Using Monzo with casino apps

Using Monzo with casino apps is straightforward if you pay by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or Pay by Bank, because casinos treat it like any UK bank account. The part that sets Monzo apart is its gambling block, which comes with a cooldown you choose, from 2 days to 1 year, before you can switch it off.

Key takeaways

  • Casino cashiers don't name Monzo; you pay with its card, a phone wallet holding that card, or open banking.
  • Monzo's gambling block stops card payments to merchants coded as gambling, and mis-tagged payments can slip through.
  • When you switch the block on, you choose a cooldown of 2 days to 1 year that must pass before you can turn it off.
  • If you've talked to Monzo support about gambling before, you'll need to message them to remove the block.

Using Monzo with casino apps: the short answer

Monzo works with UK casino apps through standard routes: entering your Monzo card in the cashier, paying with Apple Pay or Google Pay using that card, or approving a Pay by Bank payment. None of our partners lists Monzo by name, because cashiers list payment types rather than banks.

The thing to understand first is Monzo's gambling block. If it's on, gambling card payments are declined, and switching it off takes longer than switching it on by design. The rest of this page covers both sides: how to pay and withdraw, and how the block behaves.

Our casino app payments hub compares every method if you're still deciding how to fund an account.

How Monzo's gambling block works

Monzo's gambling block page (opens in a new tab) says the block automatically stops card payments to merchants using the gambling merchant code. Card payments carry a merchant code, and the block reads the one used for gambling.

When you switch it on, Monzo asks you to pick a cooldown, anywhere from 2 days to 1 year. To switch it off again, you have to wait until that cooldown has passed. The longer you choose, the more protection you build in for difficult moments.

  1. Open the Monzo app and look for the gambling block option; Monzo's help pages show where it currently sits.
  2. Switch it on and choose a cooldown between 2 days and 1 year.
  3. Card payments to merchants tagged as gambling are now blocked.
  4. To remove it, wait for the cooldown to end, then switch it off. If you've spoken to Monzo support about gambling before, you'll need to message them instead.

The Gambling Commission's list of bank blocks, last updated 16 October 2026, says turning Monzo's block off means contacting support. Monzo's own page says that applies only to people who have discussed gambling with support; everyone else waits out their chosen cooldown. Monzo's page is the more detailed source.

Monzo's gambling block then and now

Monzo has offered the block since 2018. Its announcement of the gambling block (opens in a new tab) was published on 19 June 2018, and the way you turn it off has changed since.

The longer, chosen cooldown gives more control to people who want a firm break, while the support step keeps an extra check for anyone who has already flagged a problem.

What Monzo's gambling block can miss

Monzo says mis-tagged transactions can get past the block. If a gambling business uses a different merchant code, the block has nothing to read. That's a limit of every code-based bank block, not just Monzo's.

Monzo describes the block in terms of card payments. Other banks are explicit that transfers aren't covered: Revolut's block doesn't affect bank transfers, and Lloyds' freeze doesn't cover direct debits or bank transfers. If you're relying on Monzo's block, ask Monzo directly whether open banking payments such as Pay by Bank are included.

For layered protection, add GAMSTOP and a phone-level blocker. Our guides to blocking gambling apps on iPhone and on Android cover Screen Time, Digital Wellbeing and Gamban.

Paying into a casino app from your Monzo account

With the block off, these are the routes our partners publish that a Monzo customer can use.

Deposit routes and published limits at partner apps
RoutePublished atPublished minimum or cap
Debit cardAll five partners (10bet's list via a third-party review)Casumo: £10 minimum for all methods; Coral and Ladbrokes: £2,000 cap per deposit

Google PayCoral and Ladbrokes£5 minimum
Pay by BankCoral and Ladbrokes (TrueLayer); Trustly at Casumo and PlayOJO£5 minimum at Coral and Ladbrokes

Coral and Ladbrokes also limit UK customers to three active payment methods in any rolling 30 days, so adding a Monzo card, a Monzo-linked Apple Pay and Pay by Bank could use all three. Our Apple Pay casino apps and Pay by Bank casino apps pages cover each route in depth.

Before your first casino deposit from Monzo

A few checks save time and avoid declined payments.

  1. Check whether your Monzo gambling block is on. If it is, and you set it for a reason, that reason probably still stands.
  2. Make sure the name on your Monzo account matches your casino account exactly.
  3. Set a deposit limit in the casino app when it prompts you; UK apps must ask before your first deposit.
  4. Decide on a route and stick with it, since withdrawals usually return to the deposit method.
  5. Upload any identity documents the app asks for before you need to withdraw.

Still being declined? The payment declined guide has the remaining causes, and your first deposit in a casino app covers the full sequence.

Withdrawing casino winnings to Monzo

Monzo's gambling block concerns payments out of your account, and Monzo's page doesn't say it stops money coming in. Withdrawals follow each casino's closed-loop rules, so card deposits are normally paid back to the card and bank payouts land in your Monzo account.

All of these start after the operator approves the request. Casumo charges £3 on withdrawals under £10, and Coral and Ladbrokes charge nothing. See how long casino app withdrawals take and our bank transfer withdrawals page for more.

Monzo's gambling block compared with other banks

Most UK banks now offer something similar, but the delay before you can lift a block varies a lot.

Delay before a bank gambling block can be lifted
BankDelay to switch offCovers
MonzoYour chosen cooldown, 2 days to 1 yearCard payments to gambling merchants
Starling48 hoursCard payments to most gambling merchants, set per card
Lloyds48 hoursPayments to gambling merchants, not direct debits or transfers
HSBCDeclines continue for 3 daysDebit card payments, including digital wallets and its Pay by Bank app
RevolutUp to 48 hoursCard payments; not transfers or third-party apps
BarclaysNo delay statedDebit card payments to gambling merchants

Of the banks in this table, Monzo's is the only block where you set the delay yourself, up to a full year. The Commission's list of bank gambling blocks (opens in a new tab) links to each bank's page, and our pages on using Revolut and using Starling with casino apps cover those banks.

Monzo deposits and casino app bonuses

A Monzo debit card payment is a card payment, so it avoids the e-wallet and prepaid exclusions in most offers. Read the payment clause anyway: Coral's offer excludes certain debit cards, Casumo says payment restrictions apply, and 10bet excludes Skrill and Neteller.

Our page on payment methods excluded from bonuses lists the patterns, and how wagering works in casino apps explains the 10x cap that applies to UK bonuses since 19 January 2026.

If you're using Monzo's block to cut back

Setting a block is a positive step, and choosing a longer cooldown is a sensible way to protect yourself on harder days. If you find yourself looking for ways around it, that's a sign to talk to someone.

The National Gambling Helpline, run by GamCare, is free and open 24/7 on 0808 8020 133. NHS gambling clinics take self-referrals, and GAMSTOP lets you exclude from all GB-licensed online gambling for 6 months, 1 year or 5 years. Our help and support page brings these together.

Casino apps for Monzo card users, and their offers

Casumo, 10bet and PlayOJO publish debit card deposits, and all three name Apple Pay on their own pages or, for 10bet, a third-party review. That's why they're listed here for Monzo users.

New Casumo customers (18+) who opt in can get half their first deposit again as a bonus, up to £100, on deposits from £20. Wagering is 10x the bonus within 7 days, with a £5 cap on each bet, and game, play and payment restrictions apply. Deposit £100 and the £50 bonus needs £500 of play to clear, and losses over that much play are likely.

At 10bet, new UK customers (18+) choose the casino welcome bonus during sign-up, then have 7 days to make a first deposit, which is matched 100% up to £25. Clear it by wagering 10x on slots within 3 days; bonus winnings top out at £1,000, and deposits made with Skrill or Neteller are excluded.

PlayOJO (18+, new UK customers outside Northern Ireland): a first deposit of £10 or more brings 80 spins at 10p on Big Bass Bonanza with no wagering attached, so any winnings are cash. You need the designated offer link, and it doesn't combine with other promotions. Terms apply to all three.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use my Monzo card on casino apps?

Yes, if your gambling block is off and the app accepts debit cards, which all our partners do. You can also add the card to Apple Pay or Google Pay and pay that way. Remember that credit card gambling has been banned in Great Britain since April 2020. Our Visa debit casino apps page and Mastercard casino apps page explain card payments in more detail.

How do I turn off Monzo's gambling block?

You wait until the cooldown you picked when switching it on has passed, then turn it off in the app. The cooldown can be anything from 2 days to 1 year. If you've previously spoken to Monzo support about gambling, you'll need to message them instead. How other banks handle it is covered in banking app gambling blocks.

Does Monzo block gambling automatically?

Only once you switch the block on. After that, it automatically declines card payments to merchants using the gambling merchant code. Monzo notes that mis-tagged transactions can get through, so it isn't a complete barrier. For broader cover, see our answer to how do I block gambling apps on my phone.

Why was my Monzo payment to a casino app declined?

The gambling block is the usual reason. Other causes include a name mismatch between accounts, a casino deposit limit you've reached, or Coral and Ladbrokes' limit of three active payment methods per rolling 30 days. Our answer to why was my deposit declined works through each one.

Can I withdraw casino winnings to Monzo?

Yes. Card deposits are normally paid back to the same card, and bank payouts can go to your Monzo account. Published times run from a few hours for eligible Visa Fast Funds payouts at Coral and Ladbrokes to up to 5 days for Casumo bank withdrawals, after approval. See the fastest withdrawal methods for every option.

Does Monzo's block stop Pay by Bank casino deposits?

Monzo describes its block as stopping card payments, and its page doesn't say whether open banking payments are covered. Other banks, such as Revolut and Lloyds, say their blocks don't cover transfers. Ask Monzo directly if you rely on the block. Our open banking casino payments page explains how Pay by Bank works.

Is Monzo on the Gambling Commission's list of banks with blocks?

Yes. The Commission's list, last updated 16 October 2026, includes Monzo alongside Bank of Scotland, Barclays, Halifax, HSBC, Lloyds, NatWest, RBS, Santander and Starling. Its description of turning the block off differs slightly from Monzo's current page, which is more detailed. Our bank gambling blocks guide covers every listed bank.

What cooldown should I choose on Monzo's gambling block?

There's no right answer, but a longer cooldown gives stronger protection when an urge hits. Monzo lets you pick anything from 2 days to 1 year. If you're blocking because gambling feels out of control, a longer period plus GAMSTOP is a firmer combination. Our time-outs guide explains shorter breaks inside casino apps.
