Hellcatraz slot review

What is the Hellcatraz slot?

Hellcatraz is a prison-break slot from Relax Gaming, the studio founded in 2010 that began in Tallinn, Estonia, now has its headquarters in Malta and has made its own slots since 2018. Relax is best known for the Money Train series, and Hellcatraz shares that taste for extreme top prizes.

Its defining features are a big 6x6 grid, cascading wins and mystery symbols with visible countdowns. The verified details are below; for more games in this style, browse our mobile slot reviews.

Where Hellcatraz gets 46,656 ways to win

Six reels each showing six symbols give 6 x 6 x 6 x 6 x 6 x 6 = 46,656 possible paths across the grid. In a ways game, matching symbols pay when they land on adjacent reels from the left, wherever they sit on each reel, so you don't track lines at all.

A big number of ways doesn't mean a better return. The RTP is set by the game's maths, whatever the number of ways. A large count does make the screen busier, which matters on a phone, as covered below.

How the features work in Hellcatraz

Cascades

After a win, the winning symbols are cleared and new ones drop into the gaps. If they form another win, the process repeats, so a single spin can chain several cascades together.

Mystery symbols with a countdown

The grid is filled with mystery symbols, each showing a number. Every cascade knocks that number down by one. Once the count runs out, the symbol is revealed. That ties the mystery feature directly to cascades: the longer a chain runs, the more symbols reveal.

Keys and Super Free Spins

Key symbols are collected as you play, counting towards a target of 2,000 keys. Reaching it opens Super Free Spins, where mystery symbols reveal straight away rather than waiting for a countdown. That removes the slowest part of the base game for the length of the round.

Since a Gambling Commission warning in January 2020, feature buy-ins are not offered to British players, so the only route to Super Free Spins in a UK app is collecting the keys.

Hellcatraz RTP: the 96.46% Mixed Mode figure

Hellcatraz's published RTP is 96.46%, labelled Mixed Mode. The game's rules screen explains the mode and shows the RTP of the version you're actually playing, so that is the figure to rely on. At 96.46%, the house edge is 3.54%, or £3.54 per £100 staked on average.

RTP doesn't change because you play on a phone. It changes only if the operator has chosen a different approved version. Here is how to confirm it:

1. Load Hellcatraz in your casino app.
2. Open the game's menu or information button inside the game frame.
3. Find the rules page and look for the return-to-player figure and any mode description.
4. If the figure is below 96.46%, you are on a lower-return version and your expected cost per £100 is higher.

Our guide to how to find the RTP in a casino app covers this step by step for different apps.

Hellcatraz volatility on a £20 budget

High to very high volatility is the most important number on this page. Hellcatraz pays a large share of its RTP through rare, big outcomes, which means most sessions are spent losing slowly or quickly, with occasional large results. A £20 budget can vanish without a single feature.

The expected cost column is an average across huge numbers of spins. On a game this volatile, the real result of any 100 spins can sit far from it in either direction. If you want to try Hellcatraz, a stake of 10p or 20p on a £20 budget gives the key collection time to build. The house edge applies at every stake, so losses are likely over time.

Hellcatraz max win: 51,840x in pounds

The 51,840x top prize is among the largest ceilings in our slot reviews. In pounds, it looks like this. These are theoretical caps reached in extremely rare outcomes; check the casino's terms too for any payout limit of its own.

Playing the Hellcatraz slot on mobile

Thirty-six symbols, each with the chance of a countdown number, make Hellcatraz one of the busier grids to read on a small screen. As an HTML5 game it runs in casino apps and mobile browsers on iPhone and Android; how it fits portrait or landscape depends on the casino's game window, so test both.

• Turn up screen brightness or use a larger phone if the countdown numbers are hard to read.
• Long cascade chains take time to play out, and UK rules already require 2.5 seconds per spin.
• Download apps only from the App Store or Google Play; see our guide to downloading a casino app on iPhone.
• If the app closes mid-cascade, read what happens if your app crashes mid-game.

UK rules for Hellcatraz in casino apps

The Gambling Commission's online slots stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab) caps a Hellcatraz spin at £5 for players aged 25 and over and £2 for those aged 18–24. Those limits have applied since 9 April 2025 and 21 May 2025.

The design rules in RTS 14 (opens in a new tab) also apply: no autoplay, at least 2.5 seconds per spin, no turbo or slam-stop, and no celebrating a return at or below your stake. The no-speeding-up rule doesn't apply to bonus features where no extra stake is wagered. More detail sits in our game speed rules guide.

Where to play Hellcatraz with a welcome offer

We don't have an offer linked to Hellcatraz, and you'll need to check each app's lobby to see whether it is listed. Each welcome offer below is for new customers aged 18 or over, with terms applying:

• PlayOJO: 80 free spins on Big Bass Bonanza, 10p each, when you make a first deposit of at least £10. No wagering, cash winnings, not available in Northern Ireland, and not combinable with other offers.
• Coral Casino: after a qualifying deposit, bet £10 or more on slots for 100 free spins on selected games at 10p each, to accept within 48 hours and use within 7 days, no wagering on winnings. Runs to 1 February 2027; PayPal, Skrill, Neteller, Paysafe, prepaid cards and certain debit cards are excluded.
• Ladbrokes Casino: spend £10 or more on slots to get 50 free spins daily for 10 days, 500 at most, 10p each on selected games. Claim each day before 23:59; spins are valid for 7 days with no wagering. Prepaid card, PayPal, Paysafe, Neteller, Skrill and Moneybookers deposits don't count.

One operator, LC International Limited, runs both Coral and Ladbrokes, so you may not be able to hold new accounts at both. Bonus spins on a low-volatility selected slot are a very different experience from Hellcatraz, so judge each on its own terms.
