Chaos Crew slot overview

Hacksaw Gaming launched in September 2018 and is now part of Hacksaw AB, listed on Nasdaq Stockholm since June 2025. Chaos Crew, released in 2020, was one of its early slots, and a sequel, Chaos Crew 2, followed in 2023.

The game uses a square 5x5 grid with 15 paylines and is built on just two ideas: wilds with multipliers, and a bonus that stacks multipliers above the reels. It’s easy to learn, but the 5 out of 5 volatility rating means the results are anything but steady.

How the features work in Chaos Crew

Cranky Cat wilds and multiplying multipliers

The Cranky Cat is the wild. It substitutes to help form wins on the 15 paylines, and each one carries a multiplier of 2x, 3x or 5x. When more than one Cranky Cat forms part of the same win, their multipliers are multiplied together rather than added.

That difference is what gives the base game its punch. Adding 3x and 5x would give 8x; multiplying them gives 15x.

How Cranky Cat multipliers combine in one win (worked examples)
Wilds in the winCalculationTotal multiplierOn a 40p line win
One 2x22x80p
One 5x55x£2.00
3x and 5x3 × 515x£6.00
2x, 3x and 5x2 × 3 × 530x£12.00
Two 5x5 × 525x£10.00

The 40p line win is a made-up example to show the arithmetic. What a line pays depends on the symbols and your stake, which the paytable sets out.

The bonus: a multiplier above every reel

Three scatters start the bonus. It begins with three spins. Each time a multiplier symbol lands, the spin count resets to three, and that symbol either adds to or multiplies the multiplier sitting above its reel. When the spins finally run out, the five reel multipliers are added together and the total is paid as a multiple of your stake.

A Chaos Crew bonus round, step by step

Here’s how a bonus round unfolds, using made-up numbers to show the arithmetic. Your own rounds will differ.

  1. Three scatters land and the bonus starts with three spins, with a multiplier position above each of the five reels.
  2. A multiplier symbol lands on reel 2. The count resets to three and reel 2’s multiplier builds up.
  3. Over later spins, more multiplier symbols land on reels 2, 4 and 5, each resetting the count and either adding to or multiplying the value above that reel.
  4. Three spins pass with no new multiplier symbol, so the round ends.
  5. The reel multipliers are added together, for example 0x + 12x + 0x + 6x + 4x = 22x.
  6. That total is paid as a multiple of your stake: 22x at a 50p stake is £11.

Because the final payout is a sum of reel multipliers, rounds that only touch one or two reels tend to be small. The large outcomes come when a multiply step lands on a reel that already has a high value.

Chaos Crew RTP and volatility: what you pay per hour

The RTP is 96.30%, so the house edge is 3.70%. Multiply any amount you stake by 3.70% to get the average cost. Hacksaw rates the volatility 5 out of 5, its top band, so most sessions will land some distance from that average.

This table assumes 450 spins in an hour, an illustrative pace. UK rules cap the rate at 1,440 spins an hour through the 2.5-second minimum.

Average cost of 450 Chaos Crew spins at 96.30% RTP
StakeTotal stakedAverage loss (3.70%)
10p£45£1.67
50p£225£8.33
£1£450£16.65
£5 (25+ maximum)£2,250£83.25

A £20 budget lasts 200 spins at 10p, 40 at 50p and 20 at £1. In every case the average loss on that £20 is 74p, but with a 5 out of 5 game the chance of finishing a short session with nothing is high, so the 10p option gives you the most play.

Chaos Crew max win in pounds

Payouts are capped at 10,000x your stake: £1,000 at 10p, £5,000 at 50p, £10,000 at £1, £20,000 at £2 and £50,000 at £5.

As the bonus pays the sum of the reel multipliers as a multiple of stake, the cap is a hard ceiling on that total. Reaching it is very rare.

Playing the Chaos Crew slot on iPhone and Android

There’s no Chaos Crew app to download. If the game is in your casino app’s lobby, it runs inside that app, with the same account and balance you use on the mobile site.

A square 5x5 grid fits a phone screen better than a wide 6-reel layout, and in the bonus each reel’s multiplier sits directly above that reel, so you can see which reels are building. Whether the game opens in portrait or landscape depends on the build and the casino; our portrait vs landscape guide explains more.

  • Only install casino apps from the official App Store or Google Play listing. See Android phones and iPhone.
  • Game outcomes are settled on the casino’s server, so a signal drop won’t change a result.
  • Keep the app up to date so games continue to load properly; see how to update a casino app.

Since a Gambling Commission warning in January 2020, feature buy-ins are not offered to British players, so the bonus comes only from three scatters. Our slot stake limits page covers both caps.

Is Chaos Crew worth playing?

Advantages

  • Wild multipliers that multiply together give the base game real potential.
  • A simple bonus where the payout is easy to follow.
  • 96.30% RTP is above many mainstream slots.
  • The square 5x5 grid suits phone screens.

Drawbacks

  • 5 out of 5 volatility means long runs without much return.
  • Bonus rounds that touch only one or two reels pay little.
  • The sequel has a higher cap at a near-identical RTP.
  • No bonus buy in the UK, so access depends on scatters.

Chaos Crew suits players who like a game with few rules and big swings, played at a low stake from a fixed budget. Set a deposit limit first, and consider the sequel or other games in our slot reviews if you want to compare.

Frequently asked questions

What is the RTP of Chaos Crew?

Chaos Crew’s published RTP is 96.30%, which means a house edge of 3.70%. On average, that’s £3.70 lost for every £100 staked over a very long run, though individual sessions vary widely. A casino may offer a different version, so check the game’s info screen in your app. See our guide on how to find the RTP in a casino app.

How do Cranky Cat wild multipliers work?

Each Cranky Cat wild carries a 2x, 3x or 5x multiplier. If one wild is in a win, that multiplier applies. If several wilds are in the same win, their multipliers are multiplied together, so 3x and 5x give 15x, and 2x, 3x and 5x give 30x. Our multiplier glossary entry explains multipliers more generally.

How does the Chaos Crew bonus pay out?

The bonus starts with three spins. Multiplier symbols reset the count to three and add to or multiply the value above their reel. When the spins run out, the five reel multipliers are added together, and you’re paid that total as a multiple of your stake, so 22x at 50p would be £11. Our free spins guide explains bonus rounds versus offer spins.

What is the max win on Chaos Crew?

Chaos Crew caps wins at 10,000 times your stake. That’s £1,000 at 10p, £10,000 at £1 and £50,000 at the UK maximum of £5 per spin for players aged 25 and over. With 5 out of 5 volatility, results near the cap are very rare. Compare it with the 20,000x cap in our Chaos Crew 2 review.

Is Chaos Crew high volatility?

Yes. Hacksaw Gaming rates Chaos Crew 5 out of 5 for volatility, its highest band. That means long spells of small or no wins, with most of the return coming from occasional large results. Smaller stakes give your budget more spins to ride out those spells. Our explainer on slot volatility covers how to use the rating.

Who makes Chaos Crew?

Hacksaw Gaming makes Chaos Crew. The studio launched in September 2018, is headquartered in Malta, holds a Gambling Commission licence and is part of Hacksaw AB, listed on Nasdaq Stockholm since 25 June 2025. Its best-known slot is Wanted Dead or a Wild. Read more on our Hacksaw Gaming studio page.

Can I play Chaos Crew on my phone?

Yes, if your casino offers it. Chaos Crew runs inside casino apps and mobile browsers with no separate download, and its square 5x5 grid fits a phone screen well. Search the app’s game lobby to see if it’s there. Our guide to the best slot apps compares apps with large slot lobbies.

Is Chaos Crew 2 better than Chaos Crew?

It’s different rather than simply better. Chaos Crew 2 doubles the maximum win to 20,000x at a near-identical 96.27% RTP and keeps the 5 out of 5 volatility rating. The original has a slightly higher RTP at 96.30% and a simpler design. Both are very high risk, so budget the same way for either. See our slot reviews hub for more comparisons.
