Play Protect explained
Play Protect is Google's built-in security service for Android that checks apps for harmful behaviour, both before you download from Google Play and on your device afterwards. For casino app users it's a useful malware filter, but it doesn't check whether a gambling operator is licensed in Great Britain.
Key takeaways
- Play Protect scans Google Play apps before download and checks apps from other sources on your device.
- It can warn you, ask to analyse an unknown app, and switch off or remove harmful apps.
- It looks for harmful software, not for a Gambling Commission licence.
- A warning about a casino app is a reason to stop and check, not to override it.

What Play Protect is
Play Protect is part of Google Play on Android phones and tablets. Google describes it as a service that checks apps and devices for harmful behaviour. You don't install it separately; it comes with Google Play on devices that have Google services.
Think of it as a guard on the door and a patrol inside. It inspects apps from the store before you download them, and it looks over apps that arrived another way, which is where sideloading comes in. It sits in our glossary of app terms alongside the data safety section, which covers privacy rather than security.
What Play Protect does and doesn't check
According to Google's Play Protect help page (opens in a new tab), the service runs a safety check on Play Store apps before you download them and checks your device for potentially harmful apps from other sources. It can ask you to send an unknown app to Google for a deeper, code-level evaluation.
| Question | Does Play Protect answer it? | Where to look instead |
|---|---|---|
| Is this app harmful software? | Yes, that's its job | – |
| Is the operator licensed in Great Britain? | No | The Gambling Commission public register |
| Was the app approved for real-money gambling on Google Play? | Not directly | Whether it's listed on Google Play in the UK |
| What data does the app collect? | No | The data safety section on the listing |
| Is the app suitable for under-18s? | No | The PEGI 18 content rating on the listing |
The licence question is handled separately. Google's real-money gambling policy (opens in a new tab) requires a valid licence for every country an app is offered in, and that review happens when the developer applies, not through Play Protect.
What a Play Protect warning on a casino app means
If Play Protect flags a gambling app, it has spotted something it considers potentially harmful, or it doesn't recognise the app. Google says it can warn you and, in some cases, deactivate or remove the app. With real money and identity documents involved, the sensible response is caution.
- Don't open or log in to the flagged app.
- Note the app's name and where you downloaded it from.
- Search for the operator on the Gambling Commission's public register.
- If the brand is licensed, uninstall the flagged copy and install the official app from Google Play.
- If you entered card details or a password, contact your bank and change the password from a trusted device.

Play Protect and licensed UK casino apps
Apps installed from Google Play, such as Coral Casino or Ladbrokes Casino, have been through the store's pre-download check. All five of our partners publish Android apps on Google Play for British users, with a PEGI 18 rating, so there's no need to fetch them from elsewhere.
Keeping Play Protect switched on costs nothing and adds a layer on top of good habits: updating your casino app when prompted and using two-factor authentication where an operator offers it. For a wider view, read are casino apps safe.

Frequently asked questions
Is Play Protect enough to keep me safe from fake casino apps?
It helps, but it isn't the whole answer. Play Protect looks for harmful software, while a fake or unlicensed casino can harm you simply by taking deposits it never returns, which a malware scan won't catch. Install casino apps from Google Play and check the operator on the Gambling Commission's register. Our guide on how to spot an unlicensed casino app lists other checks.
Why did Play Protect block a casino app I downloaded?
Usually because the app came from outside Google Play and Play Protect judged it potentially harmful or didn't recognise it. Google says it can warn about, deactivate or remove such apps. If the casino is a licensed brand, delete that copy and install its official app from the store instead. Our answer on whether it's safe to install a casino APK explains the risks.
Can I turn Play Protect off to install a casino app?
Android lets you change Play Protect settings, but switching it off to get past a warning on a gambling app isn't wise. The warning exists because the app looks risky or unknown, and you'd be handing that app your payment details and ID. A licensed UK operator on Google Play doesn't need you to do this. See our Android install guide for the standard route.
Does Play Protect work on Huawei or Amazon Fire devices?
Play Protect is part of Google Play, so it's tied to devices that have Google services. Devices without Google Play, which include some recent Huawei phones and Amazon Fire tablets, rely on their own stores and security tools instead. That also affects which casino apps you can install. Our answers on Huawei phones and Amazon Fire cover the options.
Does Play Protect slow down casino apps?
Google doesn't publish performance figures for Play Protect, and its checks mostly run when apps are installed or during periodic device scans, rather than while you're using an app. If a casino app is slow or crashing, an outdated app version, low storage or a weak connection are more likely causes. Our casino app keeps crashing guide covers the usual fixes.
