Turbo spin: meaning and UK rules

Turbo spin is a slot setting that speeds up each spin by cutting the reel animation short, so the result appears sooner. It isn't allowed in UK casino apps: since 31 October 2021, slots licensed in Great Britain can't offer turbo, quick spin or anything else that shortens the time until a result is shown.

Key takeaways

  • Turbo spin shortened the animation, not the maths: the result and the odds stayed the same.
  • RTS 14E has banned turbo and quick spin on UK slots since 31 October 2021.
  • Slots must also allow at least 2.5 seconds per game cycle.
  • Bonus rounds that need no extra stake, and reveal-all features, are outside the ban.

Turbo spin meaning

On slots built for other markets, a setting can switch the game to a quicker mode. The reels still land on a result chosen by the game's random number generator; turbo only trims the animation around it. The practical effect is more spins per minute.

It belongs with autoplay and slam stop in our casino app glossary: three features that raised the pace of play and are now gone from UK slots.

The UK turbo spin ban: RTS 14E

The Commission's RTS 14 on responsible product design (opens in a new tab) says the system must not let a customer reduce the time until the result is presented, and names turbo, quick spin and slam stop as features that aren't permitted. It sits next to RTS 14D, which requires at least 2.5 seconds from the start of one slot game to the start of the next.

Our pages on game speed rules and why slots spin slower on UK apps cover the background.

What a turbo spin speed would cost per hour

Speed matters because expected loss builds with every spin. The 2.5-second minimum caps a slot at 1,440 spins an hour (3,600 ÷ 2.5), even if you pressed instantly every time. The table compares that ceiling with a hypothetical one-second turbo pace, at 20p a spin on a slot with a 96% RTP (a 4% house edge).

Maximum spins and expected loss per hour at 20p (4% house edge)
PaceSpins an hourStaked an hourExpected loss an hour
UK minimum: 2.5 seconds1,440£288£11.52
Hypothetical turbo: 1 second3,600£720£28.80

Same stake, same game, same odds: the faster pace alone multiplies the expected hourly cost by two and a half. These are ceilings, as real play is slower, but they show why the rule targets speed. See house edge for the formula.

Bonus rounds and reveal-all: what turbo rules don't cover

RTS 14E doesn't apply to bonus or feature games where no additional stake is wagered, and it doesn't ban reveal-all features. So a pick-and-click bonus round may let you show every remaining prize at once. That's allowed because no new money is being risked at a faster rate.

Turbo-style speed and enforcement

The rules are enforced against game studios as well as casinos. In June 2026, Stakelogic BV agreed to pay £122,835 after some of its slots ran faster than the 2.5-second minimum, as set out in the Commission's Stakelogic enforcement notice (opens in a new tab).

For other casino games, the Commission's speed of play decision (opens in a new tab) set a 5-second minimum game cycle from 17 January 2025. The turbo ban in RTS 14E is written for slots; the 5-second floor is what limits pace on roulette, blackjack and similar games. Our online game design rules page lists both.

Turbo spin on your phone: what to expect

  1. Expect each slot spin in a UK app to take at least 2.5 seconds from start to the next start.
  2. Release and press spin again for every round; holding the button won't repeat spins.
  3. Don't look for a turbo icon in settings: a UK-licensed game shouldn't have one.
  4. If a game seems to offer turbo, check the app is licensed by the Gambling Commission.

Our guide to how to spot an unlicensed casino app explains the register check, and game speed rules on mobile casino games covers the timings in apps.

Frequently asked questions

What is turbo spin on a slot?

Turbo spin is a mode that shortens each spin's animation so the result appears sooner, letting you play more spins per minute. It doesn't change the game's odds or RTP, only the pace. It has been banned on slots licensed in Great Britain since 31 October 2021. For the wider picture, see our game speed rules page.

Why is there no turbo spin in UK casino apps?

Because RTS 14E, one of the Commission's technical standards, says players must not be able to reduce the time until a result is shown, and names turbo and quick spin specifically. Faster play means more stakes per hour and a higher expected cost, which is what the rule aims to limit. Our guide to why slots spin slower on UK apps explains more.

Does turbo spin change the RTP or the result?

No. The result is decided by the game's random number generator, and turbo only shortened the animation that shows it. RTP and house edge stay the same at any speed. What changes is how many spins fit into an hour, so the expected cost of a session rises with pace. See RTP for how return to player works.

How fast can a UK slot spin?

No faster than one game cycle every 2.5 seconds, from the start of one spin to the start of the next. That caps play at 1,440 spins an hour even with instant presses. You must also release and press the start button again between spins. Our game cycle entry explains how a round is measured.

Can a bonus round still play quickly?

Yes, in some cases. RTS 14E doesn't apply to bonus or feature games where no extra stake is wagered, and reveal-all features aren't banned. So a bonus round may move faster than the base game or show all its prizes at once. The speed rule bites on paid spins, where new money is at risk. Read about free spins in casino apps for how bonus spins work.

Has anyone been fined for slots that ran too fast?

Yes. In June 2026 the game supplier Stakelogic BV agreed to pay £122,835 after some of its slots ran below the 2.5-second minimum. The case shows the speed rules apply to studios that make games, not just to casinos. You can follow other cases on our online game design rules page.
