Roulette app guide
This roulette app guide covers everything that changes your odds when you play real-money roulette on a phone: the type of wheel, the bets, the multiplier games and the pace of play. The headline is simple. Choose a single-zero wheel, because it halves the house edge of the double-zero version, and treat every spin as paid entertainment.
Key takeaways
- European (single-zero) roulette has a 2.70% house edge; American (double-zero) has 5.26%.
- Every standard bet on the same wheel carries the same edge, so no bet is ‘safer’ in maths terms.
- French La Partage rules cut the edge on even-money bets to about 1.35%.
- Lightning-style games lower the normal straight-up payout to fund their multipliers.
- No betting system changes the house edge, whatever pattern it uses.
- European wheel
- 37 pockets, 2.70% edge
- American wheel
- 38 pockets, 5.26% edge
- French even-money bets
- About 1.35% with La Partage
- Straight-up payout
- 35 to 1 (29 to 1 in Lightning Roulette)
- UK minimum game cycle
- 5 seconds
- Slot stake limits apply?
- No, slots only
How roulette works in a casino app
Roulette in a casino app is the same game as on a casino floor. You place chips on a betting layout, the wheel spins, and the pocket the ball lands in decides which bets win. Apps add two choices the casino floor doesn’t: animated RNG wheels and live streamed wheels, both covered in this guide and across our mobile casino games hub.
Payouts are quoted ‘to 1’, which means you get your winnings plus your stake back. A £1 straight-up bet on a single number that wins at 35 to 1 returns £36 in total: £35 of winnings and your £1 stake.
The casino’s advantage comes from the zero. Every bet is paid as if the wheel had only the numbers 1 to 36, but the zero pocket, or two zero pockets on an American wheel, means the true odds are always slightly longer than the payout.
European, American and other roulette wheels in apps
The wheel is the biggest single choice you make in a roulette app. The rest of the game hardly matters by comparison.
| Wheel | Pockets | House edge | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| European (single zero) | 37 (0–36) | 2.70% on every bet | The standard choice for UK players |
| French (single zero) | 37 (0–36) | 1.35% on even-money bets with La Partage; 2.70% on others | Half your even-money stake comes back on zero |
| American (double zero) | 38 (0, 00, 1–36) | 5.26%; 7.89% on the five-number bet | Same payouts, one extra losing pocket |
| Mini roulette (Playtech) | 13 (0–12) | 3.85% to 7.69% (Wizard of Odds), depending on the bet and rules | Smaller wheel with smaller payouts |
| Triple zero | 39 | 7.69% on every bet | Avoid if you see it |
These figures come from Wizard of Odds’ roulette basics (opens in a new tab). The difference between 2.70% and 5.26% is not small: for the same stakes, an American wheel costs you almost twice as much over time. Our European roulette on mobile page goes deeper into the single-zero game.
Roulette app bets, payouts and odds
Roulette bets split into inside bets on individual numbers or small groups, and outside bets on large groups such as red or black. Single-zero and double-zero wheels use the same payouts; only the chance of winning changes.
| Bet | Numbers covered | Payout | Chance (single zero) | Chance (double zero) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Straight up | 1 | 35 to 1 | 2.70% | 2.63% |
| Split | 2 | 17 to 1 | 5.41% | 5.26% |
| Street | 3 | 11 to 1 | 8.11% | 7.89% |
| Corner | 4 | 8 to 1 | 10.81% | 10.53% |
| Six line | 6 | 5 to 1 | 16.22% | 15.79% |
| Dozen | 12 | 2 to 1 | 32.43% | 31.58% |
| Red/black, odd/even, 1–18/19–36 | 18 | 1 to 1 | 48.65% | 47.37% |
A column covers 12 numbers, like a dozen, so it has the same chance of winning. Lower-risk bets win more often but pay less; higher-risk bets pay more but rarely land. The edge is the same 2.70% on all of them on a single-zero wheel, so the choice is about how you want your money to swing, not about better value.
Our guide to roulette bets on a phone screen shows how each one is placed on a mobile layout, including racetrack call bets.
What a roulette app session costs per hour
Expected loss = stake × house edge × spins. Speed matters as much as the wheel. Evolution describes its Auto Roulette as capable of 60 to 80 games an hour, and its Speed Roulette rounds take 25 seconds, which works out at up to 144 spins an hour if you bet on every one.
| Stake per spin | European wheel (2.70%) | American wheel (5.26%) |
|---|---|---|
| 10p | 22p | 42p |
| £1 | £2.16 | £4.21 |
| £5 | £10.80 | £21.04 |
| £10 | £21.60 | £42.08 |
At 144 spins an hour on a speed table, £1 a spin on a single-zero wheel averages £3.89 an hour, against £2.16 at 80 spins. The game is the same; you are simply staking more often. These are long-run averages, so a session can go either way, but over time losses are the likely outcome. Our speed games guide looks at faster formats.
RNG roulette vs live roulette on your phone
An RNG roulette game uses a random number generator to pick the winning pocket and shows an animated wheel. Under Gambling Commission standard RTS 7, results must be acceptably random and compensated games, which adjust results to hit a target return, are not permitted. The standard is set out in RTS 7 on the generation of random outcomes (opens in a new tab).
| Type | How the result is made | Pace | Data use |
|---|---|---|---|
| RNG roulette | Random number generator with an animated wheel | You spin when ready, within the 5-second minimum | Light |
| Live roulette | A dealer spins a real ball on a real wheel, streamed live | Set by the dealer and betting timer | Heavy (video) |
| Auto roulette | An automated wheel with no dealer, streamed live | 60–80 games an hour (Evolution) | Heavy (video) |
A single-zero wheel has the same 2.70% maths in all three formats. Live and auto wheels add the look of a real table; RNG adds control over pace. Read more in our guides to live roulette on mobile and RNG games.
Lightning Roulette and other multiplier roulette apps
Multiplier games add random boosted payouts to straight-up bets. They are among the most popular live games in UK apps, but the boost is paid for by lowering the usual payout.
| Game | Provider | Twist | Published figures |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lightning Roulette | Evolution | 1–5 Lucky Numbers per round with 50x–500x multipliers; unboosted straight-ups pay 29 to 1 | RTP 97.10%–97.30% (UK operator game pages) |
| XXXtreme Lightning Roulette | Evolution | Chain Lightning adds up to 9 more spots; Double Strikes raise multipliers to 600x–2,000x | Max multiplier 2,000x |
| Mega Roulette | Pragmatic Play | 1–5 Mega Multipliers of 50x–500x on straight-up bets | RTP not published by the provider |
| Gold Vault Roulette | Evolution | 5–20 Gold Bars of 50x each, plus at most one 500x Super Gold Bar | RTP not published by the provider |
| Red Door Roulette | Evolution | 3–15 Key numbers with 2x–20x; a winning Key sends you to a bonus wheel | RTP not published by the provider |
In Lightning Roulette an ordinary straight-up win returns 30 units instead of 36, so you need a multiplier to beat a standard game on that bet. Splits, corners, red/black and dozens pay as normal. Our pages on Lightning Roulette and XXXtreme Lightning Roulette explain each game in full.
Placing roulette bets on a phone screen
A roulette layout packs dozens of betting spots into a grid, and a phone screen is narrow. Apps handle this in different ways: some zoom into part of the layout, some switch between the table and a racetrack view, and many rotate between portrait and landscape. Each game is different, so open its help screen to see how it works.
- Check the chip value before you tap; tiny chips are easy to mix up.
- Watch split and corner taps: on a small grid it is easy to land on the wrong line between numbers.
- Use an undo or clear option before the timer ends, if the game offers one, when you place a chip by mistake.
- Re-bet is allowed. UK rules ban autoplay, but a button that repeats your last bet for a new round is not autoplay.
Our guide to landscape vs portrait mode in casino apps covers screen orientation in more depth.
How to start playing real money roulette in an app
- Install the casino’s official app from the App Store or Google Play, or open its mobile site.
- Register and pass age and identity checks; UK apps must verify you before you deposit or play, including demo games.
- Set a deposit limit when prompted before your first deposit.
- Open the roulette section and choose a single-zero game: European, French or a live European table.
- Tap the help or information icon and confirm the wheel type, payouts and published return.
- Choose your chip value and place bets before the timer closes.
- Keep an eye on the net spend and session time shown on screen, and stop at your limit.
The rules and return must be available before you play under UK standards; our page on RTP information rules explains what apps must show.
UK rules for roulette apps
Since 17 January 2025, the Gambling Commission’s game design rules have covered all online casino games, not just slots. For roulette that means:
- No autoplay: each spin must be started by you.
- 5-second minimum: at least 5 seconds from the start of one game cycle to the next.
- No multi-wheel play: apps can’t let you play several casino games at once.
- Net spend and time: shown in real time during play.
- No celebrating losses: a return equal to or less than your stake must not be presented as a win.
The £5 and £2 online slot stake limits don’t apply to roulette, which has its own table limits. Credit cards can’t be used to gamble, and winnings aren’t taxed for UK players. Our pages on game speed rules and the autoplay ban give the dates.
Roulette app myths: systems, hot numbers and patterns
No betting system changes the house edge. Wizard of Odds’ betting systems analysis (opens in a new tab) puts it bluntly: systems fail to beat games with a house advantage and can’t even dent it. Its simulations of Martingale, Fibonacci, d’Alembert and Labouchère all produced losses that matched the wheel’s edge.
Some systems feel successful because they win small amounts often. In Wizard of Odds’ d’Alembert simulations on single-zero even-money bets, players reached their session goal 89.81% to 99.26% of the time, yet the expected result was negative in every case, because the rare losing sessions were large.
Hot and cold numbers don’t help either. Each spin is independent. The best-known example is Monte Carlo in summer 1913, when the ball landed on black 26 times in a row. Believing red was ‘due’ after such a run is the classic example of the gambler’s fallacy: the wheel has no memory.
Which casino apps suit roulette players
The App Store listing for Coral Casino lists blackjack, roulette and Live Casino, and the Ladbrokes Casino app listing also names roulette, with live casino including game shows. PlayOJO lists table games and live casino, Casumo lists live casino and the 10bet app mentions live casino tables.
None of them publishes a full list of roulette tables we can confirm, so check the lobby for single-zero games. For rankings, see our best roulette apps and our answer on the best roulette game on an app.
Roulette app welcome offers: what to expect
Welcome offers rarely suit roulette. Our partner offers are mainly for slots, and roulette is often excluded or counts for less towards wagering, so read the terms before you assume a bonus will help on the wheel. All offers are 18+ and terms apply.
- Casumo: a 50% bonus up to £100 on your first deposit of £20 or more, opt-in required. Wager the bonus 10x within 7 days; maximum £5 per bet while it is active; game, play and payment restrictions apply.
- 10bet: a 100% match up to £25 if you choose the casino welcome bonus at sign-up and deposit within 7 days. Wager it 10x on slots within 3 days; maximum bonus winnings £1,000; Skrill and Neteller deposits excluded.
- Coral: bet £10 on slots to get 100 free spins on selected games, 10p each. Accept within 48 hours, use within 7 days, no wagering on spin winnings; PayPal and some other payment methods don’t qualify.
For roulette, pick an app for its single-zero tables, clear rules and safer-gambling tools, and treat any slot bonus as a side benefit.

Frequently asked questions
Which roulette is best to play on an app?
Single-zero roulette is the best value, and French roulette with La Partage is better still on even-money bets. European roulette has a 2.70% house edge, French roulette about 1.35% on even-money bets, and American roulette 5.26%. Multiplier games such as Lightning Roulette trade lower standard payouts for occasional big multipliers. Our European roulette on mobile page explains the single-zero game in detail.
Is roulette on a casino app rigged?
UK-licensed roulette apps are not allowed to rig results. RNG games must produce acceptably random outcomes under the Gambling Commission’s RTS 7, and compensated games that adjust results are banned. Live wheels are physical and filmed in real time. The house edge still means you are likely to lose over time. Our guide on RNG games on mobile explains how random results are tested.
Do roulette apps pay less than real casinos?
No, a roulette game doesn’t pay less just because it runs on a phone. The payouts are fixed by the game’s rules, such as 35 to 1 for a single number, and the edge comes from the zero pockets. Check the game’s help screen for its rules and return. Exceptions are variants like Lightning Roulette, where straight-up bets pay 29 to 1. Our page on RTP on mobile covers this myth.
What is the safest bet in roulette?
In maths terms no bet is safer, because every standard bet on a single-zero wheel has the same 2.70% house edge. Even-money bets such as red or black win most often, 48.65% of the time on a European wheel, so your balance moves more slowly. On French tables, La Partage cuts the edge on those bets to about 1.35%. See our roulette bets on a phone screen guide for every option.
Can you play live roulette on a phone?
Yes, live roulette works in most UK casino apps. A real wheel is streamed from a studio while you bet on a layout on your screen. You need a steady connection because the video streams continuously, and betting timers can close quickly. Auto roulette uses an automated wheel with no dealer. Our live roulette on mobile page explains the formats and data use.
Does a roulette betting system work in apps?
No. Systems such as Martingale, Fibonacci, d’Alembert and Labouchère change your stake sizes, not the odds of any spin. Simulations by Wizard of Odds show losses settling at the house edge whatever system is used. Some systems win small amounts often but lose heavily when they fail, and table limits can stop you recovering. Our blackjack strategy on mobile page shows the Martingale arithmetic in pounds.
Is Lightning Roulette worth playing on mobile?
It depends what you want. Lightning Roulette adds 50x to 500x multipliers on one to five numbers each round, but ordinary straight-up wins pay 29 to 1 instead of 35 to 1. UK operator game pages list its RTP at 97.10% to 97.30%, at or slightly below standard European roulette’s 97.30%. It suits players who enjoy the chance of a rare large win. See which casino apps have Lightning Roulette.
Do stake limits apply to roulette apps?
No. Those £5 and £2 caps cover online slots only, not table games. Roulette tables set their own minimum and maximum bets, shown on the table or in the lobby. Other rules still apply, including no autoplay, a 5-second minimum game cycle and a real-time display of net spend and time played. Our page on slot stake limits explains exactly which games the limits cover.
