Wagering requirement: what it means

A wagering requirement is the total amount you must stake before bonus funds, or winnings from them, can be withdrawn as cash. A £20 bonus with a 10x wagering requirement means placing £200 of bets first. In Britain the requirement can't be more than 10 times the bonus, and your own deposit stays yours to withdraw at any time.

Key takeaways

  • Wagering requirement = the bets you must place before bonus money becomes cash.
  • Multiply the bonus by the multiple: £50 at 10x is £500 of stakes.
  • The house edge applies to every wagered pound, so clearing a bonus has a cost.
  • UK rules cap wagering at 10x the bonus from 19 January 2026.
  • Your deposit balance can be withdrawn at any time, bonus or not.

Wagering requirement: the definition

The Gambling Commission's glossary for operators (opens in a new tab) defines a wagering requirement as any requirement that a consumer must make wagers totalling a particular value for funds to become withdrawable. In plain English: bonus money comes with a stake target, and until you hit it, the bonus and anything won with it stay locked.

It's the most important line in most bonus terms, because it decides what a bonus is really worth. Related entries in our glossary include deposit match, welcome bonus and its opposite, no wagering.

How a wagering requirement works, step by step

Here's the general pattern for a deposit match bonus. The details, including which games count, come from each offer's own terms.

  1. You opt in and make a qualifying deposit, for example £50.
  2. The operator adds the bonus, say £50 for a 100% match, to a separate bonus balance.
  3. The terms set the multiple, for example 10x, so the target is £50 × 10 = £500 of stakes.
  4. Bets on eligible games count towards the target; restricted games may count for less or not at all.
  5. When £500 has been staked within the time limit, any remaining bonus balance becomes withdrawable cash.
  6. If the time runs out or the bonus balance reaches zero first, the bonus and its winnings are lost.

Table games, blackjack, roulette and live casino are often excluded or count for less, so check the terms before playing them with a bonus. Our guide to how wagering works in casino apps covers mixed balances and game rules in more detail.

What a wagering requirement costs you

Wagering isn't just a hurdle; it has a price. Every pound staked carries the game's house edge, so the expected cost of clearing a bonus is the total wagering multiplied by the edge. On a slot at 96% RTP the edge is 4%.

Expected cost of wagering at a 4% house edge

£10010x£1,000£40About £60
£10 (old-style 50x)50x£500£20Less than nothing

The last row shows why the cap matters: under a 50x requirement, the expected cost of wagering is bigger than the bonus itself. These are averages; real sessions vary, and a bonus balance can run out before the target is reached.

Two worked examples from partner offers

Casumo's welcome offer (18+, new customers, opt-in, terms apply) is a 50% bonus up to £100 on a first deposit of at least £20. A £200 deposit earns the full £100 bonus, which must be wagered 10x, so £1,000 of stakes within 7 days, with a maximum of £5 per bet while the bonus is active. At a 4% edge the expected cost of that wagering is £40. Details are on the Casumo welcome bonus page.

10bet's casino welcome bonus (18+, new UK customers, terms apply) is a 100% match up to £25, chosen at sign-up with a first deposit within 7 days. The £25 bonus must be wagered 10x on slots, £250 in total, within 3 days; maximum bonus winnings are £1,000, and Skrill and Neteller deposits are excluded. Expected cost at 4%: £10. See the 10bet welcome bonus page.

Your rights when a bonus has wagering

The Commission's guidance on withdrawing your deposit (opens in a new tab) sets clear lines that protect you:

  • You can withdraw your deposit balance at any time, even while a bonus is active.
  • You can't be made to meet wagering requirements before withdrawing your own money.
  • Deposit and bonus balances must be shown separately, not as one pot.
  • Operators may require wagering on bonus winnings, but only within the 10x cap.

Withdrawing your deposit may mean giving up the bonus, so read the terms. If a bonus is removed and you don't know why, our answer on why a bonus was removed explains what an operator must tell you.

Bonuses come with conditions, and the house edge still applies while you wager. Never deposit more than you'd planned just to reach a bonus threshold.

  • Wagering cap: the UK rule limiting wagering to 10x the bonus.
  • Free spins: spin offers, which may or may not carry wagering on winnings.
  • Minimum deposit: the smallest deposit that qualifies for an offer.
  • House edge: the cost built into every wagered bet.

Frequently asked questions

What does 10x wagering mean?

It means you must place bets totalling 10 times the bonus amount before the bonus, or winnings from it, can be withdrawn. A £30 bonus at 10x needs £300 of stakes. Bets usually count only on eligible games, often slots, and must be placed within a time limit. Since 19 January 2026, 10x is the maximum a UK operator can set. Our page on the wagering cap explains the rule.

Does wagering apply to my deposit too?

Not under UK guidance. Operators must let you withdraw your deposit balance at any time, and they can't make you meet wagering before you take out your own money. Wagering can apply to bonus funds and winnings from them. Withdrawing your deposit may cancel an active bonus, so read the terms first. Our guide to reading casino app bonus terms shows what to look for.

Can I use a bonus with wagering on live casino or blackjack?

Usually only on restricted terms. Table games and live casino are often excluded from bonus play or count for less towards wagering, so a £10 bet might count as only part of that, or nothing. The offer's terms list which games count. Spin offers are for slots only. Our answer on whether you can use a bonus on live casino in the app gives more detail.

How do I work out if a bonus is worth it?

Multiply the total wagering by the house edge of the games you'll play, then compare that cost with the bonus. A £50 bonus at 10x on a 96% RTP slot needs £500 of stakes, with an expected cost of £20, leaving about £30 of expected value. Check the time limit, maximum bet and maximum winnings too, as they can make an offer harder to use. Our guide on how to claim a bonus in a casino app covers the steps.

What happens if I don't finish the wagering in time?

The remaining bonus balance, and any winnings tied to it, are normally removed when the time limit expires. Your own deposit balance stays yours. Time limits vary a lot: Casumo's offer allows 7 days and 10bet's allows 3 days, for example. If the deadline is short, a bonus may not suit how often you play. Our answer on whether free spins expire covers spin time limits too.

Is a no-wagering bonus better?

It's simpler, because winnings are paid as cash straight away with no stake target to meet. That makes its value easier to judge: 80 spins at 10p is £8 of spins, and what you win is yours to withdraw. It still has conditions, such as a minimum deposit, eligible games and expiry. Our answer to what no wagering means on a casino app explains the details.
