What is cashback on a casino app?

What is cashback on a casino app? It’s a promotion that hands back a set share of what you lose, or of what you stake, over a stated period. It lowers the cost of playing rather than creating a profit, and its real value depends on the rate, the period, the games that count and whether it arrives as cash or as bonus funds.

Key takeaways

  • Cashback returns a percentage of losses or stakes; you still end the period down overall.
  • Cash paid with no wagering is worth more than the same sum paid as bonus funds.
  • Any wagering on bonus cashback is capped at 10x in Great Britain since 19 January 2026.
  • Among our partners, PlayOJO’s OJOplus is the published money-back scheme; check the app for its current rate.
  • Never play longer to qualify for cashback: it only ever returns part of a loss.

Cashback on a casino app, explained in plain terms

Casino app cashback is a refund of part of your play. The operator picks a basis (usually your net losses or your total stakes), a rate such as 5% or 10%, and a period, then credits the result to your account. It sits alongside the other reward types covered in our casino app questions hub, and our cashback glossary entry gives the one-line definition.

The key point is that cashback shrinks a loss rather than reversing it. If you lose £40 and get 10% back, you are still £36 down. That is why the details matter more than the headline percentage.

Two questions decide what an offer is really worth. First, is it calculated on losses or on everything you stake? Second, is the money paid as withdrawable cash or as bonus funds with a wagering requirement attached?

Types of cashback you’ll see in casino apps

Operators describe cashback in different ways, and the label in the app doesn’t always tell you which kind it is. This table sorts the common versions by how they’re worked out.

Common casino app cashback types
TypeHow it’s worked outWhat to check
Loss-backA percentage of net losses over a day, week or promotionHow ‘net loss’ is defined, and whether bonus play counts
Money back on stakesA small percentage of every qualifying bet, win or loseWhich games earn it and how fast it’s credited
One-off cashback promotionA refund on losses on named games during a set windowOpt-in, dates, maximum refund, game list
Reward currencyPoints or coins earned through play that can be swapped laterExchange rate, expiry and what you can spend them on

Reward currencies aren’t strictly cashback, but they work in a similar way and are often marketed beside it. Our page on loyalty points in casino apps covers those in detail.

What casino app cashback is worth in pounds

Standard game maths gives the starting point: expected loss = total stake × house edge. A slot with a 96% RTP has a house edge of 4%. The figures below are an illustration with made-up rates, not any app’s published terms.

Say you stake £200 in total over a week on that slot. Your expected loss is £200 × 4% = £8, although your actual result could be well above or below that.

Illustration: £200 staked on a 96% RTP slot
Offer (illustrative)CalculationReturned
10% loss-back, average week£8 expected loss × 10%£0.80
10% loss-back, bad week (lost £50)£50 × 10%£5.00
1% money back on stakes£200 × 1%£2.00
£5 cashback paid as bonus, 10x wagering£50 extra play × 4% expected costabout £3.00 left on average

Two lessons stand out. Loss-back pays most when you have lost most, which is a poor reason to keep playing. And a bonus-funds payment with wagering is worth noticeably less than the same amount paid as cash, because the extra play also carries the house edge.

Which UK casino apps offer cashback?

Of our five partners, the PlayOJO app is the one built around money back. Its company material describes OJOplus as money back on every game played, and the App Store description calls it money back on every bet. The current rate isn’t something we can confirm here, so check the OJOplus area in the app, or read our explainer on what OJOplus is.

The others lean on reward schemes rather than a published cashback rate. The Coral Casino app lists Smart Rewards, Rewards Grabber and Coral Coins promotions in its App Store description. The Ladbrokes Casino app describes LadBucks, a reward currency used on arcade games, explained further in what LadBucks are.

UK rules on casino cashback offers

Cashback is an incentive, so it falls under the Gambling Commission’s rules on promotions. The most important ones for app players are below.

  • 10x wagering cap: since 19 January 2026, bonus funds can’t require more than ten times their value in wagering, under social responsibility code 5.1.1 (opens in a new tab). Our page on the UK wagering cap has the background.
  • One product per offer: from the same date, a promotion can’t mix gambling products, such as betting and casino, as explained under the mixed-product bonus ban.
  • No reward for speed: an operator can’t increase or change an incentive because you reached the qualifying spend faster than the full offer period.
  • Clear terms and opt-in: terms must be clear, fair and easy to find, and you should opt in rather than be enrolled automatically.
  • Harm checks come first: where there are strong signs of harm, operators must stop marketing and new bonus take-up under the customer interaction rules.

The Commission’s consumer guide on free offers and bonuses (opens in a new tab) adds that you should always be able to tell whether you’re playing with your own money or bonus funds.

How to check a cashback offer before you opt in

A minute with the terms tells you whether an offer is worth anything to you. Work through these on your phone before you tap to join.

  1. Open the promotion in the app and find its full terms, usually linked under the headline.
  2. Find the basis: does it pay on net losses or on every stake?
  3. Note the period and the cut-off time, including the time zone if stated.
  4. Check which games count; slots are common, while table and live games are often excluded or count for less.
  5. See whether it’s paid as cash or bonus funds, and if bonus, check the wagering multiple and expiry.
  6. Look for a maximum payout, since some refunds have a cap.
  7. Decide on your own spending limit first, and treat any cashback as a small extra rather than a target.

Our guide to reading casino app bonus terms walks through the same clauses for welcome offers.

Cashback vs a welcome bonus in a casino app

A welcome offer is a one-time incentive for new customers, often spins or a deposit match. Cashback is usually ongoing or repeats over set periods, and it pays out after play rather than up front.

That timing changes how they feel. Spins give you something to use straight away; cashback gives you a partial refund afterwards. Neither changes a game’s RTP, and both come with conditions worth reading. Our guide to how wagering works in casino apps explains why bonus funds cost more to clear than they first appear.

Cashback myths and how to keep it in proportion

Cashback doesn’t make a game fairer or improve your odds. The return is calculated after the house edge has done its work, so over time you should expect to lose more than you get back.

Loss-back deals can make it tempting to chase a refund by playing on. If you notice that pull, set a deposit limit or take a break. The National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133 is free and open 24/7.

Frequently asked questions

Is casino cashback real money?

Sometimes, but it depends on the terms. Some schemes pay cashback as cash you can withdraw straight away, while others credit bonus funds that must be wagered first. In Great Britain that wagering can’t exceed 10x the bonus since 19 January 2026. The promotion’s terms should say which applies; if they don’t, ask support before you play. Our wagering cap explainer covers the limit.

How is cashback calculated on a casino app?

It’s a percentage applied to either your net losses or your total stakes over a set period. A 10% loss-back on a £30 net loss returns £3, while 1% back on £200 of stakes returns £2 whether you won or lost. Check how the app defines ‘net loss’, which games count and whether there’s a maximum. Our cashback glossary entry sums up the terms.

Which UK casino app has cashback?

Among our partners, PlayOJO is the app built around money back, through its OJOplus scheme. Its company material describes OJOplus as money back on every game played. We can’t confirm the current rate here, so check the OJOplus area in the app. Other partners promote reward schemes rather than a published cashback rate. See our PlayOJO app review for more detail.

Does cashback mean I can’t lose money?

No. Cashback only returns part of a loss or part of your stakes, so you can still finish well down. With a 10% loss-back, losing £50 still leaves you £45 out of pocket. Treat it as a small discount on entertainment you’d have paid for anyway. If you find yourself playing to qualify for a refund, our page on setting deposit limits can help.

Is cashback better than free spins?

Neither is automatically better, because they work differently. Free spins come up front, usually on chosen slots at a fixed value, while cashback pays after you’ve played. Spins with no wagering are simple to value, at 10p each 100 spins is £10 of stakes. Cashback’s value depends on the rate and your losses. Compare both using our guide to free spins in casino apps.

Does cashback count on live casino and table games?

Often it doesn’t, or it counts for less, so check the game list in the terms. Many promotions are limited to slots, and live tables are a common exclusion. If a game isn’t named as eligible, assume it won’t earn cashback until support confirms otherwise. Our page on using a bonus on live casino explains the usual restrictions.

Can an app change a cashback offer after I’ve opted in?

Not usually. Gambling Commission guidance says operators shouldn’t vary or withdraw a promotion for a customer who has opted in, except to prevent fraud or similar unlawful behaviour. Terms must also be clear and easy to find. If you think an app has changed the deal unfairly, raise a complaint with the operator first, then see our guide on complaining about a casino app.

Is casino cashback taxed in the UK?

No. Gambling winnings aren’t taxed for UK players, and that includes cashback paid on your play. Operators pay remote gaming duty instead, which rose from 21% to 40% on 1 April 2026. You don’t need to declare cashback on a tax return as a player. Our answer on tax on casino app winnings has the details.
