Gonzo's Quest is one of the titles NetEnt is best known for, alongside Starburst and Mega Fortune. Its fame rests on one mechanic, the Avalanche, which turns a single paid spin into a chain of wins with a climbing multiplier.

How the Avalanche feature works in Gonzo's Quest

A spin starts like any line slot. When a winning line forms, those symbols are removed and new ones fall into the gaps. If the new symbols make another win, the process repeats, and each consecutive avalanche raises the multiplier.

In the base game the multiplier starts at 1x and can rise to 5x across a run of avalanches. The help screen shows each step on the ladder. Once a fall produces no win, the chain ends and the multiplier resets for the next spin.

Free Falls: the bonus round

Landing three Free Fall symbols on reels 1, 2 and 3 awards 10 Free Falls. In these the ladder is far steeper: the avalanche multipliers step up through 3x, 6x, 9x and 15x. The round can also be retriggered by landing the Free Fall symbols again during it.

A worked example: a line that pays 20p becomes £3 if it lands at the 15x step during Free Falls, and £1.80 at the 9x step. The same 20p win in the base game at its 5x top step pays £1. That gap is why Free Falls carry so much of the game's potential.

Gonzo's Quest specifications and max win

In money terms, 2,500x is £250 at 10p, £1,250 at 50p and £2,500 at £1. At the £5 limit for players aged 25 and over, the cap would be £12,500. The ceiling is lower than many modern games, which partly explains the medium volatility rating.

Gonzo's Quest RTP: what a £20 session costs

At 95.97%, the game's house edge is 4.03%. To estimate the cost of any session, multiply the total staked by 4.03%. That is an average, so a real session can finish well up or well down.

Medium volatility tends to give back smaller wins more often than a high-volatility game, so a £20 balance at 10p often lasts well beyond the 200-spin figure. At £1 a spin, though, 20 losing spins in a row would end the session, and that happens.

UK rules for the Gonzo's Quest slot

Under the Gambling Commission's online slots stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab), you can stake up to £5 a spin if you are 25 or over, or £2 if you are 18 to 24. The limits took effect on 9 April 2025 and 21 May 2025 respectively.

RTS 14 (opens in a new tab) sets the design rules: a minimum 2.5 seconds per spin, no autoplay, no turbo or slam-stop and no celebrating wins equal to or less than the stake. RTS 14 also notes that the anti-turbo rule doesn't apply to bonus or feature games where no additional stake is wagered.
