Google Play Protect and casino apps

Google Play Protect and casino apps meet in two places: the safety check Google runs before you download a casino app from the Play Store, and the scans it makes of anything else on your phone. It's a strong malware filter, but it doesn't check whether a casino is licensed, fair or right for you.

Key takeaways

  • Play Protect checks Play Store apps before download and scans your phone for harmful apps from other sources.
  • It can warn about, deactivate or remove a harmful app, and may ask to send an unknown app to Google for review.
  • It looks at app behaviour, not gambling licences, so a clean scan doesn't prove a casino is UK-regulated.
  • A Play Protect warning on a casino app you sideloaded is a reason to delete it, not to switch protection off.
  • To limit or block gambling apps, use Digital Wellbeing, GAMSTOP or a blocker, not Play Protect.

What Google Play Protect does on an Android phone

Google Play Protect is Google's built-in security service for Android phones that use the Play Store. Google's help page on Play Protect (opens in a new tab) describes three jobs: checking apps and devices for harmful behaviour, running a safety check on Play Store apps before you download them, and checking your device for potentially harmful apps from other sources.

When it meets an app it doesn't recognise, Play Protect may ask whether you want to send it to Google for a code-level evaluation. If it decides an app is potentially harmful, it can warn you, deactivate the app or remove it.

For a quick definition, see our Play Protect glossary entry. This guide looks at what all of that means for casino apps specifically.

Play Protect and casino apps: Play Store installs versus APKs

How much Play Protect does for you depends on where the casino app came from. The table sets out the difference.

Google Play Protect and casino apps by install route
StageCasino app from Google PlayCasino app from an APK file
Before installSafety check before downloadNo store check; Play Protect may scan when you install
Gambling licenceGoogle requires a valid licence for each country before listingNobody checks
Unknown codeNot applicable: Google has already seen the appMay ask to send the app to Google for evaluation

The gap in the middle row is the important one. Play Protect's malware checks work on both routes, but only the Play Store route adds Google's real-money gambling policy (opens in a new tab), which requires a licence, an under-18 block and geo-restriction before an app is listed. A sideloaded casino skips that entirely. Our explainer on casino APK files covers the file side, and is it safe to download a casino APK covers the risk.

What Play Protect can't tell you about a casino app

Play Protect answers a security question. Choosing a casino app raises several others that it doesn't touch.

  • Whether the operator is licensed in Great Britain. That's on the Gambling Commission's public register, not in a scan result.
  • Whether the games are fair. Game fairness is a matter for the operator's licence and independent testing, and Play Protect doesn't assess return-to-player figures.
  • What the app does with your data. That's what the developer declares in the Play Store's data safety section, which is a separate thing.
  • Whether the offer terms are reasonable. Bonus rules are set by the operator and capped by UK rules, such as the 10x wagering limit from 19 January 2026.
  • Whether gambling is affecting you. That's a question for safer-gambling tools and support services.

So treat a clean Play Protect result as a minimum, not a recommendation. Our checklist on how to choose a casino app and the guide to how casino apps are licensed in the UK cover the rest.

Play Protect versus the data safety section on casino apps

People often mix these up. Play Protect is Google scanning an app's behaviour. The data safety section on a Play Store listing is the developer's own statement of what data the app collects and shares. Both are worth reading, for different reasons.

Here's what the UK Google Play listings for our partner casino apps state in their data safety sections, as published on the listings.

How to run a Play Protect check on your casino apps

Play Protect runs in the background, but you can start a check yourself, for instance after removing an app you're unsure about. Exact wording varies a little between Android versions and phone makers.

  1. Open the Google Play Store app.
  2. Tap your profile picture and look for Play Protect in the menu.
  3. Check that scanning is switched on, then start a scan.
  4. Read any result in full, including the name of the app it flags.
  5. If it recommends removing an app, follow that advice, then restart the phone.
  6. Remove the install-unknown-apps permission from any browser or file app you no longer need it for.

That last step matters. Since Android 8.0, the right to install outside the Play Store is granted to individual apps, and Google's 2017 Android developers post (opens in a new tab) makes clear you can withdraw that approval whenever you like.

Play Protect warnings on casino apps and what to do

The precise wording of a warning changes over time, so focus on what it's telling you rather than the exact phrase.

If you've entered card details into an app Play Protect later flagged, contact your bank. Our guides to keeping your casino account secure and choosing a strong casino password have the follow-up steps.

Download pages that ask you to pause or disable Play Protect so a casino app will install are a strong warning sign. Licensed UK casino apps don't need it switched off, because they're on the Play Store.

Casino apps on Google Play that pass through Google's checks

Because they're listed on Google Play in the UK, the Android apps from our partner casinos go through the Play Store safety check before download and through Google's gambling application process before listing. Coral and Ladbrokes are run by LC International Limited (Gambling Commission account 54743), and PlayOJO by Skill On Net Limited (account 39326).

Each brand's Android page lists its exact store name and developer so you can match them before installing: the Coral Casino Android app, the Ladbrokes Android casino app and the PlayOJO Android app. If a brand you're after isn't listed, read why some casino apps are not on Google Play.

Play Protect isn't a gambling blocker

A licensed casino app isn't harmful software, so Play Protect won't stop you installing or opening one. If you want to cut down or stop, Android and UK services offer tools built for that job.

  • Digital Wellbeing app timers: Google's Digital Wellbeing help (opens in a new tab) says that when an app's daily time runs out it closes and its icon dims, with timers resetting at midnight.
  • GAMSTOP: blocks you from all online gambling companies licensed in Great Britain for 6 months, 1 year or 5 years.
  • Gamban: a paid blocking app for gambling sites and apps across your devices.
  • Bank blocks: many UK banks let you block gambling payments on your card or account.

Our guides to blocking casino apps with Digital Wellbeing and blocking gambling apps on Android explain each one. The National Gambling Helpline is free and open 24/7 on 0808 8020 133.

Keeping casino apps protected on Android

A few habits do more than any single scan. Keep Play Protect on. Install casino apps only from Google Play, under the developer name that matches the licence holder. Apply app and Android updates promptly, as the National Cyber Security Centre advises, and switch on two-step verification wherever the casino offers it.

Our guides on how to update a casino app and casino app permissions cover the details, and the Android phones device hub brings together everything for Android players.

Casino apps on Google Play with a welcome offer

Play Protect doesn't rate offers, so here's how ours relate: each of these three partner apps is a Google Play listing in the UK, installed through the normal store route. Offers are 18+, for new customers, and terms apply. They're slot spin offers, and the house edge means losing is the likelier outcome over time.

  • Coral Casino — deposit (some methods excluded) and bet £10 or more on slots to receive 100 free spins on selected games at 10p each. You have 48 hours to accept and 7 days to use them, and spin winnings carry no wagering. Deposits by Neteller, PayPal, Paysafe, Skrill, prepaid card and certain debit cards don't count. Available from 1 October 2026 to 1 February 2027.
  • Ladbrokes Casino — deposit and spend £10 or more on slots to receive 50 free spins each day for 10 days (500 at most), 10p each on selected games. Claim by 23:59 each day; spins are valid for 7 days with no wagering. Prepaid card, PayPal, Paysafe, Neteller, Skrill and Moneybookers deposits are excluded.
  • PlayOJO — make a first deposit of at least £10 to receive 80 free spins on Big Bass Bonanza at 10p each, no wagering, with winnings paid in cash. For new UK customers outside Northern Ireland, through the designated offer link only, and not combinable with other offers.

Coral and Ladbrokes share an operator, so new accounts at both may not be allowed. For every Android option, see the best casino apps for Android or go back to all casino app guides.

Frequently asked questions

Does Google Play Protect check casino apps?

Yes. Google Play Protect runs a safety check on Play Store apps, casino apps included, before you download them, and scans your device for harmful apps from other sources. It looks for harmful behaviour in the app, not at whether the casino is licensed or fair. Casino apps on Google Play have also been through Google's gambling licence requirements before listing. Our guide to installing a casino app on Android shows the store route step by step.

Why did Play Protect flag a casino app?

Play Protect flags apps it judges potentially harmful, or that it hasn't seen before and wants to evaluate. A flagged casino app is usually one installed from an APK rather than the Play Store. Genuine UK-licensed casino apps are listed on Google Play, so a warning on a sideloaded copy suggests deleting it and installing the store version instead. Our guide on whether it's safe to download a casino APK explains the risks.

Does a clean Play Protect scan mean a casino is safe?

No. A clean scan means Play Protect found no harmful behaviour in the app's code; it says nothing about the operator's licence, game fairness, withdrawal record or bonus terms. To judge the casino, check its entry on the Gambling Commission's public register and match it to the developer on the app listing. Our guide on how to spot an unlicensed casino app lists the checks worth making.

Should I turn off Play Protect to install a casino APK?

No. Switching Play Protect off removes a key safety check, and there's no need to do it for UK-licensed casino apps because they're on Google Play. A website telling you to disable Play Protect so its casino app will install is a warning sign in its own right. If you've already turned it off, switch it back on and run a scan. Our explainer on casino APK files covers why APKs still exist.

Can Play Protect remove a casino app from my phone?

Yes, if Google judges the app harmful. Google says Play Protect can warn about, deactivate or remove potentially harmful apps. A licensed casino app from the Play Store isn't malware, so it won't be removed for being a gambling app. If you want help staying away from casino apps, use a dedicated tool instead, such as Digital Wellbeing timers, GAMSTOP or a blocker. See can I block gambling apps on Android.

Is the data safety section the same as Play Protect?

No. The data safety section is the developer's own statement on the Play Store listing about what data an app collects and shares, while Play Protect is Google scanning how an app behaves. For example, the Ladbrokes Casino listing says the app shares and collects personal info and app activity, while PlayOJO's says no data is shared or collected. Our data safety section glossary entry explains each part of the label.

Does Play Protect work on Huawei or Amazon Fire devices?

Play Protect is part of Google Play, so it only helps on devices that run the Play Store. Some phones and tablets, such as Amazon Fire tablets, use a different app store, which also means UK casino apps from Google Play may not be available on them. On those devices a licensed casino's mobile website is often the simplest option. See do casino apps work on Amazon Fire and casino apps on Huawei phones.

How do I check whether a casino app on my phone is genuine?

Compare the app's name and developer with the Google Play listing and the operator's Gambling Commission licence holder. For example, Coral's Android app is published by LC International Limited and PlayOJO's by Skill On Net Ltd. If the app came from a file rather than the store, uninstall it and install the store version. Our fake casino apps and scams guide shows how lookalike apps try to pass as the real thing.
