What happens to a bet if your app crashes
What happens to a bet if your app crashes depends on how far the game had got. The game runs on the operator’s systems, not just inside the app on your phone. A bet with a result already decided is settled and paid as normal, an unfinished hand should be waiting when you reopen the game, and a stake taken with no result should be refunded. Here’s how to check, and what to do if the numbers don’t add up.
Key takeaways
- An app crash closes your view of the game; it doesn’t cancel a bet that was already accepted.
- Decided results stand, unfinished multi-step games should resume, and stakes with no outcome should be returned.
- A withdrawal request carries on after a crash, and UK rules stop it being reversed.
- Check your bank app before retrying a deposit that crashed mid-payment.
- If you disagree with a settlement, complain to the operator first, then to a free ADR service after eight weeks.
- Rule that applies
- Gambling Commission RTS 10
- Decided result
- Stands and is paid
- No outcome yet
- Stake returned to balance
- Operator complaint window
- 8 weeks
- IBAS binding limit
- Up to £10,000
What happens to a bet if your app crashes: the quick answer
Your bet is almost always safe. When a casino app crashes, it’s the screen on your phone that disappears, while the game round itself is recorded by the operator. The Gambling Commission requires every licensed operator to have fair, published rules for interrupted play and the systems to carry them out.
So the useful question isn’t whether the bet vanished, but which stage it reached. The table in the next section covers the common cases. If you were cut off by weak signal rather than a crash, our guide to how casino apps handle disconnections explains the network side, and the guides hub links every other troubleshooting page.
Crash scenarios and what should happen to your bet
The Commission’s standard on interrupted gambling (opens in a new tab) gives operators guidance for each type of game. Applied to an app crash, it looks like this.
| You were… | Stage reached | What should happen | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mid-spin on a slot | Spin accepted; outcome fixed | Result stands; any win credited | Balance and game history |
| Tapping spin as the app froze | Request may not have arrived | If no outcome was generated, stake returned | Whether a round shows in history |
| In a slot bonus with picks to make | Multi-stage game part-way | Last known state restored so you can finish | Reopen the same slot |
| Deciding hit or stand at blackjack | Multi-stage hand | Hand restored with the same cards | Reopen the same table |
| Betting on a live roulette round | Depends on whether betting closed with your bet in | If accepted, settled on the studio result | Game history for that round |
| On a networked jackpot slot | Jackpot pool affected by a failure | Jackpot values restored to pre-failure state | Jackpot amount and history |
Two principles run through the table. A result you could no longer influence is final, so a crash can’t undo a losing spin or cost you a winning one. And the operator should keep enough data to rebuild an unfinished game, including dealt cards and collected bonus items. See what happens if my app crashes mid-game for a shorter answer.
If the app crashes during a deposit or withdrawal
Crashes during payments worry people most, because real money is moving. They also follow different rules from game rounds.
During a deposit
Don’t retry straight away. Open your banking app first and see whether the payment left your account, is pending, or never started. Then check the casino app’s balance and transaction history. Retrying blind is how people end up paying twice, which counts towards your deposit limit and your net deposits. Our payment declined guide covers failed payments in more detail.
During a withdrawal
If you submitted a withdrawal before the crash, it should still be in progress. Since 31 October 2021, UK operators haven’t been allowed to let customers cancel a withdrawal request, so a crash can’t put the money back into your balance either. At Coral and Ladbrokes, requests go through internal approval and then take from instantly to five banking days depending on the method, according to their published withdrawal timeframes (opens in a new tab).
If you aren’t sure the request went through, look for it in your transaction history before submitting another. See why a casino app withdrawal is pending for what each status means.
Evidence to collect after a crash
Most crashes sort themselves out once you reopen the app. When they don’t, a few notes made at the time make the difference between a quick fix and a long back-and-forth.
- Write down the time to the minute, the game name and your stake.
- Screenshot your balance as soon as the app reopens, before playing again.
- Reopen the same game to see whether a hand or bonus is waiting.
- Open your game or transaction history and screenshot the round, or note that it’s missing.
- Note your phone model, operating system version and app version from your phone’s settings.
- Keep any error message wording exactly as it appeared.
Reporting a crashed bet to the casino
Start with live chat if the app offers it, as it’s usually quickest, then follow up by email so there’s a written record. Here are the published channels for the partner apps.

Give support everything from your evidence list in one message and ask them to confirm how the round was settled. Our PlayOJO app customer support and Coral app customer support pages go into each brand’s options, and how to contact a casino through the app covers the basics.
If you disagree with how the bet was settled
Disputed settlements are common. In the Commission’s published 2019–20 data, disputed settlement or bet instructions were the largest category of cases at the IBAS dispute service, at 23.4%. There’s a set route for them.
- Make a formal complaint using the operator’s published complaints procedure, not just a chat message.
- Allow up to eight weeks for the operator to resolve it.
- If it’s still unresolved, the operator must offer referral to its alternative dispute resolution (ADR) provider.
- Take the case to that ADR provider, which is free for you, within the deadline; providers must allow at least 12 months from the operator’s final response.
- Accept or reject the ADR outcome; IBAS, for example, has registered operators agree to be bound by its decisions up to £10,000.
Finish the operator’s process first: in that same 2019–20 data, an unfinished operator complaints process was behind 30.8% of the cases IBAS refused. The Commission’s how to complain (opens in a new tab) page sets out the route, and our guides to complaining about a casino app and what ADR means for casino app players explain each step.
Malfunction clauses in casino app terms
Most casino terms include a section on malfunctions or interrupted play. These clauses have to meet consumer law. Licence condition 7.1.1 says gambling terms must be fair and transparent under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, and the Commission has warned against terms that leave the operator to decide outcomes at its own discretion.
A clear clause tells you what happens in common situations, as RTS 10 requires. A vague one that only says the operator may void bets as it sees fit is worth querying. Our explainer on casino app terms and conditions shows where these clauses usually sit.
Stopping the app from crashing again
One crash is bad luck; repeated crashes usually have a fixable cause. The commonest are an out-of-date app, an operating system below the app’s minimum, a full phone, or a corrupted cache.
| Likely cause | Fix | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Old app version | Update from the App Store or Google Play | Updates often fix stability bugs |
| iOS below the minimum | Update iOS, or use the mobile site | Coral and Ladbrokes need iOS 18.0; PlayOJO needs iOS 15.0 |
| Low storage | Free up space | Coral’s iPhone app is 101.6 MB; PlayOJO’s is 25.4 MB |
| Corrupted cached data | Clear the cache or reinstall | Your account and balance are kept by the operator |
| Too many apps open | Close background apps and restart | Frees memory for the game |

After a crash: pause before you play on
A crash at a tense moment can leave you feeling that a win was taken from you, and the urge is to win it back straight away. That’s a good moment to stop instead. The round has been recorded, and checking it calmly is better than raising your stakes to make up for something that may not have happened.
If crashes or near-misses are making play feel stressful, a short break helps. Our guide to taking a time-out in a casino app shows how, and the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133 is free and open 24/7.

Frequently asked questions
Do I lose my bet if the casino app crashes?
Usually not. The round is recorded by the operator, so a bet that was accepted is settled as normal, and an unfinished hand or bonus should be restored when you reopen the game. If your stake was taken but no outcome was generated, the guidance says it should be returned. Check your game history to confirm. Our page on casino app not working covers other faults.
What happens to a winning spin if the app crashes?
The win stands. Once a spin is accepted and its outcome fixed, a crash on your phone doesn’t change it, and the winnings should appear in your balance when you reopen the app. If they don’t, screenshot your balance and game history and contact support with the time and stake. See do casino apps pay out for more on how winnings are paid.
Will my blackjack hand still be there after a crash?
It should be. Blackjack is a multi-stage game, and the Commission’s guidance says operators should restore the last known state, including the cards already dealt, so you can finish the hand. Reopen the same table rather than a different one. Live tables work differently because the dealer carries on. The blackjack app guide explains how RNG and live versions run.
Can I cancel a withdrawal if the app crashed while I was requesting it?
No. UK operators haven’t been allowed to let customers cancel a withdrawal request since 31 October 2021. If the request was submitted before the crash, it continues through the normal approval and payment steps. Check your transaction history to see whether it went through before trying again. Our answer to can I cancel a withdrawal in a casino app explains the rule.
The app crashed while I was paying. Have I been charged twice?
Check before retrying. Open your banking app to see whether the payment completed, is pending, or never started, then check the casino app’s balance and history. Only try again once you know the first attempt failed. If you were charged without the balance updating, contact support with the time and amount. The first deposit in a casino app guide covers how deposits normally appear.
Who decides what happens to my bet after a crash?
The operator applies its published interruption policy, which must follow the Gambling Commission’s standard and not systematically disadvantage players. If you disagree, use the operator’s complaints procedure, then a free ADR provider if it’s unresolved after eight weeks. The Commission sets the rules but doesn’t rule on individual cases. See complaints and ADR rules for the timings.
Does reinstalling the app affect my balance or open bets?
No. Your account, balance and game records are kept by the operator, not stored only in the app, so deleting and reinstalling doesn’t touch them. Take screenshots of anything on screen before you reinstall, in case you need evidence later. Then log back in and check your history. Our guide to deleting a casino app explains what stays and what goes.
Why does my casino app keep crashing during games?
The usual causes are an out-of-date app, an iOS or Android version below the app’s minimum, low storage, or corrupted cached data. Coral’s and Ladbrokes’ iPhone apps need iOS 18.0 or later, for example. Update first, free up space, then clear the cache or reinstall. If crashes continue, report the phone model and app version to support. Our casino app storage space guide helps with full phones.
