Gemix slot overview

Gemix is a gem-matching slot from Play’n GO, released in 2014. It uses a recipe that fans of the studio’s Reactoonz will recognise: a 7x7 grid, cluster wins, cascades and a charge meter that triggers special features.

Two things set it apart. It’s rated medium volatility, which is unusual among grid slots, and it has no free spins round at all.

How the features work in Gemix

Clusters and cascades

A win needs a group of five or more matching gems. Winning gems are removed, and new symbols drop in to fill the spaces, which can form fresh clusters from the same paid spin. Our cluster pays glossary entry covers how this format differs from paylines.

The Crystal Charge

Every symbol removed by a cascade adds to the Crystal Charge. Remove enough and it fills, awarding one of four random features: Nova Blast, Crystal Warp, Light Beam or Chain Lightning. Each one either blows up symbols or transforms them, clearing space for new gems or creating matches that weren’t there before.

Which of the four you get is random. The game’s help screen describes exactly what each one does to the grid.

Three worlds with their own wilds

Instead of free spins, Gemix moves you through three worlds. Each world has its own wild feature: random lamp wilds, a lollipop wild that spreads, or sticky spellbook wilds that stay in place. The change of world brings a new look as well as a different way of adding wilds.

Gemix has no free spins: what replaces them

Most slots save their biggest moments for a free spins round triggered by scatters. Gemix spreads its features across normal paid play instead: the Crystal Charge fires during ordinary spins, and the world-specific wilds are part of the base game.

That design fits the medium volatility rating. In general, a game that spreads its features across paid spins tends to swing less sharply than one that concentrates value in a rare bonus. It doesn’t change the long-run cost, which is set by the RTP.

Gemix RTP: 96.83% and lower versions

At 96.83%, Gemix has one of the higher published RTPs among grid slots, with a house edge of 3.17%. However, lower versions exist, and each casino chooses the version it offers. The Gambling Commission’s RTS 3 on game rules and the likelihood of winning (opens in a new tab) requires operators to show that information to you.

Why the RTP version matters on Gemix
RTPHouse edgeExpected cost per £100 staked
96.83% (top version)3.17%£3.17
Each 1 point lower+1 point+£1.00
Example: 2 points lower5.17%£5.17

The second and third rows are arithmetic, not published versions: they show how each percentage point changes your costs. Check the actual figure in your app with these steps:

  1. Open Gemix from your casino app’s game lobby.
  2. Tap the menu or information icon inside the game.
  3. Scroll to the section that lists the theoretical return to player.
  4. Compare it with 96.83%; if it’s lower, you’re on a reduced-RTP version.
  5. Repeat this in any other app, as versions differ by casino.

Our guide on finding a game’s RTP in an app explains where the figure usually sits, and is RTP lower on casino apps? explains why playing on a phone doesn’t by itself mean a lower return.

A £20 Gemix session at medium volatility

£20 on Gemix (top RTP version)
Stake per spinSpinsExpected loss on £20Expected loss on £60 re-staked
10p200£0.63£1.90
50p40£0.63£1.90
£120£0.63£1.90

The last column shows a common pattern: £20 deposited, wins re-staked, and £60 put through the game in total. More turnover means more expected cost, even when the balance seems to hold steady.

Medium volatility doesn’t mean low risk. Losing the whole £20 is still a normal outcome, just as finishing ahead sometimes is. The house edge means losses are likely over time, so budget for the cost rather than for a result.

Gemix on a phone screen

A 7x7 grid packs 49 gems into the reel area, so each symbol is small on a phone. The gems are distinguished by colour and shape, which helps, but a bigger screen or a tablet makes clusters easier to spot. Our guides to casino apps on iPhone and on Android phones cover set-up.

Feature animations such as Chain Lightning take a moment to play out after a cascade. All of that belongs to the same paid spin, so let it finish before deciding on your next stake.

Play’n GO and its cluster slots

Play’n GO is based in Växjö, Sweden, and is independent and privately held. It built its first gaming product in 1997, has a library of several hundred games, and is known for Book of Dead, Reactoonz and Legacy of Dead.

UK rules that shape Gemix in casino apps

  • Stakes: no more than £5 a spin at 25 and over, or £2 at 18 to 24. The Commission’s online slots stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab) applies the limit to each game cycle, which includes all cascades from one paid spin.
  • Speed: each paid spin takes at least 2.5 seconds, and turbo or slam-stop options aren’t allowed.
  • Autoplay: banned on slots since 31 October 2021.
  • Celebrations: a cascade that returns your stake or less can’t be dressed up as a win.
  • Spend display: net spend and time played shown in real time since 17 January 2025.

Feature buy-ins are not offered to British players since a Gambling Commission warning in January 2020. See our UK game design rules and slot stake limits pages for more.

Gemix pros and cons

Advantages

  • High top RTP of 96.83%
  • Medium volatility, unusual for a grid slot
  • Crystal Charge features fire during normal play
  • Three worlds keep the look and wilds changing

Drawbacks

  • Lower RTP versions exist, so you must check each app
  • No free spins round, if that’s what you enjoy
  • Small symbols on a 7x7 grid on smaller phones
  • Max win not confirmed in published specifications

Gemix suits players who want a grid slot with gentler swings and features that arrive during ordinary play. If you prefer a classic scatter-triggered bonus, a line slot from our best slot apps list may suit you better.

Frequently asked questions

What is the RTP of Gemix?

Gemix has a top published RTP of 96.83%, which is a house edge of 3.17%. Lower versions exist, though, and the casino decides which one it runs. Load the game in your app and open the information screen to see the actual figure before you play. Our guide on how to find the RTP in a casino app shows where to look.

Does Gemix have free spins?

No, Gemix doesn’t have a free spins round. Instead, its features appear during normal paid spins: the Crystal Charge fires random symbol-clearing features, and the game moves through three worlds, each with its own wild feature. This is one reason it’s rated medium volatility rather than high. See our free spins guide for how scatter-triggered rounds work elsewhere.

What is the Crystal Charge in Gemix?

The Crystal Charge is a meter that fills as cascades remove symbols. When it’s full, it awards one of four random features: Nova Blast, Crystal Warp, Light Beam or Chain Lightning. Each blows up or transforms symbols on the grid. The feature you get is random, and the help screen explains each one. Compare the similar meter in our Reactoonz review.

How many symbols do you need to win on Gemix?

You need a cluster of five or more matching gems to win. Winning gems then disappear and new ones drop in, so one paid spin can create several wins in a row. Larger clusters pay more, as shown in the game’s paytable. Our cluster pays glossary entry explains how the format differs from paylines and ways to win.

Is Gemix high or medium volatility?

Gemix is listed as medium volatility, which is unusual for a 7x7 grid slot; Play’n GO’s Reactoonz and Viking Runecraft are both rated high. Medium volatility suggests gentler swings, but losing a session budget remains a common outcome. The RTP, not the volatility, sets the long-run cost. Read our volatility explainer for more.

Who makes Gemix?

Play’n GO makes Gemix. The studio is based in Växjö, Sweden, is independent and privately held, and built its first gaming product in 1997. It’s known for Book of Dead, Reactoonz and Legacy of Dead, and its library runs to several hundred games. Our Play’n GO slots page covers more of its titles.

What are the three worlds in Gemix?

Gemix moves you through three worlds, each with a different wild feature. One adds random lamp wilds, one has a lollipop wild that spreads across the grid, and one uses sticky spellbook wilds that stay in place. The game’s rules explain how you progress between them. For a newer grid slot with layered wilds, see our Reactoonz 2 review.

Is Gemix easy to play on a phone?

Yes, though the 7x7 grid makes each gem small on a compact screen. The gems differ in colour and shape, which helps, and a larger phone makes clusters easier to follow. It runs in UK casino apps and mobile browsers. Our guide to landscape vs portrait mode explains how orientation can help on busy grids.
