Push notification
A push notification is a message an installed app sends to your phone's lock screen or notification centre, even when the app isn't open. Casino apps can use them for account alerts such as a completed withdrawal, and for promotions if you agree. You control both: your phone decides whether the app may notify you, and your account decides what marketing you get.
Key takeaways
- Push notifications appear on your lock screen without you opening the app.
- Phone settings control whether an app can send them at all.
- UK operators must let you choose which products and channels you get marketing for.
- If alerts prompt you to play when you hadn't planned to, switch them off.

What a push notification is
The word "push" means the message is sent to you, rather than you going to fetch it. The app's publisher sends it through Apple's or Google's notification service, and your phone displays it as a banner, a sound or a badge on the app icon. Only installed apps (and, in some cases, websites you allow in the browser) can do this.
None of the store listings for Coral, Ladbrokes, PlayOJO, Casumo or 10bet mentions notifications, so what each one sends is something to check in the app itself. Other app terms are in our casino app glossary.
Types of casino app push notification
It helps to separate messages about your account from messages trying to get you to play. They're governed differently and you may want to treat them differently.
| Kind | Typical purpose | Who controls it |
|---|---|---|
| Account and security | Sign-in alerts, password changes, verification requests | Phone settings |
| Payments | Deposit received, withdrawal processed | Phone settings |
| Marketing | Offers, new games, reminders to play | Phone settings and your account's marketing preferences |
| Safer gambling | Limit reached, reality check, time-out ending | Phone settings; on-screen reality checks are separate |
A reality check shown during play is a different thing. It's an on-screen message required by the Gambling Commission's rules, which let you set how often it appears and must be acknowledged to dismiss.
UK rules on push notification marketing
Since 1 May 2025, LCCP social responsibility code 5.1.12 (opens in a new tab) has required online operators to let customers choose which product types they hear about (betting, casino or bingo) and which channels they're contacted through. The channels the Commission named as required are phone call, email and SMS.
In its response on direct marketing choice (opens in a new tab), the Commission said a separate push notification option was unnecessary. Your phone's own notification switch already gives you that control. Advertising rules also say gambling marketing must not be aimed at under-18s. Our guide to push notifications and gambling marketing goes into the detail.
How to turn off casino push notifications
- Open your phone's Settings and find Notifications.
- Choose the casino app from the list.
- Switch notifications off entirely, or turn off sounds and lock screen banners only.
- Open the casino app's account settings and look for the marketing preferences option.
- Untick casino or other products you don't want offers for, and the channels you don't want used.
- On Android, Digital Wellbeing's Focus mode can also pause chosen apps and their notifications for set periods.
Google describes Focus mode in its Digital Wellbeing help (opens in a new tab). For a full walkthrough, see how to turn off casino app notifications or each brand's settings page, such as the Coral app settings and notifications guide.
Push notifications and the urge to play
A well-timed offer on your lock screen can turn a quiet evening into a session you didn't plan. If that sounds familiar, switching marketing notifications off is a simple, effective step, and you can keep account alerts on.
Our safer gambling page on notifications and gambling urges has more practical ideas. If gambling is causing problems, the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133 is free and open 24/7, and GAMSTOP blocks all GB-licensed online gambling for 6 months, 1 year or 5 years.

Frequently asked questions
What is a push notification?
A push notification is a message an installed app sends to your phone, appearing on the lock screen or in the notification centre even when the app is closed. The publisher sends it through Apple's or Google's notification service. Casino apps can use them for account alerts and, if you allow it, promotions. Our guide to casino app permissions explains how notification access fits with other permissions.
How do I stop casino app notifications?
Turn them off in your phone's notification settings for that app, which stops every alert at once. To stop the offers but keep account messages, change your marketing preferences in the casino account instead. UK operators have had to offer product and channel choices since 1 May 2025. Our answer on how to turn off casino app notifications covers both phones.
Can casino apps send me offers by notification?
Only if you allow notifications on your phone and haven't opted out of that marketing in your account. UK rules require operators to let you choose the product types and channels you hear about, and you can change your mind at any time. Gambling marketing must also not target under-18s. See can casino apps send me offers for the full picture.
Is a reality check the same as a push notification?
No. A reality check is an on-screen message inside the game showing how long you've been playing, and UK rules require you to be able to set how often it appears and to acknowledge it to remove it. A push notification arrives from outside the app, often on the lock screen. You can switch push alerts off without affecting reality checks. Read more in reality checks in casino apps.
Do UK rules treat push notifications as a marketing channel?
The Gambling Commission's direct marketing rule requires choices for phone calls, email and SMS, and it decided a separate push notification option wasn't needed, because your phone's notification setting already gives you control. Operators must still let you choose which products you get marketing about. Our guide to push notifications and gambling marketing explains the reasoning.
Will turning off notifications affect my withdrawals?
No. Notifications only tell you what has happened; the withdrawal itself is processed by the operator whatever your settings. You'll need to open the app or check your email to see updates instead. Your transaction history in the app shows the status of each payment. See how long casino app withdrawals take for published timeframes.
