Multiplier: meaning in casino games
A multiplier is a feature that multiplies a win by a set factor: a 3x multiplier turns a £2 win into £6. In slots, multipliers often ride on wilds, cascades or free spins, and in live games they're attached to numbers or wheel segments at random. They raise individual wins, but the game's RTP already accounts for them, so they don't make it cheaper to play.
Key takeaways
- A multiplier scales a win: a 5x multiplier on a £2 win pays £10.
- Some games add several multipliers together; others multiply them, which grows much faster.
- Multipliers are paid for elsewhere in the game, often through lower base payouts.
- Lightning Roulette's straight-up bet pays 29:1 instead of 35:1 to fund its 50x to 500x boosts.
- A multiplier never changes the house edge you see in the game's RTP.

What a multiplier is
A multiplier takes a win and multiplies it. The slot features guide on casinos.com (opens in a new tab) uses the simplest example: a 5x multiplier turns a $2 win into $10. In pounds, a 5x multiplier on a £2 win pays £10. The multiplier only works on a win, so a 5x on a spin that wins nothing still pays nothing.
Multipliers appear in almost every modern slot and in many live games. How they're triggered, how big they get and whether they combine are set game by game, so one game's range tells you nothing about another's. More definitions are in our casino app glossary.
Types of multiplier in slots and live games
| Type | How it works | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Wild multiplier | A wild applies its value to any win it helps form | Wanted Dead or a Wild: VS wilds carry 2x to 100x, and several are added together |
| Combining wild multipliers | Several wild multipliers multiply each other | Iron Bank: full-reel wilds of 2x to 10x multiply together |
| Cascade or progressive multiplier | Rises with each consecutive win in one sequence | Esqueleto Explosivo: rises with each explosion, up to 32x |
| Position multiplier | A grid spot gains a multiplier that grows with repeat wins | Sugar Rush 1000: starts at x2 and doubles up to x1,024 |
| Free spins multiplier | Grows during a bonus round and may not reset | Rainbow Riches Megaways: rises by one with each cascade |
| Live game multiplier | Randomly attached to a number or segment before the result | Lightning Roulette: 50x to 500x on one to five Lucky Numbers |
Full details are in our reviews of Wanted Dead or a Wild, Sugar Rush 1000 and Rainbow Riches Megaways. Live game multipliers are covered in our game show entry.
Added or multiplied: why it matters
When two multipliers land in the same win, the game's rules decide whether they're added or multiplied. The difference is large, so it's worth reading the paytable.
Say you stake 50p, a winning line pays 4x stake (£2), and two wilds with 2x and 5x multipliers are part of it:
- Added together (as in Wanted Dead or a Wild): 2 + 5 = 7x, so £2 becomes £14.
- Multiplied together (as in Iron Bank's wilds or Hand of Anubis's Soul Orbs in one cluster): 2 × 5 = 10x, so £2 becomes £20.
- With three wilds of 2x, 5x and 10x, adding gives 17x (£34), while multiplying gives 100x (£200).
Games that multiply multipliers tend to be very volatile, because the rare big combinations have to be paid for with long stretches of small or no wins. Our volatility entry explains how that feels on a small budget.
How multipliers are paid for
A multiplier isn't extra money from nowhere. The game's RTP already includes every multiplier it can award, and to make room, the developer pays less somewhere else.
Lightning Roulette is the clearest case. Evolution's Lightning Roulette page (opens in a new tab) says one to five Lucky Numbers get multipliers of 50x to 500x each round, but an unboosted straight-up bet pays 29:1. A £1 straight-up win on a normal number returns £30, against £36 at standard European roulette. You only come out ahead of the standard game when your number is a Lucky Number.
Some live games charge for the multiplier directly. Lightning Blackjack adds a 100% Lightning fee to each initial bet, and Lightning Baccarat charges a 20% fee. Either way, the house edge is still there. Read more on our Lightning Roulette page.
Where you meet multipliers in casino apps
In a slot, a multiplier usually shows as a number on a wild, a meter beside the reels or a value on a grid square. In live games, it flashes onto a number, card or segment before the result. Either way, the rules and payouts must be available in the game's help screen before you play.
- Open the slot or live game and tap the info or paytable icon.
- Find the section on multipliers and note whether they add or multiply.
- Check whether the multiplier resets after each spin or carries on through free spins.
- Note the RTP, which already includes the multipliers, and set your stake to suit your budget.
UK design rules also shape how wins are shown. Since 31 October 2021, a slot can't celebrate a return equal to or less than your stake, even if a multiplier was involved, and slots can't offer turbo or autoplay. See our game design rules page.

Frequently asked questions
What is a multiplier in slots?
A multiplier in a slot is a feature that multiplies a win by a fixed factor, such as 2x, 5x or 100x. It often sits on a wild symbol, grows with each cascade, or builds during free spins. The RTP already includes it, so it doesn't make the game cheaper. Our mobile slots guide explains common features, and the Big Bass Bonanza review shows a collect multiplier in action.
Do multipliers add or multiply together?
It depends on the game: some add multipliers together, while others multiply them. In Wanted Dead or a Wild, VS wild multipliers are added, while Iron Bank's wild multipliers multiply together. With 2x and 5x, adding gives 7x and multiplying gives 10x, and the gap widens quickly with more wilds. The paytable explains which applies. See our Iron Bank review and our paytable definition.
Do multipliers improve my chances of winning?
No, multipliers change the size of some wins, not the overall return. The developer builds every possible multiplier into the published RTP and usually lowers other payouts to pay for them. Lightning Roulette, for example, pays 29:1 on a normal straight-up win instead of 35:1. Losses are still likely over time. Read our house edge entry and can you win real money on casino apps.
What is the biggest multiplier in live casino?
It varies by game and isn't a single figure. Evolution says XXXtreme Lightning Roulette's Double Strike multipliers reach up to 2,000x, Super Sic Bo can apply up to 1,000x, and Crazy Time's Top Slot adds up to 50x before the wheel spins. These are ceilings, reached rarely, and the edge is unchanged. See XXXtreme Lightning Roulette and Crazy Time for the rules.
Are multipliers allowed under UK slot rules?
Yes, multipliers are allowed in UK slots; the rules focus on speed and presentation rather than features like this. Since 31 October 2021 slots can't offer autoplay or turbo, must allow 2.5 seconds per spin and can't celebrate a return equal to or less than your stake. Stakes are capped at £5 a spin, or £2 for 18 to 24-year-olds. See game design rules and slot stake limits.
Can I use free spins on slots with multipliers?
Yes, if the slot is one the offer names, the game's multipliers work normally during free spins. PlayOJO's 80 free spins are on Big Bass Bonanza, which has a fish value multiplier in its bonus round, while Coral's and Ladbrokes' spins are on selected slots. All are 10p a spin and need £10 of deposit or slot play. 18+ and terms apply. See free spins in casino apps and our PlayOJO welcome bonus page.
