Debit card casino deposits on mobile

Debit card casino deposits on mobile are the standard way to fund a UK casino app, because every one of our partners takes Visa or Mastercard debit cards and credit cards are banned for gambling. You type or save the card once, confirm with your bank if asked, and the money lands in your balance. Here's how it works, what can block it and how to stay in control.

Key takeaways

  • All five partner casino apps accept debit cards, which also qualify for more welcome offers than e-wallets.
  • UK law treats a debit card payment as one that isn't a credit-token; credit cards have been banned since 14 April 2020.
  • Many UK banks offer a gambling block on debit cards, but each works differently and some have a delay to switch off.
  • Coral and Ladbrokes allow three active payment methods per rolling 30 days, and PlayOJO up to two unverified cards.

Why debit cards are the default for UK casino apps

Debit cards are accepted by every one of our partner casino apps and are rarely excluded from welcome offers. That combination makes them the starting point in our casino app payment methods hub and for most players, even those who later add a wallet like Apple Pay or Google Pay, which simply pass the payment on to a card.

There's a legal reason too. Section 81 of the Gambling Act 2005 defines a debit card payment as one taken from a bank account using a card that isn't a credit-token under the Consumer Credit Act 1974. You can read the wording on legislation.gov.uk's copy of section 81 (opens in a new tab). Credit cards sit on the other side of that line, and the Gambling Commission banned them for gambling from 14 April 2020 under licence condition 6.1.2 (opens in a new tab).

How debit card casino deposits on mobile work

A phone deposit by debit card follows the same path as any online card payment. The casino's cashier sends the payment to your card issuer, your bank may ask you to confirm it in its own app, and the funds appear in your casino balance. Most cashiers offer to save the card for next time.

  1. Sign in to the casino app with an account that has passed age and identity checks.
  2. Set a deposit limit when prompted; UK operators must ask before your first deposit.
  3. Open the deposit area and choose debit card, or pick a card you've saved before.
  4. Enter the card number, expiry date and security code if it's a new card; the name must match your account.
  5. Enter the amount, staying within the cashier's minimum and maximum.
  6. Approve the payment in your banking app if your bank asks, then check your casino balance.

The name check matters: casinos expect payments from cards in your own name. Our guide to your first deposit in a casino app covers the limit prompt and other first-time steps, and how casino apps verify your identity explains the checks that come before it.

Debit card rules at each partner casino app

Each operator publishes slightly different card rules. The table brings together what their help pages and terms say about debit cards specifically.

Debit card rules at our partner casino apps
Casino appCards namedDeposit limits publishedCard-specific rules
CoralVisa, Mastercard, MaestroMax £2,000 per deposit; minimum shown in cashierThree active methods per rolling 30 days
LadbrokesVisa, Mastercard, MaestroMax £2,000 per deposit; minimum shown in cashierThree active methods per rolling 30 days
CasumoVisa, MastercardMinimum £10Card withdrawals up to 2 days
PlayOJODebit cardsNot publishedUp to two non-verified cards at a time
10betDebit cardsNot publishedCard withdrawals up to 2 business days

The two Entain brands share an operator, LC International Limited, so their limits match; see the Coral payments page for that cashier in full. PlayOJO's two-card limit is covered on the PlayOJO payments page.

Visa Debit, Mastercard Debit and the end of Maestro

Major UK banks began replacing Maestro with Visa Debit or Debit Mastercard from 2009, and Adyen, a payments company, says Mastercard stopped issuing Maestro in Europe from 1 July 2023, with existing cards working until 2027 at the latest.

Maestro still appears in the Coral and Ladbrokes method lists, but if your card carries that logo, check its expiry and whether your bank has sent a replacement. For card-brand detail, see our pages on Visa debit casino apps and Mastercard casino apps.

Why a debit card casino deposit gets declined

A declined deposit is usually a rule doing its job rather than a fault. Work through the causes in this order before contacting support.

Common reasons a card deposit fails
CauseWhat to check
It's a credit cardUse a debit card; credit cards are banned for UK gambling
Bank gambling blockYour banking app's card or spending controls
Deposit limit reachedYour limit settings in the casino app
Too many methodsCoral and Ladbrokes allow three active methods per 30 days
Unverified cardPlayOJO allows up to two non-verified cards at a time
Name mismatchThe card must be in the account holder's name

Our payment declined guide goes into each cause, and why was my deposit declined answers the question briefly.

Debit card casino deposits on mobile and bank gambling blocks

Debit cards are where bank gambling blocks work best, because they spot gambling merchant codes on card payments. The Gambling Commission's list of banks with gambling blocks (opens in a new tab) names Bank of Scotland, Barclays, Halifax, HSBC, Lloyds, Monzo, NatWest, RBS, Santander and Starling. Here's how some of them describe their tools.

How selected UK bank gambling blocks work
BankWhat it blocksSwitching off
BarclaysDebit card payments to gambling merchants, via merchant controlNo delay stated
HSBCDebit card gambling payments, including digital walletsPayments still declined for 3 days
LloydsPayments to gambling merchants (not direct debits or transfers)Removed after 48 hours
StarlingCard payments to most gambling merchants, set per card48-hour delay
MonzoCard payments with the gambling merchant codeWait out a cooldown you choose, 2 days to 1 year
RevolutCard payments identified as gamblingUp to 48 hours

None of these blocks is perfect. Monzo says mis-tagged payments can slip through, and Lloyds' freeze doesn't cover bank transfers. Halifax and Lloyds also give access to Gamban licences, according to the Commission's list. The guide to gambling blocks on banking apps and the Monzo casino payments page go further.

Getting money back to your debit card

Withdrawals usually return to the card you paid in with. Published times after approval are: Casumo up to 2 days, 10bet up to 2 business days, and Coral and Ladbrokes from instantly to five banking days depending on method, with their Visa Fast Funds route typically arriving within hours. PlayOJO says it processes most payments within a few hours.

The Visa debit page explains the Fast Funds route in detail, and how long casino app withdrawals take compares every method.

Keeping debit card deposits within budget

Because a debit card draws on your current account, every deposit is money you already have, which is part of why it's the safer choice compared with credit. It also means overspending hits bills directly. Treat each deposit as the cost of an evening's entertainment.

A simple sum helps. On a slot with a 96% RTP, the 4% house edge means £200 of total stakes, say 400 spins at 50p, has an expected cost of £8. That's an average; a session can lose far more. UK rules add guard rails: a prompt to set a limit before the first deposit, and checks when net deposits pass £150 in 30 days. Use a deposit limit and, if you want a fuller break, GAMSTOP self-exclusion.

Casino apps that take debit cards, with a welcome offer

All three of these apps accept debit cards, and a debit card is the method least likely to be excluded from their offers. Coral does exclude certain debit cards without naming them, so check the terms. All are 18+ and terms apply.

  • Coral: 18+, new players, offer runs 1 October 2026 to 1 February 2027. Deposit and bet £10 or more on slots to get 100 free spins on selected games, worth 10p each; accept within 48 hours and use within 7 days. No wagering on free spin winnings. Excluded: Neteller, PayPal, Paysafe, Skrill, prepaid cards and certain debit cards.
  • Ladbrokes: 18+, new customers. Deposit and spend £10 or more on slots for 50 free spins a day over your first 10 days, up to 500, at 10p each on selected games. Claim before 23:59 each day; valid for 7 days; no wagering. Excluded deposit types: prepaid cards, PayPal, Paysafe, Neteller, Skrill and Moneybookers.
  • PlayOJO: 18+, new UK customers excluding Northern Ireland. First deposit of £10 or more gets 80 free spins on Big Bass Bonanza at 10p each, with no wagering, so winnings are paid in cash. Can't be combined with other offers; available only through the designated offer link.

These are slot offers; table and live games don't count towards them. With one operator behind Coral and Ladbrokes, holding new accounts at both may not be possible. Gambling is entertainment that costs money, and losses are likely over time.

Debit cards are the method most likely to qualify for these offers, but Coral excludes certain debit cards, so check its terms. 18+, terms apply.

Coral and Ladbrokes are both run by LC International Limited (Entain). If you already hold an account with one Entain brand, you may not be able to open another; check the terms first.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a debit card on any UK casino app?

Yes, debit cards are accepted at all five of our partner apps and at most UK-licensed casinos. Coral and Ladbrokes name Visa, Mastercard and Maestro; Casumo names Visa and Mastercard; PlayOJO and 10bet say debit cards. The card must be in your name and your account must be verified first. Our debit card casino apps ranking compares the partners for card users.

What is the minimum debit card deposit on a casino app?

It varies by operator. Casumo's minimum is £10 for every method, while Coral and Ladbrokes show the minimum in the cashier rather than publishing one general figure. PlayOJO and 10bet don't publish a debit card minimum. Welcome offers may need more: Casumo's needs £20. Check the cashier before you deposit. Our page on the minimum deposit on casino apps collects the figures.

Is a debit card deposit on my phone safe?

Card payments in a licensed casino app use the same bank security as other online shopping, and many banks ask you to approve the payment in their app. Install the casino app only from the App Store, Google Play or the operator, and check the licence on the Commission's register. Our guide on how to spot an unlicensed casino app lists the warning signs.

Why does my bank keep declining casino payments?

Often because a gambling block is switched on, either by you or by default for credit cards. HSBC, for instance, blocks credit card gambling payments automatically. Other causes are a deposit limit you've reached, too many payment methods in 30 days at Coral or Ladbrokes, or a security check. Our casino app payment declined guide walks through each possibility in turn.

How do I block gambling on my debit card?

Most big UK banks let you do it in their app. Barclays uses merchant control, Lloyds a gambling freeze, Starling a per-card block, and Monzo a block with a cooldown you choose. HSBC's restriction also covers digital wallets. The Gambling Commission keeps a list of banks that offer blocks. Our guide to gambling blocks on banking apps explains each option.

Can I deposit with someone else's debit card?

No, casinos expect payment methods in the account holder's own name, and a card in someone else's name is likely to be refused or to trigger checks. UK rules also require your age and identity to be verified before you can deposit. If you share a phone or account with a partner, keep separate accounts. Our guide to sharing a phone and casino apps covers this.

Do debit card deposits count for welcome bonuses?

Usually, yes. Debit cards are the method least often excluded. Ladbrokes, 10bet and PlayOJO don't exclude debit cards in their partner terms, and Casumo says payment restrictions apply. Coral excludes certain debit cards without naming them, so check its terms. Bonuses carry conditions, and the house edge still applies while you play. See payment methods excluded from bonuses for detail.

Can I still use a Maestro card in a casino app?

Possibly, if your card is still valid. Coral and Ladbrokes still list Maestro. Adyen, a payments company, says Mastercard stopped issuing Maestro in Europe from 1 July 2023 and that existing cards will work until 2027 at the latest. Many UK banks switched to Visa Debit or Debit Mastercard from 2009. See our Mastercard casino apps page for the replacement card.
