Casino app says I'm in the wrong location
Why does my casino app say I'm in the wrong location? Because real-money casino apps must block anyone outside the area their licence covers, and something about your connection or phone has made the app think you're outside it. A VPN, a network that routes traffic abroad, location services being off or genuinely being outside Britain are the usual causes.
Key takeaways
- Apple and Google both require real-money gambling apps to be restricted to the places they're licensed for.
- Neither store says how, so an app may check your network address, your phone's location, or both.
- Turning off a VPN or private relay and switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data fixes many false alarms.
- If you really are outside the licensed area, the block is the rule working, so don't try to get round it.
- Apple rule
- Guideline 5.3.4: geo-restricted to licensed locations
- Google rule
- Must block areas the licence doesn't cover
- Coral iOS label
- Coarse location, linked to you
- Ladbrokes iOS label
- Precise location, not linked to you
- UKGC rules cover
- Great Britain
What the casino app wrong location message means
A location error isn't a fault in the usual sense. It's a safety catch. A UK casino can only offer gambling where its licence allows, so the app checks where you seem to be before it lets you play. If the answer looks wrong, it stops you. The wording of the message varies from app to app.
The catch is that the check can be fooled by perfectly ordinary things, from a work laptop's hotspot to an iPhone privacy setting. Most of the time the fix takes a minute. For related questions about phones and apps, see our casino app questions hub.
Why casino apps check your location at all
The requirement comes from the app stores as well as the regulators. Apple's App Review Guidelines (opens in a new tab), section 5.3.4, say real-money gaming apps must have the necessary licensing in the places they're used and must be geo-restricted to those places. Google's real-money gambling policy (opens in a new tab) says apps must block access from countries or areas the developer's licence doesn't cover.
In Britain, the licence comes from the Gambling Commission, and its rules cover Great Britain. An app built for that licence has to keep people outside it out. Our guide to how casino apps are licensed in the UK explains the licence itself, and why a casino app needs your location covers the reasons in more detail.
How a casino app works out where you are
Neither Apple nor Google says exactly how an app must check location. An app might look at your internet address, use your phone's location services, or combine the two. We couldn't find an operator help page that explains the method for any of our partners, so the clearest public clue is the privacy label each app shows in its store listing.
| App | Platform | What the listing says |
|---|---|---|
| Coral Casino | iPhone | Coarse location, linked to you |
| Ladbrokes Casino | iPhone | Precise location, not linked to you |
| PlayOJO | iPhone | "This app may use your location even when it is not open, which can decrease device battery life." |
| Casumo | Android | Data safety section says the app may share location |
| 10bet | Android | Data safety section says the app may collect location |
You can read Coral's label yourself on its App Store listing (opens in a new tab), and PlayOJO's location note on its App Store page (opens in a new tab). What coarse and precise location mean is explained in do casino apps track your location, and our geolocation glossary entry gives the short version.
Common reasons a casino app thinks you're in the wrong location
A VPN or private relay is switched on
A VPN sends your traffic through a server that may be in another country, so to the casino you seem to be there. Some phone privacy features that hide your internet address can have a similar effect. This is the most common cause of a false alarm. Our guide to casino apps and VPNs explains why operators treat VPNs cautiously.
Location services are off for the app
If an app relies on your phone's location and you've said no to the permission, or set it to never, the app can't confirm where you are. It may then refuse to load games rather than guess.
Your network routes traffic elsewhere
Office networks, some hotel and travel Wi-Fi, and mobile hotspots shared from a work device can send traffic through other countries. Switching to your own mobile data is a quick test.
You're near a border or travelling
If you're on a ferry, close to a border, or have just arrived back from abroad, your phone or network may still report the old location for a while. Using a casino app while abroad is covered separately.
You're outside the area the operator serves
Sometimes the message is simply right. The Gambling Commission licenses gambling in Great Britain, and each operator decides where else it accepts customers. If you're on holiday in a country the operator doesn't serve, the app is meant to stop you.
How to fix a wrong location error in a casino app
These steps apply when you're genuinely somewhere the operator serves and the app has got it wrong.
- Turn off any VPN, proxy or private relay service, then close and reopen the app.
- Switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data, or the other way round, to rule out the network.
- Check the app's location permission in your phone's settings. If it's set to never, choose the option that allows it while you're using the app.
- Make sure location services are on for the phone as a whole.
- Update the app and your phone's software, then restart the phone.
- Log in again and try a game.
- If the error stays, contact the casino's support team with a screenshot and tell them where you are and which network you're on.
Our guide to casino app permissions shows where each permission lives on iPhone and Android. If the app won't open at all rather than showing a location message, the checklist for why won't my casino app load is a better place to start.
Don't try to get round a location block
If you're outside the licensed area, using a VPN or other tool to look as though you're in Britain isn't a fix. It works against the controls the operator must have under its licence and the store's rules, and it can put you in breach of the casino's terms. Check those terms for what the operator can do with an account or winnings in that case.
A location block also isn't the right tool if you want to stop gambling. If that's what you're after, GAMSTOP, bank gambling blocks and blocking software work everywhere you take your phone. Our self-exclusion from casino apps guide explains each option.
Wrong location messages in Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland isn't part of Great Britain, and the Gambling Commission's rules cover Great Britain. Northern Ireland has its own law, the Betting, Gaming, Lotteries and Amusements (NI) Order 1985, overseen by the Department for Communities (opens in a new tab), and it has no full online gambling framework of its own.
In practice, operators make their own decisions about customers there, and offers can differ. PlayOJO's welcome offer, for example, excludes new players in Northern Ireland. If you live there, check each app's terms before you sign up. Our answer to can I play casino apps in Northern Ireland covers this in full.
| Where you are | Regulator for online casino | What to expect from a UK casino app |
|---|---|---|
| England, Scotland or Wales | Gambling Commission | Should load once location checks pass |
| Northern Ireland | No full online framework; Department for Communities oversees NI law | Depends on the operator's terms; some offers exclude NI |
| Republic of Ireland | Ireland's own regime, separate from the Commission | Only if the operator is permitted there; otherwise blocked |
| Elsewhere abroad | Local law | Usually blocked unless the operator holds permission there |

Frequently asked questions
Why does my casino app think I'm abroad when I'm in the UK?
Usually because your connection looks as if it comes from elsewhere. A VPN, a privacy feature that hides your internet address, or a work or hotel network that routes traffic abroad are the common culprits. Turn those off, switch to mobile data and reopen the app. If location services are off for the app, turn them on while using it. There's more on why VPNs trigger blocks in our casino apps and VPNs guide.
Do casino apps use GPS to check where I am?
Some may, but there's no single method. Apple and Google require real-money apps to be geo-restricted, without saying how, so an app might use your internet address, your phone's location services or both. Store privacy labels give clues. Ladbrokes' iPhone listing mentions precise location, while Coral's mentions coarse location. Our page on whether casino apps can see your location explains what each level reveals.
Do I need location services on to use a casino app?
It depends on the app. If it uses your phone's location to confirm you're in Britain, it may not let you play with location turned off. Phones let you grant location only while an app is in use, so try that setting first. Check the permission in your phone's settings and choose the least access that lets the app work. The options on iPhone and Android are set out in casino app permissions explained.
Can I use a VPN to fix a casino app location error?
No, a VPN is more likely to cause the error than fix it. If you're in Britain, turning the VPN off usually solves the problem. If you're abroad, using a VPN to appear British works against the operator's licence controls and the app store rules, and can breach the casino's terms. Our page on whether you can use a VPN with a casino app covers the risks.
Why does my casino app say it's not available in my region on holiday?
Because it isn't licensed where you are. A UK casino app is built for the Gambling Commission's licence, which covers Great Britain, and app store rules require it to block other areas unless the operator holds permission there. You can usually still log in on your return. Withdrawals and account questions can go to support. Read can I use a casino app abroad before you travel.
Will a wrong location message affect my balance?
No, a location block stops play but doesn't take money from your account. Your balance is held by the operator and will be there when the app recognises your location again. If you need to withdraw while the app is blocking you, contact support through the casino's website. The usual process and timings are in how to withdraw from a casino app.
Does the wrong location message happen in Northern Ireland?
It can, depending on the operator. The Gambling Commission's rules cover Great Britain, and Northern Ireland has its own separate law with no full online framework. Each operator decides how it treats customers there, and some offers exclude Northern Ireland, PlayOJO's welcome offer among them. Check the terms of any app before signing up. Our answer on using a UK casino app in Ireland covers the Republic.
Does a casino app track my location all the time?
Not necessarily, but check the listing. Apple and Google don't say when or how often an app must check, so it varies. PlayOJO's App Store listing says it may use your location even when it isn't open, which can affect battery life. You can limit this by setting the permission to while using the app. Our guide on casino apps and battery life explains the knock-on effect.
