APK meaning for casino apps

An APK (Android Package Kit) is the file format Android uses to install an app. Google Play handles it for you behind the scenes; downloading one yourself from a website is called sideloading. For UK casino apps, the licensed operators we cover are on Google Play, so you normally have no reason to touch an APK.

Key takeaways

  • An APK is the installer file behind every Android app.
  • Installing one from outside Google Play is called sideloading and skips the store's checks.
  • Since Android 8.0, you must allow each app (such as a browser) to install unknown apps separately.
  • Coral, Ladbrokes, PlayOJO, Casumo and 10bet all list their Android apps on Google Play in the UK.

What APK means

APK is short for Android Package Kit. It's a single file that bundles an app's code, images and settings so Android can install it. Every app on an Android phone arrived as one, whether you noticed or not.

When you tap install in Google Play, the store fetches the package, checks it and installs it for you. When you download an APK file from a website and open it yourself, you are sideloading. The file format is the same; what changes is who checked it first. The wider casino app glossary has more Android terms.

That second row is the one that matters for gambling. Google's real-money gambling policy (opens in a new tab) says a developer needs a valid gambling licence for every country where the app is distributed, and must keep out under-18s and anyone outside the licensed area. An APK passed around on the web carries none of those assurances.

How APK installs work on Android

Older Android versions had a single switch that allowed installs from unknown sources. In August 2017 Google explained that, from Android 8.0 Oreo, this became a per-app permission (opens in a new tab). You now approve a specific app, such as your browser or file manager, before it can prompt an install, and you can take that approval back at any time.

Google Play Protect adds another layer. Google says it runs a safety check on Play Store apps before download and also checks your device for potentially harmful apps from other sources. It can warn you, ask to send an unknown app for deeper analysis, and switch off or remove apps it judges harmful. Our guide to Google Play Protect and casino apps goes further.

Do UK casino apps need an APK?

For the licensed brands we review, no. Google's country list for gambling apps includes the United Kingdom for online casino games, and Google named the UK among its permitted countries in January 2020. Each of our five partners has an Android listing available in Great Britain.

The package ID is the app's unique name inside Android, and it appears in the Google Play web address. If a site offers a file claiming to be one of these apps, the safer move is to ignore it and install from the store listing instead. Our page on why some casino apps are not on Google Play explains the exceptions.

APK risks to weigh before sideloading anything

  • No licence check. A file on a website hasn't passed Google's gambling application, so it could come from an operator with no UK licence and no Gambling Commission protection.
  • Tampered copies. A package can be repackaged with extra code; only the store route ties it to the named developer.
  • Missed updates. Security fixes arrive through the store, and a sideloaded copy can quietly fall behind.
  • Lingering permissions. If you allowed your browser to install apps once, that approval stays until you remove it.

If you have already sideloaded something, go to your phone's settings, find the app you allowed to install unknown apps and switch that permission off. Then run a Play Protect scan. Our guide is it safe to download a casino APK walks through it.

An APK sits alongside several other words you'll see on casino app pages. A native app is one built for the phone's own system, and almost every Android native app arrives as an APK. Play Protect is Google's scanning service, and an app store listing is the public page where you install from. On Android tablets the same rules apply; see casino apps on Android phones.

Frequently asked questions

What does APK stand for?

APK stands for Android Package Kit. It's the file type Android uses to install apps, holding the code and resources in one bundle. Every app on an Android phone is installed from one, but Google Play normally handles the file for you so you never see it. Downloading an APK from a website yourself is called sideloading. Our sideloading definition explains the difference in more detail.

Is it safe to install a casino APK?

It carries more risk than installing from Google Play. A sideloaded file hasn't passed Google's checks, including its requirement that gambling apps hold a valid licence for each country they serve. The file could be tampered with or come from an unlicensed site with no UK protection. Since the licensed brands we cover are all on Google Play, the store is the safer route. Read is it safe to install a casino APK.

Why would a casino offer an APK instead of a Play Store app?

A licensed UK operator has little reason to, because Google Play accepts licensed gambling apps in the UK. A download offered only as an APK is therefore a reason to look harder at who runs the site and whether it appears on the Gambling Commission's register. Our guide to why some casino apps are not on Google Play covers the legitimate reasons an app might be missing.

Can I install an APK on an iPhone?

No. APK files are an Android format and won't run on an iPhone or iPad. Apple devices install apps through the App Store, where real-money gambling apps must be licensed, geo-restricted and free to download. If you're on iPhone, search the App Store for the brand's listing instead. Our guide to downloading a casino app on iPhone covers the steps.

How do I stop my phone installing unknown APKs?

Remove the install permission from any app you previously allowed. Since Android 8.0, each app needs its own approval to install unknown apps, and you can revoke it whenever you like in your phone's settings. Keeping Play Protect switched on adds a scan for harmful apps from outside the store. For blocking gambling apps more broadly, see blocking casino apps with Digital Wellbeing.

Does an APK casino app get updates?

Not automatically through Google Play. Apps installed from the store receive updates there, while a sideloaded copy usually needs a fresh file downloaded and installed each time. That makes it easy to fall behind on security fixes, which the NCSC advises installing as soon as they're available. Our guide on how to update a casino app explains the store route.
