Cygnus slot overview
Cygnus was released in 2019 by ELK Studios, the Stockholm studio founded in 2013 and licensed by the Gambling Commission under account 40844. It is one of the titles most associated with ELK’s Avalanche and Free Drops mechanics.
The idea is simple to state: each time symbols win and vanish, the grid gets taller. Start on four rows, keep winning in the same spin, and you can reach eight. That turns a modest 4,096-way grid into one with 262,144 ways.

How the features work in the Cygnus slot
Avalanches that grow the grid
When a win forms in Cygnus, the winning symbols are removed and new ones fall in, which ELK calls an avalanche. Each avalanche also adds one row to the grid, so the next drop has more positions and more ways to win. Growth stops at eight rows.
Multiplier symbols
Multiplier symbols can land during a spin. Each one raises a win multiplier, and that multiplier stays in effect for the rest of the spin. A long chain of avalanches can therefore combine a bigger grid with a higher multiplier.
Free Drops
The Free Drops bonus begins when a Bonus symbol reaches the leftmost column. You then get 7 free drops played on the fully expanded grid, so every drop starts at eight rows and 262,144 ways. Any multipliers that were active when the bonus began stay in place for the whole round instead of resetting.
How the Bonus symbol makes its way to the left column, and the values the multiplier symbols can add, are explained in the game’s help screen. Read it there, since we only describe what the published feature summary covers.
Since a Gambling Commission warning in January 2020, feature buy-ins are not offered to British players. In a UK app, Free Drops only start through normal play.
Cygnus ways to win at each grid size
On a six-reel grid, the number of ways is the number of rows multiplied by itself six times. That is why each added row makes such a big difference. The table shows the plain arithmetic.
| Rows | Calculation | Ways to win | How you get there |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 4 × 4 × 4 × 4 × 4 × 4 | 4,096 | Every spin starts here |
| 5 | 5 to the power 6 | 15,625 | After one winning avalanche |
| 6 | 6 to the power 6 | 46,656 | After two |
| 7 | 7 to the power 6 | 117,649 | After three |
| 8 | 8 to the power 6 | 262,144 | After four, and at the start of every free drop |
More ways doesn’t mean better value per spin. The 96.1% RTP already includes everything the growing grid can do. What growth changes is the shape of results: a spin with no win stays at four rows, while a spin with a chain of wins can reach the bigger grids.
For comparison, a fixed-line game such as Ancient Fortunes: Zeus pays on 10 lines in both directions, and Megaways games reach 117,649 ways with six reels of up to seven symbols. Our Megaways glossary entry explains that format.
Cygnus RTP and a £20 budget at 10p, 50p and £1
With a 96.1% RTP, the house edge is 3.9%. Any £20 of stakes costs 78p on average over the long run. The table shows how many spins £20 buys and the average cost of a 1,000-spin stretch at each stake.
| Stake | Spins from £20 with no returns | Total staked in 1,000 spins | Average cost of 1,000 spins |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10p | 200 | £100 | £3.90 |
| 50p | 40 | £500 | £19.50 |
| £1 | 20 | £1,000 | £39.00 |
Medium–high volatility sits between steady and swingy. Results tend to be less extreme than on games rated at the very top of the scale, but the larger ones still depend on long chains and the Free Drops round.
- Pick a budget you’re comfortable losing, for example £20.
- Divide it by the stake to see how many spins you have: £20 at 10p is 200 spins.
- Check the RTP in the game’s rules once it loads in your app.
- Use the real-time net spend display in your app to track the session.
- Stop at your limit. A near-miss chain doesn’t make the next spin more likely to grow.
Playing Cygnus on a phone or tablet
Cygnus is played inside a licensed casino app or mobile browser, opened from the slot lobby. You won’t find it as its own listing in the App Store or Google Play.
Because the grid changes height mid-spin, from four rows to eight, the symbols shrink as the grid grows. On a small phone that can make an eight-row grid hard to read. ELK doesn’t publish orientation details for Cygnus, so try both ways; a tablet gives more room, and our guide to casino apps on iPad covers the bigger-screen option.
Chained avalanches mean one paid spin can involve several drops. UK rules require at least 2.5 seconds per spin, and the extra drops add to that, so sessions move more slowly than on a basic five-reel game.
UK rules that apply to Cygnus
- Online slot stakes are limited to £5 per spin for over-25s and £2 for 18–24s. See our slot stake limits explainer.
- Each spin lasts at least 2.5 seconds; no turbo or slam-stop.
- No autoplay, under the autoplay ban.
- No feature buy-ins for British players since January 2020.
- A spin that returns your stake or less can’t be presented with win effects.
The Commission’s responsible product design standard (opens in a new tab) holds the game design rules, and the online slots stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab) covers the caps. At £5, 5,000× would be £25,000; at 10p it is £500.
Cygnus and other ELK Studios slots

Cygnus slot review: verdict

Frequently asked questions
What is the RTP of Cygnus?
Cygnus has a published RTP of 96.1%, giving a house edge of 3.9%. That means an average cost of £3.90 for every £100 staked over the long run, though any single session can differ widely. Check the figure in the game’s help screen in your app before playing. Our guide to finding a game’s RTP in an app shows where it usually appears.
How does the Cygnus grid grow?
The Cygnus grid grows by one row each time a winning avalanche removes symbols. It starts at six reels and four rows, with 4,096 ways, and can reach eight rows with 262,144 ways within a single spin. The extra ways don’t change the RTP; they change how wins are spread. Our Nitropolis review covers another ELK game that starts on the same 6×4 grid.
How do you trigger Free Drops in Cygnus?
Free Drops start when a Bonus symbol reaches the leftmost column of the grid. You get 7 free drops on the fully expanded eight-row grid, and any multipliers active at the start stay in place for the whole round. UK players can’t buy the feature, as feature buy-ins aren’t offered to British players. See our game design rules page for related rules.
What is the max win on Cygnus?
The maximum win on Cygnus is 5,000 times your stake. That is £500 at 10p, £5,000 at £1 and £25,000 at the £5 cap for players aged 25 and over. It’s a ceiling that very few spins approach, and losses are the likely outcome over time. Compare published caps across ELK games on our ELK Studios slots page.
Is Cygnus a high volatility slot?
Cygnus is rated medium–high volatility, which sits between steady low-volatility games and very swingy ones. Larger results depend on long avalanche chains and the Free Drops bonus, so some sessions will pass without either. At 10p a spin, £20 gives you 200 spins, compared with 20 at £1. Choose a stake that gives your budget enough spins. Our explainer on volatility in slot apps helps match a game to your budget.
How do the multipliers work in Cygnus?
Multiplier symbols raise a win multiplier that stays active for the rest of the spin, so later avalanche wins in the same spin benefit from it. In Free Drops, any multipliers already active stay in place for the whole round. The exact values each symbol adds are shown in the game’s paytable. For a general explanation, see our multiplier glossary entry.
Who makes the Cygnus slot?
Cygnus is made by ELK Studios, founded in 2013 and based in Stockholm, Sweden. ELK holds a Gambling Commission licence (account 40844) and a Malta licence, and its catalogue includes more than 120 slots. It is known for Avalanche and Free Drops mechanics and for the Wild Toro and Pirots series. Read more on our ELK Studios page.
Can I play Cygnus on my phone?
Yes, Cygnus plays inside UK casino apps on iPhone and Android and in mobile browsers, opened from a licensed casino’s slot lobby. Because the grid grows to eight rows, symbols get smaller, so a larger screen or landscape view can help. A tablet is another option. Our best casino apps for tablets list compares apps on bigger screens.
