Sideloading and casino apps
Sideloading means installing an app from somewhere other than the official app store, usually by downloading an installer file from a website. On Android it's possible with your permission, but for UK casino apps it's rarely necessary, because licensed operators can list real-money apps on Google Play in Great Britain.
Key takeaways
- Sideloading is installing an app from outside Google Play or the App Store.
- Android asks you to approve each app, such as a browser, before it can install others.
- A sideloaded app skips the store's licence and age checks for gambling apps.
- All five of our partner casinos have Android apps on Google Play in the UK.
- You can withdraw an install permission at any time once you no longer need it.

What sideloading means
Most apps reach your phone through a store: you search, tap install and the store does the rest. Sideloading is the alternative route. You get the installer yourself, usually an APK file on Android, and open it so the phone installs the app directly.
The word describes the method, not the app. A perfectly genuine app can be sideloaded, and so can a harmful one. What disappears is the store's review in between. That's the part that matters for gambling, and it's why sideloading sits in our casino app glossary next to Play Protect and native app.
Why sideloading matters for casino apps
Google only lets a real-money gambling app onto Google Play after the developer completes an application process and shows a valid licence for each country where the app is offered. The app must also keep out under-18s and block areas outside the licence. Google's country list for gambling apps (opens in a new tab) includes the United Kingdom for online casino games.
A sideloaded casino app has been through none of that. You'd be relying entirely on the website you downloaded it from. Fake gambling apps and unlicensed operators offer no Gambling Commission protection, so if anything goes wrong with your money there's no British regulator or approved dispute service behind you. Our guide to fake casino apps and scams shows the warning signs.
| Check | From Google Play | Sideloaded |
|---|---|---|
| Gambling licence shown to Google | Required for each country | Not checked |
| Under-18 and location controls | Required by Google's policy | Not checked |
| Store safety scan before download | Yes, by Play Protect | No; Play Protect may scan the device later |
| Updates | Through Google Play | Manual, from the same source |
| Age rating on the listing | PEGI 18 on partner apps | None |
How sideloading works on Android
Android used to have a single switch for unknown sources. Google's Android Developers Blog explained in August 2017 that Android 8.0 Oreo replaced it with a per-app permission (opens in a new tab). You now approve an individual app, for example your browser or a file manager, before it can ask to install anything, and you can revoke that approval whenever you like.
If you've ever granted it and want to tidy up, the process is short. Menu names vary between phone makers, so look for the option rather than an exact path.
- Open your phone's Settings.
- Search for 'install unknown apps' or look under special app access.
- Check which apps are allowed to install other apps.
- Turn the permission off for any you no longer need.
Play Protect adds a safety net. Google says it checks your device for potentially harmful apps from other sources and can warn you, or switch off or remove harmful apps. Our guide to Google Play Protect and casino apps explains what to do if it flags something.
Do you need to sideload a UK casino app?
Not for the apps we review in depth. Coral, Ladbrokes, PlayOJO, Casumo and 10bet each list their Android app on Google Play for British users, so the store route is open. If a website offers you a direct download for a brand that's also on Google Play, the store version is the safer choice.
Some smaller operators may choose not to publish on Google Play, and some devices, such as phones without Google services, can't reach it at all. Our answers on why a casino app isn't on Google Play and whether it's safe to install a casino APK cover those cases.

Frequently asked questions
Is sideloading illegal in the UK?
Installing an app from outside the store isn't illegal in itself, and Android lets you do it with your permission. The issue for gambling is who is behind the app. Only operators licensed by the Gambling Commission can legally offer gambling to people in Great Britain, and a sideloaded app gives you no store check that the operator is one of them. Our guide on spotting an unlicensed casino app explains how to check.
Can I sideload casino apps on an iPhone?
In the UK, iPhone apps normally come through the App Store, and every partner app we cover is listed there. Apple's guidelines require real-money gambling apps to be licensed where they're used, geo-restricted and free on the store. If a site asks you to install a casino app on iPhone some other way, treat it with suspicion. Our iPhone download guide walks through the official route.
Why would a casino offer a direct download?
Sometimes because an app isn't on the store for a particular device, and sometimes because the operator isn't eligible for the store at all. A licensed brand with a Google Play listing gives you little reason to use its direct file instead. If you're unsure, check the operator on the Gambling Commission's register before you install. Our page on why some casino apps are not on Google Play explains common reasons.
Does Play Protect check sideloaded apps?
Yes. Google says Play Protect checks your device for potentially harmful apps from other sources, not just those from the store. It can warn you, ask to send an unknown app for deeper analysis, and deactivate or remove apps it considers harmful. It isn't a licence check, though, so it can't tell you whether a casino is authorised in Britain. See our Play Protect definition for more.
How do I update a sideloaded app?
Usually by downloading a newer installer from the same source and installing it over the old one, because Google Play won't manage updates for an app it didn't install. That puts the job of spotting genuine updates on you. Store-installed apps update through Google Play, which is simpler and keeps security fixes coming. Our guide on how to update a casino app covers both platforms.
