Two-factor authentication (2FA)
Two-factor authentication (2FA) is a sign-in method that asks for two different kinds of proof, usually your password plus a one-time code sent to your phone or generated by an app. On a casino account, where your balance and payment details sit, it means a stolen password alone isn't enough for someone to get in.
Key takeaways
- 2FA pairs something you know (a password) with something you have (your phone) or something you are (a fingerprint).
- The NCSC says it makes accounts harder to break into even when criminals know your password.
- Authenticator apps are generally stronger than SMS codes, but SMS is far better than nothing.
- Partner store listings don't say whether 2FA is offered, so check each app's security settings.

- 2FA, 2-step verification (2SV)

Two-factor authentication: what it means
Authentication is how a service checks that you are who you say you are. "Two-factor" means it uses two separate types of evidence, so that losing one doesn't hand over your account. The UK's National Cyber Security Centre calls the same idea 2-step verification, or 2SV.
A password plus a security question isn't true two-factor, because both are things you know. A password plus a code from your phone is, because the phone is something you physically have. Other security words are in our casino app glossary.
The three authentication factors
| Factor | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Something you know | Information only you should have | Password or PIN |
| Something you have | A physical item in your possession | Phone receiving a code, or an authenticator app |
| Something you are | A physical trait | Face ID or a fingerprint |
Biometric login on its own usually replaces your password on one phone rather than adding a second factor. 2FA layers two factors so that a guessed or leaked password still leaves the account closed.
2FA methods compared
The NCSC's guidance on setting up 2SV (opens in a new tab) says it makes it harder for criminals to access your online accounts even if they know your password. It names authenticator apps as the main alternative to text messages and says SMS isn't the most secure option but is far better than none.
| Method | How it works | Strengths | Weak points |
|---|---|---|---|
| SMS code | A one-time code is texted to your number | Simple; works on any phone | Depends on your mobile number staying secure |
| Authenticator app | An app on your phone generates a code that changes every few seconds | Not tied to your phone number | You need a backup plan if you lose the phone |
| Email code | A code or link is sent to your inbox | Easy to use | Only as safe as your email account |
| Device prompt | An approval request on a trusted device | Quick | Easy to approve without thinking |
Two-factor authentication on casino apps
None of the App Store or Google Play listings for Coral, Ladbrokes, PlayOJO, Casumo or 10bet says whether two-factor sign-in is offered, so this isn't something we can confirm brand by brand. Look in the app's account or security settings, or ask support. Our answer to whether casino apps use two-factor authentication explains what to expect.
Even where 2FA isn't offered, a casino account has protections. UK operators must verify your age and identity before you can gamble, and KYC checks can be repeated later, for example when you ask to withdraw. 2FA protects the front door; those checks protect the money.
How to switch on two-factor authentication
- Sign in to the casino app and open your account or security settings.
- Look for a two-factor, 2-step or extra security option; if there isn't one, contact support to ask.
- Choose an authenticator app if offered, or your mobile number for SMS codes.
- Scan the code or enter the number, then type the first code to confirm.
- Save any backup codes somewhere safe away from your phone.
- Turn on 2FA for the email account linked to your casino account as well.

2FA, verification and other related terms
Two-factor authentication is easy to confuse with age verification, which is the one-off legal check of who you are. Other related terms include Face ID and the broader advice in keeping your casino account secure. If your account has been locked after failed sign-ins, see why a casino app account gets locked.

Frequently asked questions
What is two-factor authentication?
Two-factor authentication is a sign-in process that needs two different kinds of proof, typically your password and a one-time code from your phone. If someone learns your password, they still can't sign in without the second factor. The NCSC calls it 2-step verification and recommends turning it on wherever it's offered. Our guide to keeping your casino account secure covers the other basics.
Do casino apps use two-factor authentication?
Some online services offer it, but the store listings for our partner casino apps don't say whether they do, so check the app's security settings or ask support. UK operators must verify your age and identity before you gamble, which is a different process. If 2FA isn't available, a strong unique password and a secured email account matter even more. Read do casino apps use two-factor authentication.
Is SMS two-factor authentication safe enough?
It's much better than no second step, according to the NCSC, though it isn't the most secure option. Codes sent by text depend on your mobile number staying in your control. An authenticator app generates codes on the phone itself, so it's generally stronger where offered. Our guide to two-factor authentication for casino accounts compares the choices.
Is Face ID the same as two-factor authentication?
Not usually. Face ID typically replaces typing your password on one iPhone, so it's still a single check. Two-factor authentication combines two different types of proof, such as a password plus a code. Face ID can form one factor in a two-factor setup, depending on how a service is designed. See our Face ID definition for how Apple handles the data.
What if I lose the phone I use for 2FA codes?
Use the backup codes you saved when setting it up, or contact the casino's support team to prove your identity and reset the second factor. Expect them to ask security questions or for documents, because they must be sure it's you. Report the lost phone to your network so the number can be moved. Our answer on what happens if you forget your casino app password covers account recovery.
Does two-factor authentication stop me gambling too much?
No, 2FA is a security tool, not a safer-gambling tool. It keeps other people out but won't limit your own play. For that, use deposit limits, reality checks, time-outs or self-exclusion through GAMSTOP, and talk to the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133 if gambling is causing problems. Our guide to setting deposit limits in a casino app is a good place to start.
