Live roulette on mobile
Live roulette on mobile streams a real wheel, a real ball and usually a real croupier to your phone, while you place chips on a touch layout before betting closes. The maths matches animated roulette, but the pace, the table type and your connection decide what an hour at the wheel actually costs.
Key takeaways
- Live roulette uses a physical wheel filmed in a studio; the app overlays a betting grid and a countdown.
- Single-zero tables carry a 2.70% house edge; American double-zero tables carry 5.26%.
- Faster tables cost more per hour at the same stake: a 25-second Speed round roughly doubles the hourly spend of a standard table.
- Multiplier games such as Lightning Roulette cut the normal straight-up payout from 35:1 to 29:1 to fund their boosts.
- UK rules ban autoplay and multi-table play in live casino and require your net spend to be shown in real time.
- Wheel
- Single zero (37 pockets) on most tables
- House edge
- 2.70% single zero, 5.26% double zero
- La Partage
- 1.35% on even-money bets
- Speed Roulette round
- About 25 seconds
- Autoplay
- Banned in UK live casino since 17 January 2025
What live roulette on mobile actually is
Live roulette is a live dealer game: a camera films a physical wheel in a studio or casino, and the app streams that video to your phone with a betting layout on top. Wikipedia's description of live casino notes that results come from real equipment in real time, and that optical character recognition turns the physical result into data the game software can settle bets with.
That is the key difference from animated roulette, where a random number generator picks the pocket. Both are legal in Great Britain and both must meet the Gambling Commission's technical standards, but they feel different. Live tables are slower, more sociable and heavier on data; RNG tables are quicker and lighter.
The biggest supplier behind UK live tables is Evolution, which says it has offered online live casino since 2006 and runs more than 2,000 live tables and game show environments. Pragmatic Play Live is another studio you will see, and names Bucharest as the studio its roulette is broadcast from. For the wider picture of every game on phones, start at our mobile casino games hub.
How a live roulette round plays out on your phone
Every live roulette table follows the same rhythm, even if the camera angles and graphics differ. Knowing the order of events matters on a phone, because the betting window is short and a slow connection can eat into it.
- Open the live casino section of your app and choose a roulette table. Check the minimum and maximum stakes shown on the table tile or in its info screen.
- Wait for the betting window to open. A countdown timer shows how long you have; Pragmatic Play says its Mega Roulette gives 20 seconds to place bets.
- Pick a chip value, then tap the numbers or betting areas you want. Check the total stake before the timer runs out.
- Betting closes and the croupier spins the wheel and launches the ball. On Speed tables, Evolution says betting happens only during the spin itself.
- The ball settles, the result is read and shown on screen, and winning bets are paid to your balance.
- The layout clears and the next betting window opens. Your session clock and net spend keep running on screen.
If you want to repeat a bet, many tables have a re-bet control. The Gambling Commission has said a re-bet feature is not autoplay, because you still start each round yourself. Our guide to roulette bets on a phone screen covers chip placement in detail.
Live roulette tables you'll find in UK casino apps
Lobbies can list dozens of roulette tables, but most fall into a handful of types. The table below uses the developers' own descriptions, taken from Evolution's live roulette range (opens in a new tab) unless noted. Which tables appear in a given app depends on the operator, so check the live lobby.
| Table type | Wheel | What's different |
|---|---|---|
| Live European Roulette | Single zero | Standard dealer table; Evolution runs standard and VIP versions |
| French Roulette | Single zero | La Partage: losing even-money bets lose only half when zero lands |
| American Roulette | Double zero (0 and 00) | Higher 5.26% edge; Evolution says its limits are lower than its other roulette games |
| Speed Roulette | Single zero | About 25 seconds spin to spin, roughly half a standard round |
| Immersive Roulette | Single zero | Several cameras, 200 frames-per-second video and a slow-motion replay of the winning number |
| Auto Roulette | European, French or American | No dealer; an automated wheel capable of 60 to 80 games an hour |
| Double Ball Roulette | Single zero | Two balls give two winning numbers per spin, with payouts up to 1,300 to 1 |
| Dual Play Roulette | Single zero | A real casino-floor table; Evolution names locations in the UK, Malta, Romania and the US |
If you want to compare wheel types in depth, our European roulette guide breaks down the single-zero layout, and our general roulette app guide covers RNG tables too.
Multiplier live roulette: Lightning, XXXtreme, Gold Vault and more
Multiplier tables add a random boost to some straight-up numbers each round. They look exciting on a small screen, but the boost is paid for somewhere, usually by a lower base payout on single numbers.
| Game | Boosted spots per round | Multiplier range | Catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lightning Roulette (Evolution) | 1 to 5 Lucky Numbers | 50x to 500x | Unboosted straight-ups pay 29:1, not 35:1 |
| XXXtreme Lightning Roulette (Evolution) | 1 to 5, plus up to 9 Chain Lightning spots (10 max) | 50x to 500x; Double Strikes 600x to 2,000x | Multiplier needs a straight-up on a lit number |
| Gold Vault Roulette (Evolution) | 5 to 20 Gold Bars | 50x per bar, up to 150x on one spot; one 500x Super Gold Bar at most | European roulette with an RNG layer |
| Mega Roulette (Pragmatic Play) | 1 to 5 Mega Multipliers | 50x to 500x | Applies to straight-up bets only |
| Red Door Roulette (Evolution) | 3 to 15 Keys | 2x to 20x | A straight-up win on a Key sends you to a 64-segment bonus wheel |
Lightning Roulette is the clearest example of the trade. A normal straight-up returns 36 units for a 1-unit win; an unboosted Lightning straight-up returns 30. UK operator game pages list Lightning Roulette's return to player as 97.10% to 97.30%, which means a house edge of 2.70% to 2.90% depending on the bet. Read more in our Lightning Roulette guide, which also covers the XXXtreme version.
Outside bets such as red/black and dozens pay their normal amounts in Lightning Roulette, according to Evolution's game page. Only straight-up bets can catch a multiplier.
What live roulette on mobile costs per hour
Expected loss is stake multiplied by house edge, multiplied by the number of rounds. On a phone that last part catches people out, because a quick table can double the number of bets you make in an hour without the stake looking any bigger.
Evolution says a Speed Roulette round takes about 25 seconds and is about half a standard round, so a standard table runs at roughly 50 seconds a round, or about 72 rounds an hour. Speed tables manage about 144, and Evolution describes Auto Roulette as capable of 60 to 80 games an hour.
| Table | Rounds per hour | Total staked | House edge | Expected loss |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard European | About 72 | £144 | 2.70% | £3.89 |
| French, even-money bets | About 72 | £144 | 1.35% | £1.94 |
| Speed Roulette | About 144 | £288 | 2.70% | £7.78 |
| Auto Roulette (top of range) | 80 | £160 | 2.70% | £4.32 |
| American (double zero) | About 72 | £144 | 5.26% | £7.57 |
These are long-run averages. In any single hour you could be well up or well down, and losses are the likely outcome over time. Setting a deposit limit before you start is the simplest way to keep the bill where you want it.
Live roulette odds: choosing the cheapest wheel
Live tables use the same payouts as RNG tables, so the wheel decides the edge. A single-zero wheel has 37 pockets and every standard bet loses 1/37 of its stake on average, which is 2.70%. A double-zero wheel has 38 pockets with the same payouts, which pushes the edge to 5.26%, and the American five-number bet costs 7.89%.
French rules are the cheapest option for anyone who sticks to red/black, odd/even or high/low. Under La Partage, half of an even-money bet comes back when zero lands, which halves the edge to about 1.35% on those bets only. Inside bets, dozens and columns stay at 2.70%. Wizard of Odds' roulette basics (opens in a new tab) sets out the full probability tables.
In short: on a live lobby, a French table beats a European one for even-money players, and either beats an American table by a wide margin. Our explainer on the house edge shows how the figure works across other games.
Live roulette vs RNG and First Person roulette on a phone
Animated roulette relies on software. Gambling Commission standard RTS 7 says results must be acceptably random, that predicting the next number should be computationally infeasible, and that adaptive or compensated games are not allowed. For physical equipment, the same standard says the items that decide a result should not be altered and players should not be able to touch them.
Evolution also sells First Person roulette, which is an RNG game drawn in 3D rather than filmed. Its First Person range includes a Go Live button that takes you from the animated version to the live table of the same game. That is handy if you want to learn a layout quickly before joining a slower live round. Our First Person games guide explains the format.
| Point | Live roulette | RNG or First Person roulette |
|---|---|---|
| Result decided by | Physical wheel and ball | Random number generator |
| Pace | Set by the studio (25 to 50 seconds or so) | Set by you, with a 5-second UK minimum per game cycle |
| Data use | Higher: continuous video | Lower: graphics load once |
| Dealer chat | Usually available | No |
| Edge on single zero | 2.70% | 2.70% |
Streaming live roulette on mobile data, Wi-Fi and older phones
A live table is a video stream, so it uses more data and more battery than an animated game. Pragmatic Play says its studios use multiple 4K cameras and that its streaming can reach glass-to-glass latency as low as 1.5 to 2 seconds, conditions permitting. In practice, a weak signal shows up as a frozen picture or a betting window that seems shorter than it should be.
- Use Wi-Fi where you can, especially on a capped data plan. Our guide to live casino on mobile data explains the trade-offs.
- Close other streaming apps so the table gets the bandwidth.
- If the picture drops mid-round, bets accepted before betting closed are settled on the real result; check the game rules and your history afterwards. See how casino apps handle disconnections.
- Turn the phone sideways if the table supports landscape, which gives the wheel and the layout more room.
Chat is part of the appeal. Players can usually message the dealer, who replies out loud. Keep it polite and short; the dealer is working a shift, not chatting with friends.
UK rules for live roulette in casino apps
Since 17 January 2025, several rules that used to cover only slots also apply to live roulette. The Gambling Commission said it saw no convincing reason to leave live casino out of the autoplay ban. The key points are set out in RTS 14 on responsible product design (opens in a new tab).
- No autoplay: every round must be started by you. A re-bet button is allowed.
- At least 5 seconds from the start of one game cycle to the next for casino games other than slots. Live rounds are already well above that.
- No playing several games at once; the Commission named roulette and blackjack tables as examples of multi-product play it was stopping.
- Net spend and time spent must be shown in real time during a session.
- Your age and identity must be verified before you can deposit or play, including free-to-play versions.
- Credit cards can't be used to gamble in Great Britain, including through e-wallets funded by one.
The £5 and £2 online slot stake limits do not apply to roulette, so table limits are set by the game and operator. That makes your own limits more important. Read our full guide to game speed rules on mobile.
Live roulette myths: hot numbers, biased wheels and systems
A physical wheel tempts people to look for patterns. In summer 1913 at Monte Carlo, the ball landed on black 26 times in a row, which is the classic example of the gambler's fallacy: each spin is independent, and a long run doesn't make the other colour due.
Biased wheels are a real piece of history. Joseph Jagger exploited one at Monte Carlo in 1873. Today, studio wheels are built and checked so that this doesn't happen, and Wizard of Odds has shown how hard bias is to prove even with thousands of spins: one reader's data had 278 hits on a number across 8,672 spins against 234 expected, and that still had a 1 in 466 chance of being luck.
Betting systems don't help either. The Martingale doubles after each loss, but the chance of losing eight even-money bets in a row on a single-zero wheel is (19/37) to the power of 8, about 0.48%, and when it happens the next bet is 256 times the first. Simulations by Wizard of Odds found that loss-to-wager ratios settled on the house edge whatever system was used.

Frequently asked questions
Can you play live roulette on your phone?
Yes, live roulette works on any phone that runs a licensed casino app or a mobile browser. The table is a video stream with a touch betting layout on top, so you need a steady connection and enough screen space to place chips accurately. Wi-Fi is easier on your data allowance. Our live casino on mobile data guide explains what to expect, and the best live casino apps list compares UK options.
Is live roulette on mobile rigged?
No, not at a UK-licensed casino. Live roulette uses a physical wheel and ball, and Gambling Commission standards say equipment that decides results must not be altered or touched by players. Results are read by software and settled automatically. The house edge, 2.70% on a single-zero wheel, is how the casino makes money, so there's no need for anything else. Read are live dealers real people and our roulette app guide.
Which live roulette table has the best odds?
A French table with La Partage is cheapest if you bet only on even-money chances, at about 1.35%. For every other bet, any single-zero table, European or French, costs 2.70%. American tables with a double zero cost 5.26%, and their five-number bet costs 7.89%. Multiplier games such as Lightning Roulette sit close to the single-zero figure but pay less on unboosted straight-ups. See European roulette on mobile for the full breakdown.
How fast is a live roulette round?
It depends on the table. Evolution says its Speed Roulette takes about 25 seconds spin to spin, which is about half a standard round, and its Auto Roulette can run 60 to 80 games an hour. A standard dealer table therefore runs at roughly 72 rounds an hour. Faster tables mean more bets and a bigger expected loss per hour at the same stake. Our speed games guide covers this in more detail.
Is there autoplay on live roulette in UK apps?
No. The Gambling Commission banned autoplay for all online casino games, including live roulette, from 17 January 2025, so you must start each round yourself. A re-bet button that repeats your last stake is still allowed, because you press it each time. The same rules stop you playing several tables at once. Read more about the autoplay ban and game speed rules.
Can I use a casino bonus on live roulette?
Usually only partly, if at all. Welcome offers are generally built for slots, and live and table games are often excluded or count for less towards wagering. Free spins can only be used on the slots named in the terms. Check the bonus terms in your app before you play a live table with bonus money, because breaking a game rule can void the bonus. Our page on using a bonus on live casino explains more.
Do the £5 and £2 stake limits apply to live roulette?
No. The Gambling Commission's online stake limits of £5 per spin, or £2 for 18 to 24-year-olds, apply only to online slots, meaning reel-based games. Live and RNG roulette are outside those limits, so the table's own minimum and maximum apply. That makes personal limits more useful. Set a deposit limit in your account settings, and see our guide to setting deposit limits in a casino app.
Is Lightning Roulette better than normal live roulette?
It isn't better value, just different. Lightning Roulette pays 29:1 on unboosted straight-up wins instead of 35:1, and uses the difference to fund 50x to 500x multipliers on one to five numbers a round. UK operator pages list its return to player as 97.10% to 97.30%, slightly below or equal to a standard single-zero table. Choose it for the entertainment, not the odds. Read our Lightning Roulette page for the details.
