Three Card Poker on mobile
Three Card Poker on mobile is one of the quickest table games to learn: you see three cards, then either fold or match your Ante with a Play bet. With the most common pay table the main game carries a 3.37% house edge, the optional Pairplus bet costs more than twice that, and one simple rule tells you when to play.
Key takeaways
- Each hand needs one decision: fold and lose the Ante, or add a Play bet equal to the Ante.
- Play any hand of Queen-6-4 or better and fold the rest; that gives the lowest house edge, 3.37%.
- Pairplus is a separate bet on your own three cards with a 7.28% house edge on the common table.
- At £5 a hand, the main game costs about 17p per hand on average; adding £5 Pairplus lifts that to about 53p.
- UK rules require at least 5 seconds per hand and ban autoplay on all online casino games.

Three Card Poker on mobile: the short answer
Three Card Poker is a house-banked card game: you play against the dealer, not other players, and every hand is settled by a fixed pay table. On a phone it fits neatly into a portrait or landscape screen because there are only three cards per side and at most three betting spots. It sits alongside Casino Hold'em and other casino poker variants in the mobile casino games hub.
The game is really two games sharing a deal. The Ante and Play game asks you to beat the dealer. The Pairplus bet ignores the dealer completely and pays if your own three cards make a pair or better. You can play either one or both, and the cost of each is very different.
Like every casino game, it has a built-in house edge, so losses are the likely outcome over time. The aim of this page is to show you what each bet costs in pounds, how the game runs in a UK app and which choices keep the cost lowest.
How a hand of Three Card Poker plays on your phone
The flow is the same whether you play an RNG version or a live table streamed to your app. Button names vary between game studios, so look for the bet spots and the fold and play options described in the game's help screen.
- Choose a chip value and place an Ante, a Pairplus bet, or both.
- Start the hand. You get three cards face up and the dealer gets three cards face down.
- If you only bet Pairplus, it settles straight away on your three cards.
- If you bet an Ante, decide: fold and lose the Ante, or place a Play bet equal to the Ante.
- The dealer's cards are revealed and checked against the queen-high qualifying rule.
- Ante, Play and any Ante Bonus are settled, and the result is added to your balance.
That single fold-or-play decision is the only skill element. Everything else is the shuffle, which is why a clear rule for that decision matters so much (see the strategy section below).
Hand rankings in Three Card Poker and how often each lands
With only three cards the usual poker order changes: a straight beats a flush, because there are fewer ways to make one. You don't need to take that on trust. A 52-card deck gives 22,100 possible three-card hands, and counting each hand type shows the order clearly.
| Hand | Ways to make it | Share of all hands |
|---|---|---|
| Straight flush | 48 | 0.22% |
| Three of a kind | 52 | 0.24% |
| Straight | 720 | 3.26% |
| Flush | 1,096 | 4.96% |
| Pair | 3,744 | 16.94% |
| High card | 16,440 | 74.39% |
| Total | 22,100 | 100% |
The counts come from simple arithmetic. There are 12 possible runs (A-2-3 up to Q-K-A) in each of four suits, giving 48 straight flushes. Each run can be made 64 ways across the suits, so 768 minus those 48 gives 720 plain straights. Each suit has 286 three-card groups, so 1,144 flushes minus the 48 straight flushes leaves 1,096.
Notice that roughly three hands in four are high-card hands. That is why folding is a normal, frequent part of the game rather than a sign that you're playing badly.
Ante and Play bets: dealer qualifying and payouts
Once you place a Play bet, the dealer's hand is compared with yours. The key rule is qualification: the dealer needs queen high or better to qualify. If the dealer doesn't qualify, your Ante pays even money and your Play bet is returned as a push, whatever you hold.
| What happens | Ante | Play |
|---|---|---|
| You fold | Lost | No Play bet made |
| Dealer doesn't qualify | Pays 1 to 1 | Push (returned) |
| Dealer qualifies, you win | Pays 1 to 1 | Pays 1 to 1 |
| Dealer qualifies, dealer wins | Lost | Lost |
The Ante Bonus
On top of that, most games pay an Ante Bonus on strong hands even if the dealer beats you. The most common version pays 5 to 1 for a straight flush, 4 to 1 for three of a kind and 1 to 1 for a straight. It's paid on your Ante, so it only applies if you made the Play bet rather than folding.
The Q-6-4 rule: the best strategy for Three Card Poker on mobile
Optimal strategy fits on a sticky note: play Queen-6-4 or better and fold anything lower. So Q-6-5 and Q-7-2 are plays, while Q-6-3 and J-10-9 are folds. Any pair or better is always a play.
This doesn't beat the game. It only reduces the house edge to its lowest point. Wizard of Odds' Three Card Poker analysis (opens in a new tab) compares the Q-6-4 rule with two shortcuts that many players fall into:
| Strategy | House edge | Average cost per £10 Ante |
|---|---|---|
| Play Q-6-4 or better | 3.37% | 34p |
| Mimic the dealer (play any queen high or better) | 3.45% | 35p |
| Play every hand | 7.65% | 77p |
Mimicking the dealer costs only a little more, but never folding more than doubles the edge. The cost column is simply the Ante multiplied by the house edge, rounded to the nearest penny.
Wizard of Odds also quotes an element of risk of 2.01% for Ante and Play. That figure divides the average loss by everything you put on the table, including Play bets, so it looks smaller than the house edge even though the money lost is the same.
Pairplus: is the side bet worth it?
Pairplus is a side bet on your own three cards. It doesn't care what the dealer holds or whether you fold your Ante. The most common pay table pays 40 to 1 for a straight flush, 30 to 1 for three of a kind, 6 to 1 for a straight, 3 to 1 for a flush and 1 to 1 for a pair.
You can check the 7.28% house edge yourself using the counts above. Multiply each payout by its number of hands: 1,920 + 1,560 + 4,320 + 3,288 + 3,744 = 14,832 units won. Subtract the 16,440 losing high-card hands and you get −1,608 across 22,100 hands, which is −7.28% per bet.
So Pairplus costs more than twice as much as the main game for each pound staked. Some players like it because a pair or better lands about one hand in four, but that doesn't change the price. If you're keeping costs down, leave it out or keep it smaller than your Ante.
What Three Card Poker costs per hand and per session
Expected loss is the stake multiplied by the house edge. It is an average: a single session can go well above or below it, but over many hands results drift towards it. The session figures below assume 50 hands, which is an illustration rather than a measured pace.
| Bet and stake | House edge | Per hand | Per 50 hands |
|---|---|---|---|
| £1 Ante, Q-6-4 strategy | 3.37% | 3.4p | £1.69 |
| £5 Ante, Q-6-4 strategy | 3.37% | 16.9p | £8.43 |
| £5 Ante, playing every hand | 7.65% | 38.3p | £19.13 |
| £5 Pairplus only | 7.28% | 36.4p | £18.20 |
| £5 Ante (Q-6-4) plus £5 Pairplus | Mixed | 53.3p | £26.63 |
Two things stand out. Playing every hand at £5 costs more than double the Q-6-4 player at the same stake. And adding Pairplus at the same size as your Ante triples the average cost per hand. A budget of £20 lasts far longer on Ante alone at £1 than on £5 Ante plus Pairplus.

Playing Three Card Poker on a small screen
With only three cards per side, this is one of the easier table games to read on a phone, but a few habits help:
- Turn the phone if the layout feels cramped. Many table games support both orientations; our guide to portrait and landscape mode explains the trade-offs.
- Check the chip value before each hand. It's easy to tap a larger chip by mistake when the bet spots sit close together.
- Keep Pairplus deliberate. If the game remembers your last bets, make sure a Pairplus chip isn't being repeated when you only meant to play Ante.
- Use a steady connection. If your signal drops mid-hand, the outcome is still decided by the game server; our guide on what happens if your app crashes covers how unfinished rounds are handled.
If you want to learn the fold-or-play rhythm without spending, many apps offer a demo mode, although UK rules mean you must be age-verified first.
UK rules that shape Three Card Poker in apps
In a UK app, the game is covered by the Gambling Commission's technical standards. Its RTS 14 responsible product design rules (opens in a new tab) apply to house-banked casino games as well as slots.
| Rule | What it means for you | Since |
|---|---|---|
| 5-second minimum (RTS 14G) | Each hand must take at least 5 seconds; house-played poker such as Three Card Poker is named | 17 January 2025 |
| No autoplay | Every hand must be started by you | 17 January 2025 for all online casino games |
| One game at a time (RTS 14C) | No playing several tables at once | 17 January 2025 for casino games |
| Net position and time on screen | Your session spend and elapsed time must be shown | 17 January 2025 for casino games |
| No credit cards | Deposits must not come from credit cards, including via credit-funded e-wallets | 14 April 2020 |
| Age and identity checks | Verified before you can deposit or play, including demo games | 7 May 2019 |
The £5 and £2 stake limits do not apply here: they cover online slots only. Results must also come from a fair random process that the operator can't tweak towards a target return, under RTS 7 (opens in a new tab). Our pages on game speed rules and the autoplay ban go into the detail.
Choosing a UK app for Three Card Poker
Our partners don't publish a list of their table games, so we can't promise any one app carries Three Card Poker. The practical approach is to check the app's game lobby, often under table games or casino poker, before you deposit. Our best casino poker apps list compares the options in more depth.
| App | Type of app | Requires | Size |
|---|---|---|---|
| Casumo Casino & Sports Betting | Combined casino and sportsbook | iOS 15.0 or later | 52.5 MB |
| 10bet: Sports Betting & Casino | Sportsbook app with a casino | iOS 16.0 or later | 112.3 MB |
| Coral Casino: Slots & Games | Standalone casino app | iOS 18.0 or later | 101.6 MB |
The Casumo app needs the oldest iOS of the three and is the smallest download. The 10bet app wraps its casino inside a sportsbook, which suits people who bet on sport too. The Coral Casino app is casino-only, and its listing names blackjack, roulette and live casino among its games. Whichever you choose, set a deposit limit before you play; our deposit limits guide shows how.

Frequently asked questions
How do you play Three Card Poker on a phone?
You place an Ante, a Pairplus bet or both, then see three cards. If you bet an Ante, you either fold and lose it or add a Play bet of the same size. The dealer then needs queen high or better to qualify, and bets settle by the pay table. The steps are identical on a phone and a computer; only the layout changes. Our mobile casino games guide covers similar table games.
What is the best strategy for Three Card Poker?
Play any hand of Queen-6-4 or better and fold everything lower. That rule gives a house edge of 3.37% on the common Ante Bonus table, compared with 3.45% if you copy the dealer and 7.65% if you never fold. It lowers the cost of playing but doesn't remove the house edge, so losses remain likely over time. See how it compares with Casino Hold'em strategy.
What is the house edge in Three Card Poker?
The Ante and Play game has a 3.37% house edge with the most common Ante Bonus table and the Q-6-4 strategy. Pairplus is higher at 7.28% on its common pay table. In pounds, a £5 Ante costs about 17p per hand on average, while a £5 Pairplus bet costs about 36p. Pay tables vary between versions, so check the game's help screen. Our house edge by game page puts these figures in context.
Is the Pairplus bet worth playing?
Pairplus costs more than the main game, with a 7.28% house edge on the common pay table against 3.37% for Ante and Play. It pays on any pair or better, which lands about one hand in four, so it feels busy, but you lose more per pound staked on average. If you play it, keep it small and inside your budget. Our side bet glossary entry explains why side bets usually cost more.
What happens if the dealer doesn't qualify?
If the dealer doesn't hold queen high or better, your Ante pays even money and your Play bet is returned as a push. This happens whatever your own hand is, provided you didn't fold. Any Ante Bonus you've earned for a straight or better is still paid, because it doesn't depend on the dealer. Our glossary page on paytables explains how these payouts are listed in the game.
Can I use a casino welcome bonus on Three Card Poker?
Usually not in full. Welcome offers on UK apps are mostly aimed at slots, and table games such as Three Card Poker are often excluded or count for less towards wagering. 10bet's bonus, for example, must be wagered on slots. Read the terms before playing with bonus money, because breaking a game restriction can void the bonus. Our guide to reading bonus terms shows where to look.
Why does each Three Card Poker hand take at least 5 seconds?
UK rules introduced on 17 January 2025 require casino games other than slots to take at least 5 seconds per game cycle, and house-played poker such as Three Card Poker is included. The same changes banned autoplay on all online casino games and stopped people playing several games at once. The aim is to slow play and make spending easier to track. Read more on our game speed rules page.
Is Three Card Poker rigged on casino apps?
No, not at a UK-licensed app. The Gambling Commission's technical standards require random outcomes that operators can't adjust to hit a target return, and the rules, payouts and odds must be available before you play. The house makes its money from the pay table, not by changing the cards. Check the operator's licence on the Commission's register if you're unsure. Our answer on whether casino apps rig games explains more.
