ELK Studios slots on mobile

ELK Studios slots on mobile are known for grids that grow, birds that collect gems and wilds that walk across the reels. The Stockholm studio holds a Gambling Commission licence, and its games run inside UK casino apps. Here is how its main titles work, what their RTPs and max wins mean in pounds, and what to check on your phone.

Key takeaways

  • ELK Studios was founded in 2013 in Stockholm and holds Gambling Commission account 40844.
  • Its signature ideas are avalanches, Free Drops and walking wilds; the Pirots series swaps paylines for collecting birds.
  • Published RTPs range from 94% (the Pirots games and Reindeer Royale) to 96.4% (Wild Toro).
  • On £100 staked, a 94% game costs £6 on average and a 96.4% game £3.60.
  • Big max wins such as 10,000× are caps, not likely outcomes.

ELK Studios slots on mobile: what sets them apart

ELK Studios builds slots that rarely look like a standard five-reel game. Grids expand during a spin, symbols drop in from above, and in the Pirots series four birds wander around the board collecting gems. Those moving parts make ELK games distinctive, and they also make screen size more noticeable than with a classic 5x3 slot.

On a phone, the games load inside your casino app like any other HTML5 slot. You don't install anything from ELK itself, and the maths is the same as on desktop.

This page belongs to our slot providers section. If you like ELK's style, the Nolimit City and Hacksaw Gaming pages cover studios with similarly busy, high-volatility designs.

ELK Studios licence and company details

ELK was founded in 2013 and is based in Stockholm. It trades through two licensed companies, ELKAB Studios AB and ELK Studios Malta Ltd, and supplies British casinos under Gambling Commission account 40844. You can look up any supplier's account on the Commission's public register of businesses (opens in a new tab).

A supplier licence matters because the casino app is not the only party responsible for a game's fairness. The studio that builds the game and its random number generator has to meet the Commission's technical standards too. Our guide to how casino apps are licensed in the UK explains the operator side.

ELK Studios games on mobile: RTP, volatility and max win

These are the ELK titles with verified specifications. Notice how many sit at 94%: that is a design choice across the Pirots series and Reindeer Royale, and it is lower than many slots from other studios.

Our full reviews cover Wild Toro, Cygnus, Nitropolis, Pirots and Pirots 2. Casinos can run different RTP versions of some games, so the in-game help screen is the final word.

How Pirots works: birds instead of paylines

Pirots has no paylines. Four coloured parrots sit on a 5x5 grid and move around it, collecting neighbouring gems of their own colour. Wilds, upgrades, transforms, coins and bombs add to the action, and each collected symbol fills a feature meter. The grid can grow to 8x8.

Collect three bonus symbols and you get five Free Drops. During them, the grid size, symbol collection and gem levels carry over from one drop to the next, and three more bonus symbols add extra drops.

Pirots 2 starts on a bigger 6x6 grid, again growing to 8x8. Feature symbols upgrade gem values, award coin prizes, expand the board or shuffle the birds, and three Dino Skull scatters in a round give 5 Free Drops. Pirots 3 moves to an 8x7 grid with reel expansions and a coin bonus.

Every Pirots game has a published RTP of 94%. The collecting mechanic is fun to watch, but it does not change the long-run cost: about £6 of every £100 staked is kept on average.

Avalanches and growing grids in Cygnus and Nitropolis

Cygnus starts on six reels of four rows, giving 4,096 ways to win. Each win removes the winning symbols in an avalanche and adds a row, up to 8 rows and 262,144 ways. Multiplier symbols raise a win multiplier that lasts for the rest of the spin.

Its Free Drops round starts when a bonus symbol reaches the leftmost column. You get 7 free drops on the fully expanded grid, and any multipliers already active stay for the whole round.

Nitro Reels in Nitropolis

Nitropolis uses Nitro Reels, which can appear on any reel and pack several matching symbols into one position. That pushes the ways to win from 4,096 up to as many as 85,155,840. Wins trigger respins for as long as new wins land. Three to six scatters give 10 to 25 free spins, with a random symbol becoming a scatter-paying symbol and every Nitro Reel locked in place.

Ways-to-win games are explained in our Megaways glossary entry, which covers the related idea of reels that change height.

Walking wilds in Wild Toro

Wild Toro, released in 2016, is built around respins rather than a free spins round. A Toro wild landing on reel 5 becomes a walking wild and moves one reel to the left with each respin.

If the Matador appears, the bull charges at him and leaves a trail of extra wilds. Matador symbols on reels 2, 3 and 4 also trigger sticky respins, and each new Matador adds another respin.

At 96.4% RTP and a 2,250× maximum, Wild Toro is the most conservative ELK game in our table. It suits players who prefer more modest swings over a chase for a very large top prize.

What the RTP gap costs in pounds

Expected loss is the amount staked × (100% − RTP). It is a long-run average, so a short session can come in well above or below it, especially on high-volatility games.

Expected loss on £100 staked
SlotRTPCalculationExpected loss
Wild Toro96.4%£100 × 3.6%£3.60
Cygnus or Nitropolis96.1%£100 × 3.9%£3.90
Any Pirots game or Reindeer Royale94%£100 × 6%£6.00

£100 of turnover comes round faster than you might expect. At 50p a spin it takes just 200 spins, so a long evening on a 94% game costs roughly two-thirds more, on average, than the same session on Wild Toro.

Reading ELK's max wins

A max win is a cap on what one spin or round can pay, not a likely result. At a 10p stake, 10,000× is £1,000; at the UK maximum of £5 for players aged 25 and over, the same cap is £50,000. Reindeer Royale's 25,000× works out at £2,500 on a 10p spin. Very few sessions ever get close to these figures.

Playing ELK Studios games on a phone

ELK's expanding grids are where screen size starts to matter. A 5x3 slot is easy to read on any phone, but an 8x8 Pirots board or a Cygnus grid at eight rows packs many symbols into a small space.

  1. Open the casino app on Wi-Fi or a strong mobile signal, since the game streams in when you start it.
  2. Search the lobby for the game name, such as Cygnus or Pirots, rather than for ELK.
  3. Read the help screen before your first spin to check the RTP and how the features work.
  4. Rotate your phone to see whether the game offers a larger layout in landscape or portrait; this varies by game.
  5. Set your stake and a deposit limit, and keep an eye on the net spend and time display that UK rules require.

If text or symbols feel too small, a tablet gives the grid more room. Our phone vs tablet comparison weighs up the trade-offs, and the Android phones guide covers installing casino apps on Android.

UK rules for ELK Studios slots in British apps

Games for British players follow the Commission's remote technical standards for product design (opens in a new tab). Since 31 October 2021, slots can't offer autoplay, turbo or slam-stop, must take at least 2.5 seconds per spin and must not celebrate a return equal to or below your stake.

Some features in ELK games may differ from the versions sold in other countries. In particular, since a Gambling Commission warning in January 2020, feature buy-ins are not offered to British players. The Commission's games warning for online operators (opens in a new tab) explains the background.

Stakes are capped at £5 a spin for players aged 25 and over and £2 for 18 to 24-year-olds. Our explainer on why there is no autoplay on UK casino apps covers how these rules change what you see on screen.

Frequently asked questions

Is ELK Studios licensed in the UK?

Yes, ELK Studios supplies British casinos under Gambling Commission account 40844. It operates through ELKAB Studios AB and ELK Studios Malta Ltd, and also holds a Malta Gaming Authority licence issued in February 2019. A supplier licence sits alongside the casino operator's own licence, and both must meet the Commission's standards. Our guide to how casino apps are licensed explains how the two fit together.

What is the RTP of Pirots?

Pirots has a published RTP of 94%, the same as Pirots 2 and Pirots 3. That means about £6 of every £100 staked is kept by the game on average over the long run, which is more than many slots that pay around 96%. Some casinos run different versions of games, so check the help screen before you play. Our Pirots review explains the bird-collecting mechanic in full.

Which ELK Studios slot has the highest RTP?

Wild Toro has the highest published RTP of the ELK games we have verified, at 96.4%. Cygnus and Nitropolis follow at 96.1%, while the Pirots series and Reindeer Royale sit at 94%. A higher RTP lowers the average cost over many spins, but it cannot predict a single session. For other studios' high-RTP games, see our list of the best high-RTP casino apps.

What are Free Drops in ELK slots?

Free Drops are ELK's name for free spins in games where symbols drop into place rather than spin. In Cygnus, 7 free drops are played on the fully expanded grid with multipliers kept for the whole round; in Pirots, three bonus symbols give five Free Drops with the grid size and gem levels carried over. Our free spins glossary entry covers the standard version of the feature.

Can I buy bonuses in ELK Studios games in the UK?

No, you can't pay to jump straight into a bonus round on slots offered in Great Britain. Since a Gambling Commission warning in January 2020, feature buy-ins are not offered to British players, so the version of an ELK game you see in a UK app may differ from versions sold elsewhere. Bonus rounds trigger only during normal play. Our game design rules page lists the other UK rules for slots.

Do ELK Studios games work on Android?

Yes, ELK Studios games are HTML5 slots that run inside UK casino apps and mobile sites on Android phones and tablets, as well as on iPhone. The game loads from the supplier when you open it, so you need a data connection. Games with large grids, such as Pirots and Cygnus, are easier to read on a bigger screen. Our guide to Android casino apps covers installing them safely.

How much can you win on Reindeer Royale?

Reindeer Royale has a published maximum win of 25,000× the stake, which is the highest of the ELK games we have verified. At a 10p stake that cap is £2,500. It is a high-volatility game with a 94% RTP, and a max win is a ceiling that very few sessions approach, so don't treat it as a target. Our guide to slots on mobile explains volatility in more detail.
