Sakura Fortune slot review
The Sakura Fortune slot is Quickspin’s April 2017 release on a 5×4 grid with 40 paylines, built around a stacking Princess wild, a respin feature and sticky wilds in free spins. Its RTP reaches 96.58%, but a version around 90% also exists, so the copy your app loads makes a real difference to the cost of play.

Sakura Fortune slot at a glance
Sakura is the Japanese word for cherry blossom, and the game leans on that theme, with a princess and paper fans doing most of the work on the reels. It comes from Quickspin, the Swedish studio that also made Big Bad Wolf, and it is one of the titles the studio is best known for.
Under the theme, Sakura Fortune is a straightforward payline game. There are five reels, four rows and 40 fixed lines, and almost everything interesting happens because of one symbol: the Princess wild.

How the features work in Sakura Fortune
The Princess wild
The Princess is the game’s wild, and on reels 2, 3 and 4 it can land as a full stack four symbols tall, covering the whole reel from top to bottom. A full stack on a middle reel joins up with every one of the 40 lines that pass through that reel, which is why it matters so much.
The Sakura Fortune Respin
When two full Princess stacks land on the same spin, the Sakura Fortune Respin begins. Those two stacks are held in place and the other reels spin again, twice. If another full Princess stack appears during the respins, it is held too and you get one more respin on top.
Because the stacks can only appear on reels 2, 3 and 4, two held stacks leave just one middle reel to fill. If that third reel also turns into a full stack, all three middle reels are wild together, which is the strongest position the respin can reach.
Free spins with sticky, expanding wilds
Three or more fan scatters, counted from the first reel, start the free spins round. In this round, any Princess wild that lands grows to cover its whole reel and stays there as a sticky wild until the round ends. Each one also gives you an extra free spin, so a round that collects wilds early tends to last longer as well as paying more per spin.
Sakura Fortune RTP: why the version matters
RTP is the share of all money staked that a game returns over a very long run. Sakura Fortune’s published top figure is 96.58%, but a version at around 90% also exists. Casinos choose which version to offer, and both look identical on screen.
The difference shows up in the house edge, which is simply 100% minus the RTP. That turns 3.42% into roughly 10%, almost three times as expensive for the same spins.
| Version | House edge | Average cost per £100 staked | Average cost per £20 staked |
|---|---|---|---|
| 96.58% RTP | 3.42% | £3.42 | £0.68 |
| About 90% RTP | About 10% | About £10.00 | About £2.00 |
UK operators must show players the rules and the return to player for each game, under the Gambling Commission’s technical standard on game information (opens in a new tab). Our guide on how to find a game’s RTP in an app walks through where that information usually sits.
Sakura Fortune paylines: 40 lines on a 5×4 grid
A 5×4 grid has 20 positions, and Sakura Fortune draws 40 fixed lines across them. Wins pay left to right on those lines, and you can’t switch lines off, so your stake always covers all 40.
That fixed structure is why the middle-reel wilds are so effective. A line can’t reach reel 5 without passing through reels 2, 3 and 4, so a full wild stack in the middle fills a gap on every single line at once. With two or three stacks held during the respin, the outer reels decide most of the result.
If you prefer games that count ways rather than lines, our explainer on Megaways slots on mobile shows how the two systems differ.
A £20 Sakura Fortune budget at 10p, 50p and £1
Expected loss is stake multiplied by house edge. On £20 of total stakes that’s £0.68 on the 96.58% version, whatever stake you choose. What changes with the stake is how long the £20 lasts, how many chances the respin and free spins get, and how much a run of losses costs per minute.
| Stake per spin | Spins if nothing comes back | Average loss on £20 (96.58%) | Average loss on £20 (about 90%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10p | 200 | £0.68 | About £2.00 |
| 50p | 40 | £0.68 | About £2.00 |
| £1 | 20 | £0.68 | About £2.00 |
These are averages over enormous numbers of spins. A real 200-spin session can end with nothing left, or with more than you started with; the average only tells you the price of the entertainment in the long run.
What an hour can cost
UK rules set a minimum of 2.5 seconds per slot spin, so the fastest possible pace is 1,440 spins an hour. At 10p that’s £144 staked in an hour, with an average cost of about £4.92 on the 96.58% version or £14.40 on the 90% version. At £1 a spin those figures become £49.25 and £144. Time adds up quickly on a phone, which is why a deposit limit set in advance is worth having.
We haven’t verified a volatility rating for Sakura Fortune. Read the info screen in the game for the studio’s own description of how often and how large wins tend to be.
Playing Sakura Fortune on a phone
Sakura Fortune is an HTML5 game, like other current Quickspin slots, so it loads inside casino apps and mobile browsers rather than as a separate download. Whether it opens in portrait or landscape depends on the app; our guide to landscape and portrait mode explains why that varies.
A four-row grid with 40 lines packs a lot onto a small screen, so a larger phone or an iPad makes the line wins easier to follow. The game itself is the same on every device.
- Install a UK-licensed casino app from the App Store or Google Play, or use the casino’s mobile site. Our iPhone download guide covers the safe way to find the official listing.
- Register and complete age and identity checks; you can’t play, even in demo mode, until your age is verified.
- Search the lobby for “Sakura Fortune”. If it doesn’t appear, the casino doesn’t carry it.
- Before you stake, open the game menu and read the RTP shown in the rules. Look for 96.58% rather than the lower version.
- Set your stake, keeping it small enough that your budget covers many spins.
- Watch the net spend and time display that UK casino games must show while you play.
UK slot rules that apply to Sakura Fortune
Every UK version of Sakura Fortune runs under the same online slot rules, whichever app you use. They change how the game feels compared with older footage you may see online.
- Stake limits: £5 a spin if you are 25 or over, and £2 if you are 18 to 24, as set out in the Commission’s online slots stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab). See our page on slot stake limits.
- No autoplay: each spin is started by hand. Our explainer on why there’s no autoplay covers the background.
- Speed: at least 2.5 seconds per spin, and no turbo or slam-stop.
- No false celebrations: a return equal to or lower than your stake can’t be presented as a win.
- Feature buys: since a Gambling Commission warning in January 2020, feature buy-ins are not offered to British players.
These are design rules for the game, not features of a particular casino, so they apply to the respin and free spins exactly as they do to normal spins.

Sakura Fortune myths to ignore
- “Apps pay less than websites.” The RTP depends on the version the casino chose, not the device. Check the game’s help screen on whichever device you use.
- “Respins are due after a dry spell.” Every spin is independent; the random number generator has no memory of earlier results.
- “Raising the stake after a loss makes it back.” The house edge stays the same at every stake, so larger stakes simply raise the average cost.
- “Some times of day pay better.” There is no timing pattern in a licensed slot.
Treat the game as paid entertainment. Losses are the likely outcome over time, and help is free on the National Gambling Helpline (0808 8020 133) if play stops feeling like a choice.

Frequently asked questions
What is the RTP of the Sakura Fortune slot?
The top published RTP for Sakura Fortune is 96.58%, but a version around 90% also exists. Casinos pick which one to run, and the two look the same in play. On the higher version the average cost is £3.42 per £100 staked; on the lower one it is about £10. The game’s rules screen shows the figure for the copy you are playing, and our guide to finding a game’s RTP explains where to look.
How do you trigger the Sakura Fortune Respin?
You trigger it by landing two full Princess wild stacks on the same spin. Full stacks can only appear on reels 2, 3 and 4. The two stacks are held for two respins, and each extra full stack that lands is also held and adds one more respin. Results still come from the random number generator, so the feature can’t be timed or forced. Our glossary entry on volatility explains why feature-led games feel streaky.
How do the free spins work in Sakura Fortune?
Three or more fan scatters, counted from the first reel, start the free spins round. During it, any Princess wild that lands expands to fill its reel, stays sticky until the round ends and adds one extra free spin. The starting number of spins is listed in the game’s paytable. For how free spins in games differ from free spins in welcome offers, see our guide to free spins in casino apps.
Can I play Sakura Fortune on my phone?
Yes, Sakura Fortune runs on phones and tablets through casino apps and mobile sites that carry Quickspin games. It is an HTML5 game, so there’s nothing extra to install beyond the casino app itself. The four-row grid is easier to read on a larger screen. Our iPhone casino apps page and Android phones page cover installing apps safely and the settings worth changing.
Is Sakura Fortune a high volatility slot?
We haven’t verified a volatility rating for Sakura Fortune, so we don’t quote one. The game’s info screen usually gives the studio’s own description. Its design does concentrate a lot of value in the respin and the sticky-wild free spins, which tends to make results uneven between sessions. Our explainer on what volatility means in slot apps shows how to read whatever rating the game gives.
What is the maximum stake on Sakura Fortune in the UK?
The maximum is £5 a spin if you are 25 or over and £2 if you are 18 to 24, because UK online slot stake limits apply to every slot. The game’s own stake range may be lower than those caps at some casinos. Smaller stakes stretch a budget over far more spins. Our page on UK slot stake limits gives the dates and the background to the rule.
Can I buy the bonus in Sakura Fortune?
No feature buy is available to UK players. Since a Gambling Commission warning in January 2020, feature buy-ins are not offered to British players, so the respin and free spins can only be reached through normal play. If you see footage with a buy option, it comes from outside Great Britain. Our UK game design rules page covers this and the other online slot rules.
Who makes Sakura Fortune?
Sakura Fortune is made by Quickspin, a Stockholm studio founded in the early 2010s and owned by Playtech since May 2016. Quickspin holds a Gambling Commission licence under account 38516 and has about 150 video slots, with Big Bad Wolf and Goldilocks among its other best-known games. Our Quickspin studio page lists the Quickspin slots we review.
