Buffalo Blitz slot: a quick look
Buffalo Blitz is a straightforward ways-to-win game with one clear goal: land scatters for free spins, ideally lots of them. The base game relies on stacked buffalo symbols filling reels, and the diamond wilds help connect them across the six reels.
Playtech, the developer, was founded in 1999 in Tartu, Estonia, by Teddy Sagi, has its headquarters in Douglas on the Isle of Man and is listed on the London Stock Exchange. It is best known for the Age of the Gods jackpot games and its live casino studios; our Playtech slots page has the wider catalogue. For every review we publish, start at our slots hub.

How the features work in Buffalo Blitz
Ways to win, stacked buffalo and diamond wilds
Wins pay for matching symbols on adjacent reels from the left, with four positions per reel, which gives 4 × 4 × 4 × 4 × 4 × 4 = 4,096 ways. Buffalo symbols are stacked, so they can fill several positions on a reel at once. Diamond wilds appear on reels 2 to 6 and substitute to help complete wins; they don’t land on the first reel.
The free spins ladder
Scatters trigger the free spins, and the number you land sets the award. The jump from five scatters to six is the dramatic one: from 25 spins to 100.
| Scatters landed | Free spins awarded |
|---|---|
| 3 | 8 |
| 4 | 15 |
| 5 | 25 |
| 6 | 100 |
Random multipliers and extra spins
During the free spins, any win that includes a wild gets a random multiplier. Further scatters landing in the round add more spins, so a round can run well beyond its starting count. The multiplier range and the extra spins per scatter are set out in the game’s help screen rather than in the specification we use.
Buffalo Blitz RTP: 95.96% or 94.01%?
Buffalo Blitz exists in at least two RTP versions, and the operator chooses which one its app runs. The difference looks small on paper, but it changes what the game costs.
At 95.96% the house edge is 4.04%; at 94.01% it is 5.99%. Over £100 of stakes, that is £4.04 against £5.99 on average, so the lower version costs £1.95 more for exactly the same play, roughly 48% more.
| Stake | Paid spins from £20 | Hour at the fastest legal pace (1,440 spins): staked | Expected cost at 95.96% | Expected cost at 94.01% |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10p | 200 | £144 | £5.82 | £8.63 |
| 50p | 40 | £720 | £29.09 | £43.13 |
| £1 | 20 | £1,440 | £58.18 | £86.26 |
The hour column assumes wins keep the balance going, which on a high-volatility game is far from certain: at £1, £20 covers only 20 paid spins. The point of the table is the gap between the two right-hand columns. Before you play, find out which version you’re on.
- Open Buffalo Blitz in your app without spinning.
- Tap the help, menu or “i” icon to open the game rules.
- Look for “return to player”, “RTP” or “theoretical return”.
- If it says 94.01%, decide whether you’re happy with the higher cost.
- If you prefer the 95.96% version, check the same game’s rules in another licensed app.
The Gambling Commission’s RTS 3 rules on game information (opens in a new tab) require operators to give you information about your likelihood of winning, which is why the figure should be in the rules. Our guide to finding a game’s RTP in an app walks through the same check for any game.
Buffalo Blitz on mobile casino apps
If the operator lists it, Buffalo Blitz runs in the app’s game window on iPhone and Android like any other slot. Six reels with four rows is wider than a classic 5×3, and its published specification doesn’t say whether there’s a portrait layout, so landscape may be easier on a phone.
- Search the lobby for the exact name; Buffalo Blitz II is a separate game.
- Check the RTP in the help screen before choosing a stake.
- Use a stake that gives a high-volatility game enough spins to reach the bonus.
- Turn the phone sideways if the 6×4 grid looks small.
Reel slots use little data compared with live casino. If your app is slow to load games, our guide to fixing a casino app that won’t open has practical checks.
UK slot rules that apply to Buffalo Blitz
Every UK-licensed app has to run Buffalo Blitz under the same British rules.
| Rule | Start date | Effect on the game |
|---|---|---|
| Stake limit £5 (ages 25+) | 9 April 2025 | Highest stake £5 per spin |
| Stake limit £2 (ages 18–24) | 21 May 2025 | Highest stake £2 per spin |
| No autoplay | 31 October 2021 | Every spin needs a tap |
| Minimum 2.5 seconds per spin | 31 October 2021 | Maximum 1,440 spins an hour |
| No turbo or slam-stop | 31 October 2021 | You can’t skip the spin animation |
| No celebrating a return equal to or below the stake | 31 October 2021 | Small returns get no win fanfare |
The stake limits are explained in the Commission’s online slots stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab). Since a Gambling Commission warning in January 2020, feature buy-ins are not offered to British players, so the scatters are the only way into free spins. Our game design rules and RTP information rules pages cover the rest.
Buffalo Blitz vs other buffalo and rhino slots
Animal-stampede slots are a genre of their own. Here is how Buffalo Blitz compares with the ones we review.
| Slot | Developer | RTP | Volatility | Ways |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Buffalo Blitz | Playtech | 95.96% (94.01% version exists) | High | 4,096 |
| Buffalo King | Pragmatic Play | 96.06% (default) | High | 4,096 |
| Raging Rhino | WMS (Light & Wonder) | 95.91% | High | 4,096 |
| Buffalo King Megaways | Pragmatic Play | 96.52% | High | Up to 200,704 |
| Great Rhino Megaways | Pragmatic Play | 96.58% | High | Up to 200,704 |
Buffalo King uses the same 6×4, 4,096-ways shape with multiplier wilds in free spins, so it is the closest like-for-like comparison. The Megaways games trade a fixed grid for changing reel heights and far more ways.

Frequently asked questions
What is the RTP of Buffalo Blitz?
Buffalo Blitz has an RTP of 95.96%, but a 94.01% version also exists. The operator chooses which version to run, so check the game’s rules in your app before you play. The lower version costs £5.99 per £100 staked on average, against £4.04 for the higher one. Our answer on whether RTP is lower on casino apps explains how versions work.
How many free spins can you get on Buffalo Blitz?
You can get 8, 15, 25 or 100 free spins for three, four, five or six scatters respectively. Further scatters during the round add more spins, so the total can grow beyond the starting award. During free spins, wins involving a wild get a random multiplier. The help screen lists the exact extra spins and multiplier range. Our free spins glossary entry explains how in-game spins work.
How many ways to win does Buffalo Blitz have?
Buffalo Blitz has 4,096 ways to win. The grid is six reels by four rows, and wins pay for matching symbols on adjacent reels from the left, so the count is four multiplied by itself six times. You pay one stake per spin to cover all of them. Our guide to slots on mobile explains paylines, ways and clusters.
Is Buffalo Blitz high volatility?
Yes, Buffalo Blitz is rated high volatility. Most of its bigger returns depend on reaching free spins and landing wild multipliers, so sessions can include long spells of small or no returns. A lower stake gives a fixed budget more spins without changing the house edge. Our explainer on volatility in slot apps covers how it differs from RTP.
Who makes Buffalo Blitz?
Playtech makes Buffalo Blitz and released it in 2016. The company was founded in 1999 in Tartu, Estonia, by Teddy Sagi, is headquartered in Douglas on the Isle of Man and is listed on the London Stock Exchange. It is also known for Age of the Gods jackpots and live casino. Our Playtech studio page lists more of its slots.
Can I play Buffalo Blitz on my phone?
Yes, if your casino app lists it, Buffalo Blitz runs in the app on iPhone and Android. The 6×4 grid is wide, and its specification doesn’t mention a portrait layout, so turning your phone to landscape may help. Search for the exact name, as Buffalo Blitz II is a separate game. Our guide on landscape and portrait mode explains the options.
What is the most I can bet on Buffalo Blitz?
The most you can bet is £5 per spin if you’re 25 or over and £2 per spin if you’re 18 to 24. These limits apply to all online slots in UK-licensed apps, from 9 April 2025 and 21 May 2025 respectively. The app uses your verified age to set the cap. Our page on slot stake limits on mobile explains how they work.
