What is demo mode on a casino app?

Demo mode on a casino app is a play-money version of a game: you spin or deal with pretend credits, so nothing you stake is real and nothing you win can be withdrawn. In Great Britain, a licensed app must check your age before it lets you open even a demo, and not every app or game offers one.

Key takeaways

  • Demo mode uses play credits only: no deposit, no cash stakes and no withdrawable winnings.
  • UK-licensed apps must age-verify you before you can open free-to-play versions of gambling games.
  • Whether a game has a demo depends on the app and the studio, so check the game's tile or info screen.
  • A demo shows rules, features and the paytable; it can't predict results or tell you a game is 'due'.
  • Free-to-play prize games and social casino apps are different products from a demo.

Demo mode on a casino app: the short answer

A demo is the same game screen you would see in real-money play, loaded with a balance of credits that have no cash value. You can press spin, open the paytable, trigger features if they land and watch how the game behaves, but the balance is reset or simply disappears when you close it.

Think of it as a test drive rather than a cheaper way to gamble. The point is to learn how a game works before you decide whether it is worth any of your own money. Our questions hub covers the related topics, from whether free casino apps pay real money to what a social casino app is.

For the formal definition, see our glossary entry on demo mode, and for a longer walkthrough of the feature across apps, the guide to demo mode on casino apps.

How a casino app demo works

The app loads the game with a starting pot of play credits. Each spin or hand deducts credits at whatever stake you choose and adds any return to the same pretend balance. Because the credits can't be bought, cashed out or transferred, there is nothing at risk and nothing to gain beyond information.

Under the Gambling Commission's technical standards, the rules, game description and the likelihood of winning (usually shown as RTP) must be available before you commit to play, so the info screen in a demo is a good place to read them. The RTS 3 standard on rules and game descriptions (opens in a new tab) sets that requirement. Our guide on how to find a game's RTP in an app explains where it usually sits.

A short demo session is a tiny sample. A run of good or bad results in play credits says nothing about what the next real spin will do, because every outcome is random.

Why UK casino apps verify your age before a demo

Since 7 May 2019, online operators licensed in Great Britain must verify a customer's age and identity before that person can deposit or gamble. The same rule set says customers must be age-verified before accessing free-to-play versions of gambling games. That is why a UK app will usually ask you to register and pass its checks before any demo opens.

The Commission's page on age, ID and financial verification (opens in a new tab) sets out what you should expect. Operators need at least your name, address and date of birth, and they check these against databases before asking for documents. Our pages on casino app age verification and the UK free-to-play game rules go into more detail.

The upshot: if a website or app lets anyone spin a casino-style game with no age check at all, it is either not a gambling product or it is not following UK rules for one.

How to find demo mode in a casino app

There is no standard button name across apps, and the operators we cover don't publish a list of which games run in demo. These steps work in most UK apps that offer it.

  1. Install the operator's app from the Apple App Store or Google Play, checking that the publisher matches the casino brand.
  2. Register and complete age verification. Expect to give your name, address and date of birth.
  3. Open the game lobby and tap a game's tile or its information icon rather than launching it straight away.
  4. Look for a play-for-fun, demo or practice option. If you only see a real-money stake panel, that game has no demo in this app.
  5. Read the paytable and rules screen, including the RTP, before you spin any play credits.
  6. Close the demo when you've learned what you wanted. Decide separately, and with a budget, whether to play for real.

Demo mode vs real money, prize games and social casino apps

Four products can look alike on a phone screen. The table shows how they differ.

Demo mode compared with other ways to play casino-style games
ModeYour money at stake? Can you win cash?Age check in UK apps
Demo modeNo, play credits onlyNoYes, before free-to-play versions
Real-money playYesYes, subject to the game's oddsYes, before deposit or play
Free-to-play prize gamesNo stake to enter (operator's terms apply)Yes, prizes set by the operatorYes, as an account holder
Social casino appsNo cash stakes; may sell coinsNo cash prizesDepends on the app's rating

Free-to-play prize games are promotions, not demos. The App Store listing for the Coral Casino app mentions free-to-play games with real-money prizes, and the Ladbrokes listing mentions Instant Spins, a daily prize wheel and game show and live roulette contests. See what a daily free game is on casino apps for how those work.

Social casino apps are a separate category again. Apple's age-rating definitions class betting without real money as 'Simulated Gambling', distinct from real 'Gambling'; Apple's age ratings reference (opens in a new tab) lists both. Our comparison of social casino apps vs real money apps explains the practical differences.

What a demo can and can't teach you

Useful and misleading lessons from demo mode
A demo is good forA demo can't tell you
How the reels, grid or table look on your screenWhether the next real spin will win
Where the paytable, rules and RTP areA game's true hit rate from a few dozen spins
How bonus features play out if they landThat a game is 'hot', 'cold' or 'due'
Which stake sizes the game allowsHow losing real money will feel
Whether the game suits portrait or landscapeAnything about a promotion's terms

The last row on the right matters. Play credits remove the sting of losing, which is exactly why a demo can make a game seem more fun than it is when your own money is involved. Read up on RTP and volatility to understand what the numbers on the info screen mean.

From demo to real money: what a session costs in pounds

Once you switch to real money, standard game maths applies: expected loss equals total amount staked multiplied by the house edge. The house edge is 100% minus the RTP.

Take Big Bass Bonanza, which has a published RTP of 96.71%, so a house edge of 3.29%. One hundred spins at 10p is £10 staked, and the expected loss is £10 × 3.29% = about 33p. One hundred spins at £1 is £100 staked, with an expected loss of about £3.29. Real sessions swing well above and below those averages, and the house edge means losses are likely over time. Check the game's help screen for the RTP of the version you're playing.

UK rules also change what real play looks like. Slots are capped at £5 a spin for players aged 25 and over and £2 for those aged 18 to 24, autoplay is banned and each slot spin takes at least 2.5 seconds. Our page on slot stake limits covers the detail.

Demo mode in the Coral, Ladbrokes and PlayOJO apps

None of these three operators publishes a list of demo-enabled games, so check the game's tile in each app. What the store listings do describe is below.

  • The Coral Casino app (Coral Casino: Slots & Games on the App Store, run by LC International Limited) lists slots, table games, live casino and free-to-play games with real-money prizes.
  • The Ladbrokes Casino app lists free-to-play games including Instant Spins and a daily prize wheel, alongside slots, blackjack, roulette and live casino.
  • The PlayOJO app, published by Skill On Net Ltd, lists slots, jackpot slots, bingo, table games and live casino, plus OJOplus money back on every game played.

All three are licensed by the Gambling Commission, so all three must verify your age before free-to-play versions of games. For the full list of what each lobby offers, see the Coral app games page.

Frequently asked questions

Is demo mode the same as playing for real?

The game screen and rules are meant to be the same, but nothing is at stake. You bet play credits that have no cash value, so none of your money is at risk and nothing you win can be withdrawn. A short demo run is also too small a sample to tell you how a game will pay over time. Read the paytable and RTP on the info screen, and see our page on whether games on casino apps are the same as on desktop for related differences.

Why do I have to verify my age to play a demo?

Because UK rules require it. The Gambling Commission's rules say licensed operators must age-verify customers before they can access free-to-play versions of gambling games, not just before they deposit. That stops under-18s practising on gambling products. Expect to give your name, address and date of birth when you register. Our guide to casino app age verification explains what is checked and what happens if the database checks fail.

Can I win real money in demo mode?

No. Demo winnings are play credits and disappear when you close the game or the balance resets. If an app promises cash prizes without a stake, that is a free-to-play prize promotion with its own terms, not a demo. Some UK apps list those, such as the Coral app's free-to-play games with real-money prizes. Read can you win real money on casino apps to see how real-money play differs.

Do all casino apps have a demo mode?

No, and there is no rule that says they must. Whether a game has a demo depends on the operator and the game studio, and the operators we cover don't publish lists of demo-enabled games. Live dealer games generally run with real tables and real stakes, so a demo is less common there. Check each game's tile or info screen, or ask live chat. Our guide to free casino games apps covers other no-stake options.

Is demo mode a good way to practise winning?

It is a good way to learn how a game works, not a way to improve your chances. Slot outcomes are random, and UK rules forbid adaptive games that adjust results towards a target return, so no amount of practice changes the odds. What a demo can do is show you the features, stake range and volatility before you spend anything. Our page on whether casino apps rig games explains how randomness is checked.

Is a social casino app the same as demo mode?

Not quite. A demo is a play-money version of a real casino game inside a licensed gambling app. A social casino app is a separate product that runs only on virtual coins, often sold through in-app purchases, with no cash prizes. Apple rates real-money gambling and simulated gambling differently. Read what a social casino app is and our social casino glossary entry for more.

Can I use demo mode without downloading an app?

Sometimes. Many operators run the same games in a mobile browser, and where a demo exists it may be available there too, but the UK age-verification rule still applies, so you will need an account first. Game studios also run their own demo sites, which may have their own age gates. Our page on whether you need to download an app compares the two routes.
