions hub.
What Apple and Google check before a casino app goes live
Gambling apps get more scrutiny than a typical game. Apple calls gambling one of the most regulated offerings on its store and tells developers to expect extra review time. Its guidelines also say apps in regulated fields such as gambling should come from the legal entity providing the service, not an individual developer.
Google goes further on paperwork. Its gambling application form (opens in a new tab) asks for the licensee's name and address, licence type and number, the issuing regulator, copies of the licences and the app's package name. Approved apps must carry an Adults Only rating, an 18+ notice and a responsible gambling statement with local support resources, and the listing can't offer install incentives.
None of this proves an app is well run, but it does make it hard for an unlicensed outfit to slip a real-money casino into the British storefront. Our pages on Apple App Store rules for casino apps and Google Play rules for casino apps list the full requirements.
Official casino app listings: names and publishers to look for
Copycat apps rely on names that look close enough at a glance. Checking the exact title and publisher is the quickest defence. These are the British listings for our five partner apps as published in each store:
| App Store name | Seller | Size | Requires |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coral Casino: Slots & Games | Entain | 101.6 MB | iOS 18.0 or later |
| Ladbrokes Casino Games & Slots | Entain | 101.2 MB | iOS 18.0 or later |
| PlayOJO Real Money Casino | Skill On Net Ltd | 25.4 MB | iOS 15.0 or later |
| Casumo Casino & Sports Betting | Casumo | 52.5 MB | iOS 15.0 or later |
| 10bet: Sports Betting & Casino | 10bet Limited | 112.3 MB | iOS 16.0 or later |
| Google Play name | Developer | Content rating |
|---|---|---|
| Coral™ Casino: Slots & Games | LC International Limited | PEGI 18 |
| Ladbrokes Casino Slots & Games | Ladbrokes Mobile Development | PEGI 18 |
| PlayOJO: Online Casino Games | Skill On Net Ltd | PEGI 18 |
| Casumo - Live Casino & Slots | Casumo Services Limited | PEGI 18 |
| 10bet: Sports Betting & Casino | Blue Star Planet Ltd | PEGI 18 |
Notice that names don't always match across platforms: Ladbrokes uses "Games & Slots" on iPhone and "Slots & Games" on Android, and Casumo's iPhone app includes its sportsbook while the Android title is casino-focused. Small differences like these are normal for genuine apps. A publisher you don't recognise is not. The Coral iPhone app, Ladbrokes Android app and PlayOJO iPhone app pages cover each listing in detail.
How to download a casino app safely
- Open the App Store or Google Play app itself, rather than following a link in a text message or social media post.
- Search for the brand and compare the title with the exact store name shown in the tables above.
- Tap the publisher name and confirm it is the operator or its parent group, not an unknown developer.
- Check the age rating shows 18+ on iPhone or PEGI 18 on Android, as every real-money app should.
- Scroll to the privacy section and read what the app collects before you tap Get or Install.
- Once installed, look up the operator's company name on the Gambling Commission's public register before your first deposit.
Step-by-step help for each platform is in our guides to downloading a casino app on iPhone and installing a casino app on Android.
What casino apps collect: reading the privacy label
Every App Store listing carries a privacy label, and the differences between casino apps are bigger than you might expect. Some apps say they use data to track you across other companies' apps and websites; others show no tracking category at all.
| App | Used to track you | Location on the label |
|---|---|---|
| Coral Casino | User Content, Usage Data | Coarse location, linked to you |
| Ladbrokes Casino | No tracking category shown | Precise location, not linked to you |
| PlayOJO | Identifiers | Not listed on the label |
| Casumo | Identifiers, Usage Data, Diagnostics | Not listed on the label |
| 10bet | Usage Data | Not listed on the label |
Financial and contact details appear as linked data on most of these labels, which is expected for an app that takes payments and must verify who you are. PlayOJO's iPhone listing also says the app may use your location even when it isn't open, which can reduce battery life. Our guide to reading a casino app privacy label and our explainer on casino app permissions help you decide what to allow.
Is it safe to download a casino app as an APK?
On Android you can install apps from outside Google Play using an APK file. That route skips the store's checks, so it carries more risk. Google Play Protect still scans your device for potentially harmful apps from other sources, may ask to send unknown apps to Google for evaluation and can disable or remove harmful ones.
Since Android 8.0, permission to install from unknown sources is given app by app rather than switched on globally, and you can withdraw it at any time. All five of our partner apps are listed on the British Google Play store, so there is little reason to sideload any of them. If an operator directs you to an APK, check its own help pages and the Commission's register first. See is it safe to download a casino APK? and Google Play Protect and casino apps.
Keeping a casino app account secure after you install it
A safe download can still lead to an unsafe account if the password is weak or reused. The National Cyber Security Centre advises installing app and software updates as soon as they're available (opens in a new tab) and turning on automatic updates. It also says two-step verification makes accounts harder to break into even when a password is known.
Biometric login is another option where the app supports it. Casumo's iPhone listing mentions Face ID and Touch ID login; the other partner listings don't mention it, so check inside the app. According to Apple's Face ID security notes (opens in a new tab), your face data stays on the device and apps are only told whether authentication succeeded. Read more in two-factor authentication for casino accounts and Face ID and Touch ID on casino apps.
Is your money safe in a downloaded casino app?
Licensed operators must tell you how your balance is protected if the business fails, using one of three ratings: not protected, medium or high. You have to acknowledge the rating before your first deposit is used, and since 31 October 2025 operators with no protection must remind you every six months. The Commission's guide to what happens if a gambling business goes bust (opens in a new tab) explains each level.
Other safeguards are built into the rules. Credit cards can't be used to gamble, and Coral and Ladbrokes say withdrawals go back to the method you deposited with. Their help centres also limit UK customers to three active payment methods in a rolling 30 days. See customer funds protection for the detail.
Warning signs of an unsafe casino app
- It asks you to pay to download it, or to buy gambling credit through in-app purchase. Both stores ban this for real-money apps.
- The publisher name doesn't match any company on the Gambling Commission's register.
- You were sent a download link by text or direct message rather than finding the app in the store.
- It offers to let you play from anywhere, ignoring location rules both stores require.
- It accepts credit cards or promises bonuses with no terms at all.
- It has no visible safer-gambling tools, no 18+ notice and no way to self-exclude.
Our guide to fake casino apps and scams gives examples of how these apps present themselves, and what is a fake casino app? answers the basics.
A safe download is only half of staying safe
The tools that protect you from overspending matter as much as the app's security. Since 31 October 2025, licensed apps must prompt you to set a financial limit before your first deposit, and you can choose how often you see a reality check showing how long you've been playing.
Outside the app, Screen Time on iPhone and Digital Wellbeing on Android can restrict or time-limit apps, GAMSTOP blocks all British-licensed gambling sites and apps, and many banks offer gambling blocks on cards. Frequently asked questions
Can a casino app give my phone a virus?
A casino app installed from the official App Store or Google Play is very unlikely to harm your phone, because both stores review apps and Google Play Protect scans for harmful software. The risk rises sharply with APK files from websites or links sent by message, which skip the store's checks. Stick to the official listing and keep your phone updated. Our guide to Google Play Protect and casino apps explains what the scanner does.
How do I know a casino app download is genuine?
Compare the exact app name and publisher with the operator's details and the Gambling Commission's register. Genuine listings show an 18+ or PEGI 18 rating, are free to download and name a company such as Entain, LC International Limited or Skill On Net Ltd as publisher. Search inside the store app rather than tapping links in texts or social posts. The Coral iPhone app page shows what a genuine listing contains.
Is it safe to download a casino APK instead of using Google Play?
It is riskier, because an APK installed from outside Google Play skips the store's review. Android asks you to approve each app that wants to install files, and Play Protect still checks for harmful apps, but neither confirms the casino is licensed. All five of our partner apps are on the British Google Play store, so sideloading is rarely needed. Read is it safe to install a casino APK? before trying it.
What personal data do casino apps collect?
Most casino apps collect contact details, financial information, identifiers and usage data, and some also collect location. The App Store privacy label shows which items are linked to you and which are used to track you. Coral's label lists coarse location linked to you, for example, while Ladbrokes shows precise location not linked to you. Our page on what a casino app privacy label means explains each category.
Are casino apps safer than casino websites?
Not automatically, because the same licence, account and rules apply whichever you use. An app does add store vetting and a fixed download source, which removes the risk of landing on a lookalike website. A website avoids storage use and privacy permissions. Security depends more on your password, updates and two-step verification than on the format. Compare the two in are casino apps more secure than websites?
Is it safe to save my card in a casino app?
Saving a debit card is generally reasonable in a licensed app, provided your phone and account are well protected. Use a screen lock, strong unique password and two-step verification where offered, and remember credit cards can't be used for gambling in Great Britain at all. If you share your phone, don't save payment details. Our answer on saving your card in a casino app goes into the trade-offs.
Why does a casino app ask for my location?
Apple and Google both require real-money gambling apps to be geo-restricted to the places their licences cover, so apps need some way to confirm where you are. Privacy labels show how this is handled: Coral lists coarse location and Ladbrokes precise location. Neither store says geo-restriction must use GPS, so methods vary. Read why a casino app needs my location and our guide to location tracking in casino apps.
Which casino app is the safest to download in the UK?
There isn't a single safest app; any licensed operator's official listing is a sound starting point. Beyond that, compare privacy labels, check whether the app offers biometric login or two-step verification, and look at how clearly its safer-gambling tools are signposted. Ladbrokes shows no tracking category on its iPhone label, while PlayOJO's app is the smallest download among our partners at 25.4 MB. See what is the safest casino app UK?
