What kind of slot is RIP City?
RIP City is a line slot on a bigger-than-usual grid: five reels, five rows and 19 fixed lines. Lines pay both ways, so a winning combination can start on the leftmost reel or the rightmost one.
It comes from Hacksaw Gaming, a studio launched in September 2018 and headquartered in Malta. Its parent, Hacksaw AB, has been listed on Nasdaq Stockholm since 25 June 2025, and the studio holds a Gambling Commission licence. Its best-known game is Wanted Dead or a Wild.

How the features work
The Cat Wild
The Cat Wild is the centrepiece. When it forms part of a winning line, it extends its jaw down the reel, and every position it covers turns wild. That can complete extra lines on the same spin.
If the stretching Cat Wild covers a regular wild on its way down, it gains a multiplier. So the more regular wilds sit in its path, the more a single stretch can be worth.
Ro$$ Bonus: three scatters
Three scatters trigger the Ro$$ Bonus: 10 free spins in which more Cat Wilds appear than in the base game.
Maxx Bonus: four scatters
Four scatters trigger the Maxx Bonus, also 10 free spins. Here, each Cat Wild that lands activates its reel, and from then on a Cat Wild appears on that reel on every remaining spin of the round. Activate several reels early and the round can build quickly.
| Round | Trigger | Spins | What changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ro$$ Bonus | 3 scatters | 10 | More Cat Wilds than the base game |
| Maxx Bonus | 4 scatters | 10 | Each Cat Wild activates its reel, so a Cat Wild lands there on every later spin |
Since a Gambling Commission warning in January 2020 (opens in a new tab), feature buy-ins are not offered to British players. On UK apps both rounds come only from landing scatters.
RIP City paylines: what “pays both ways” means
Many line slots only count matches that start on reel one. RIP City also counts matches that start on reel five and run leftwards. A symbol cluster across reels three, four and five can therefore pay, where it would be ignored in a one-direction game.
It sounds generous, but the paytable and RTP already account for it. Paying both ways is part of the game’s built-in maths, not an extra on top; the house edge is still 3.78%.
RIP City max win in pounds
The cap is 12,500× your stake, which is unusually high for a game rated medium volatility. In practice, hitting it needs a very rare combination of stretched Cat Wilds with large multipliers.
| Stake | Max win | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 10p | £1,250 | |
| 20p | £2,500 | |
| 50p | £6,250 | |
| £1 | £12,500 | |
| £2 | £25,000 | UK maximum stake for ages 18–24 |
| £5 | £62,500 | UK maximum stake for ages 25 and over |
Treat the cap as the top of the range, not a goal. Most sessions on any slot end with less than you started with.
RIP City RTP on a £20 budget
A 96.22% RTP means a 3.78% house edge: about £3.78 of every £100 staked, on average, over a very long run. Medium volatility sits between the frequent small wins of a low-volatility game and the long droughts of a high-volatility one.
| Stake | Spins if nothing returns | Total staked in 200 spins | Expected loss in 200 spins |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10p | 200 | £20 | £0.76 |
| 50p | 40 | £100 | £3.78 |
| £1 | 20 | £200 | £7.56 |
Expected loss is total staked × 3.78%. At 10p, 200 spins uses exactly £20 of stakes, with an expected cost of under £1, though the actual result will vary. At £1, the same £20 could be gone in 20 spins. Our house edge by game page puts slot costs in context with table games.
Playing RIP City on iPhone and Android
RIP City is an HTML5 game, so it runs in iOS and Android casino apps and in mobile browsers. A 5×5 grid has more symbols to fit than a 5×3 one, so a larger screen makes the Cat Wild stretches easier to follow.
- Make sure your account is fully verified; age checks apply even to demo play.
- Search the app’s lobby for “RIP City”. Hacksaw games aren’t in every UK lobby.
- Open the game’s information screen to check the RTP and read the bonus rules.
- Choose a stake within your budget and the UK limit for your age.
- Spin manually and use the app’s reality check or session reminder if it has one.
Compare partner apps on our best slot apps list. If the game stalls mid-spin, our guide to what happens if you lose signal during a spin explains how results are kept.
UK rules that affect RIP City
- £5 maximum stake per spin for ages 25 and over and £2 for ages 18 to 24, set out in the Gambling Commission’s online slots stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab).
- A minimum of 2.5 seconds per spin, with no autoplay, turbo or slam stop, under the responsible product design standard (opens in a new tab).
- No celebrating a result that returns your stake or less.
- Net spend and time played displayed in real time.
- No bonus buy for British players.
Our game design rules page covers each rule in turn, and the stake limits page explains the two age bands.

- Le Bandit: medium volatility on a 6×5 grid with a 10,000× cap.
- Chaos Crew: 5×5 and rated 5 of 5 for volatility, so a much rougher ride.

Advantages
- Lines pay both ways on a 5×5 grid

Frequently asked questions
What is the RTP of RIP City?
RIP City has a published RTP of 96.22%, giving a house edge of 3.78%. Over a very large number of spins, that is about £3.78 lost per £100 staked, but short sessions vary widely. Apps don’t cut RTP by default; check the figure in the game’s information screen. For the steps, read how to find a game’s RTP in an app.
What is the max win on RIP City?
The maximum win on RIP City is 12,500× your stake. That is £1,250 at 10p and £12,500 at £1. With the UK stake limits, the highest possible figure is £62,500 at £5 for players aged 25 and over, and £25,000 at £2 for players aged 18 to 24. Reaching the cap is extremely rare. See our page on slot stake limits.
How does the Cat Wild work in RIP City?
When a Cat Wild is part of a winning line, it extends its jaw down its reel and turns every position it covers wild. That can create more winning lines on the same spin. If it covers a regular wild on the way down, it picks up a multiplier. The help screen in the game sets out the exact values. Our multiplier glossary entry explains the general idea.
What is the difference between the Ro$$ Bonus and the Maxx Bonus?
Both give 10 free spins, but they are triggered differently and play differently. Three scatters start the Ro$$ Bonus, which adds more Cat Wilds. Four scatters start the Maxx Bonus, where each Cat Wild that lands activates its reel so a Cat Wild appears there on every later spin. Our guide to free spins in casino apps explains how in-game spins differ from offers.
Can you buy the bonus on RIP City in the UK?
No. Feature buy-ins are not offered to British players since a Gambling Commission warning in January 2020, so UK apps show RIP City without a bonus buy button. Both bonus rounds come only from landing scatters during normal spins. Our page on game design rules covers the other UK differences, such as no autoplay.
Is RIP City high volatility?
No, RIP City is rated medium volatility, 3 on Hacksaw’s 5-point scale. Wins should arrive more evenly than in high-volatility games like Chaos Crew, though the 12,500× cap shows that big swings are still possible. A £20 budget covers 200 spins at 10p if nothing comes back. Read what volatility means on a slot app.
Who makes RIP City?
RIP City is made by Hacksaw Gaming, a studio launched in September 2018 and based in Malta. Its parent company, Hacksaw AB, is listed on Nasdaq Stockholm, and the studio holds a Gambling Commission licence to supply games in Great Britain. Its best-known slot is Wanted Dead or a Wild. See our Hacksaw Gaming slots page.
Does RIP City work on mobile?
Yes. RIP City is built in HTML5 and plays in iPhone and Android casino apps and in phone browsers. The 5×5 grid holds more symbols than a standard slot, so a larger screen helps. Not every app carries Hacksaw games, so search the lobby before you sign up. See how the partner apps stack up in our best casino apps for iPhone ranking.
