Wolf Run slot review
The Wolf Run slot is IGT’s 40-payline wolf game with stacked wilds and a five-spin bonus, first released online in 2014. Its 94.98% RTP sits below many newer slots, so this review shows what that gap costs in pounds, how the features work and how it plays in a UK casino app.

Key takeaways
- Wolf Run is an IGT slot on a 5 × 4 grid with 40 paylines and a published RTP of 94.98%.
- Volatility is low to medium, so wins tend to be smaller and more frequent than on high-volatility games.
- The house edge of 5.02% means about £5 lost for every £100 staked over the long run.
- Stacked wolf wilds and a retriggerable five-spin bonus are the only features; there is no progressive jackpot.
- UK limits apply: £5 a spin at 25 and over, £2 at 18–24, no autoplay and at least 2.5 seconds per spin.

Wolf Run slot at a glance
Wolf Run is a straightforward five-reel game from IGT, the Las Vegas company also behind Cleopatra and Da Vinci Diamonds. It moved online in 2014 and still turns up in many UK lobbies because of its simple rules.
The grid has four rows instead of the usual three, which gives room for 40 fixed paylines. Everything revolves around the howling wolf wild, which can arrive stacked and cover a whole reel, plus a short free spins round.

How the features work in Wolf Run
There are two features to understand, and both are easy to follow on a small screen.
The howling wolf wild
The howling wolf is the wild symbol. It stands in for every other symbol apart from the bonus symbol, helping to complete lines. Wilds can land stacked, meaning a column of them fills an entire reel. With 40 lines running across four rows, one full wild reel can feed into many lines at once.
The free spins bonus
The bonus symbol only matters on the middle three reels: reels two, three and four. Land one on each of those three reels together and you get five free spins. During those spins the game adds extra wilds and extra bonus symbols to the reels, which is what gives the round its value. Landing the trigger again inside the round awards more spins, so a bonus can run longer than five.
We don’t quote how often the bonus triggers. Third-party sites publish trigger rates, but they aren’t verified by IGT, and every spin is random.
Wolf Run RTP: what 94.98% costs in pounds
An RTP of 94.98% means the game is designed to pay back about £94.98 for every £100 staked, measured over millions of spins. The other £5.02 is the house edge. Over one session the result can be far above or below that, but the edge is what you pay on average.
To show the cost per hour, we assume 600 spins an hour, roughly one every six seconds. The UK minimum spin time is 2.5 seconds, so faster play is possible. Expected loss is total staked × 5.02%.
| Stake per spin | Staked per hour | Expected loss per hour |
|---|---|---|
| 10p | £60 | £3.01 |
| 50p | £300 | £15.06 |
| £1 | £600 | £30.12 |
| £2 | £1,200 | £60.24 |
Compare that with a 96% game such as many of the slots on our high RTP apps list: at £1 a spin for 600 spins, a 4% edge costs £24 an hour against Wolf Run’s £30.12. The gap is real, though it matters most to people who play for long sessions.
A £20 budget on Wolf Run at 10p, 50p and £1
Low-to-medium volatility means the game tends to pay small amounts fairly often rather than saving value for rare large hits. That usually makes a budget last longer than on a very volatile game, though nothing is guaranteed and a run of losing spins can happen at any stake.
| Stake | Spins if nothing came back | Expected loss if you stake the full £20 once |
|---|---|---|
| 10p | 200 | £1.00 |
| 50p | 40 | £1.00 |
| £1 | 20 | £1.00 |
The last column surprises people: if you put exactly £20 through the game, the expected loss is the same at any stake. What changes is time. At 10p you get far more spins, more chances to see the bonus and a session that lasts longer. At £1 the same money is gone in a few minutes unless wins keep it going, and wins recycled into more spins carry the same 5.02% edge.
Decide your budget before you open the game and use your app’s deposit limit tools to hold to it.
Playing the Wolf Run slot on iPhone and Android
Casino apps load slots like Wolf Run inside their own game window, so you don’t install the game separately. You open it from the lobby of whichever app you use, on iPhone or an Android phone.
The four-row grid is a little taller than a classic 5 × 3 slot. How the game lays out in portrait or landscape depends on the version your casino loads, so try both orientations and keep the one where the symbols are easiest to read. Our page on landscape vs portrait mode covers rotation settings.
- Open your casino app and sign in. Age and identity checks must be complete before you can play, including demo games.
- Search the lobby for “Wolf Run”. If it doesn’t appear, that app doesn’t carry it.
- Open the game’s information screen and check the RTP and the stake range.
- Set your stake. Each spin needs a fresh tap, because autoplay isn’t allowed in the UK.
- Check the running net spend and session time shown on screen, and stop when you reach your limit.
A slot like this uses little data compared with live casino. If a spin is interrupted by lost signal, the result is decided on the server, and our page on losing signal during a spin explains what happens next.
UK rules that shape Wolf Run in casino apps
Every UK-licensed app has to run Wolf Run within the Gambling Commission’s slot rules. These affect what you see on screen.
- Stake limits: £5 a spin for players aged 25 and over (from 9 April 2025) and £2 for those aged 18–24 (from 21 May 2025), as set out in the Commission’s online slots stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab).
- Speed: at least 2.5 seconds between spins, with no turbo or slam-stop, under the Commission’s responsible product design standard (opens in a new tab).
- No autoplay: banned on online slots since 31 October 2021. Our guide on why there’s no autoplay explains the reasoning.
- No fake celebrations: a return equal to or lower than your stake can’t be celebrated with win sounds or animations.
- Feature buys: since a Gambling Commission warning in January 2020, feature buy-ins are not offered to British players, so the bonus can only be reached by landing it.

Frequently asked questions
What is the RTP of the Wolf Run slot?
Wolf Run’s published RTP is 94.98%, which gives a house edge of 5.02%. In practice that means the game is set to keep about £5.02 of every £100 staked over a very long run of spins. Individual sessions can land well above or below that. Some casinos may run a different version, so open the game’s information screen to confirm the figure, and read our RTP glossary entry for more on what the number means.
Who makes Wolf Run?
Wolf Run is made by IGT, a slot and gaming technology company headquartered in Las Vegas. IGT is also known for Cleopatra and Da Vinci Diamonds, and since 1 July 2025 it has been owned by funds managed by Apollo, alongside Everi. The online version of Wolf Run was released in 2014. Our IGT slots page covers the studio’s other games and how they play on a phone.
How do you trigger free spins on Wolf Run?
You trigger free spins by landing a bonus symbol on each of the three middle reels in the same spin. That awards five free spins, during which extra wilds and bonus symbols are added to the reels. Landing the trigger again inside the round gives more spins. There’s no way to buy the feature in the UK, so it only comes from normal play. Our guide to free spins in casino apps explains how bonus rounds differ from promotional spins.
Is Wolf Run high volatility?
No, Wolf Run is rated low to medium volatility. That generally means smaller wins arriving more often, rather than long dry spells broken by rare large payouts. It doesn’t change the house edge, which stays at 5.02%; it only changes how bumpy the ride feels. If you want to understand how volatility affects a budget, our volatility explainer walks through examples in pounds.
Can I play Wolf Run on my phone?
Yes, if your casino app carries it. Wolf Run opens inside the app’s game window on iPhone and Android, so there’s nothing extra to install. Search the lobby by name, check the information screen for the RTP and stakes, and pick whichever screen orientation is easiest to read. Our guide to slots on mobile covers what changes on a small screen.
What is the maximum stake on Wolf Run in the UK?
The maximum is £5 a spin if you’re 25 or over and £2 a spin if you’re aged 18 to 24. These Gambling Commission limits apply to all online slots, including Wolf Run, whatever the game’s own maximum is elsewhere. The casino uses your verified age to set the cap. See our page on slot stake limits on mobile for how the limits show up in apps.
Can I play Wolf Run for free?
Some UK casino apps offer a demo version of slots, but you must still pass age verification before you can use it, because UK rules require that for free-to-play games too. Demo play is a good way to see the stacked wilds and bonus without staking money. Whether Wolf Run has a demo depends on the app. Our page on demo mode in casino apps explains how it works.
Is Wolf Run’s RTP lower on the app than on desktop?
Not by default. The app and website normally load the same game from the same provider, so the version is set by the casino, not by your device. A casino can choose between versions with different RTPs, which is why you should check the game’s help screen wherever you play. Our answer to is RTP lower on casino apps goes into more detail.
