Can I use a casino app abroad?

Can I use a casino app abroad? Not for real-money play, as a rule. UK casino apps are licensed for Great Britain, and Apple and Google require them to block places outside that licence, so expect games to be unavailable once you land. Your account and balance don't disappear, though, and a little preparation before you travel avoids most problems.

Key takeaways

  • UK-licensed casino apps must be geo-restricted, so real-money games are normally blocked abroad.
  • Your balance remains yours; how the operator protects customer funds is set out in its terms.
  • Operators don't publish what account features work abroad, so check before you go.
  • A UK licence gives no permission to gamble under another country's law.
  • Don't use a VPN to get round the block: it can cause account problems.

Can I use a casino app abroad? The short answer

If you're on holiday in Spain, working in Dubai or visiting family in Ireland, your UK casino app will normally refuse real-money play. That isn't a fault: the app is doing what its licence and the app stores require. Your phone, your account and your money are all still there; it's the gambling that switches off.

This answer sits in our casino app questions hub. For the technical side of how apps work out where you are, see whether casino apps can see your location, and our longer guide to using a casino app abroad has more travel detail.

Why UK casino apps stop working when you travel

Apple's App Review Guidelines (opens in a new tab) say real-money gaming apps must be licensed in the locations where they're used and geo-restricted to those locations. Google's gambling app policy (opens in a new tab) requires apps to prevent access from any country or area the developer's licence doesn't cover.

A Gambling Commission licence covers Great Britain. Unless the same operator also holds a licence in the country you're visiting, and runs its app there, the app has no permission to take your bets. Operators can hold other licences (PlayOJO's operator, Skill On Net, also holds a Malta Gaming Authority licence), but that doesn't mean your UK account works abroad. Our guide on how casino apps are licensed in the UK explains the licence types.

Exactly what an app shows when it blocks you, and whether you can still log in to see your balance, isn't published by our partners. Some apps may let you into your account; others may stop at the first screen. Treat any access abroad as a bonus rather than something to rely on.

What happens to your balance and withdrawals abroad

Money in your casino account doesn't stop being yours because you've crossed a border. Every licensed operator must tell you how it protects customer funds, rated as not protected, medium or high protection, and the Commission's guide on what happens to your money if a gambling business goes bust (opens in a new tab) explains each level.

UK rules also say you can't be given the option to cancel a withdrawal once it's requested (RTS 14B in the Commission's responsible product design standard (opens in a new tab)). So if you request a withdrawal before you travel, it should keep moving while you're away. Published processing times vary: Coral and Ladbrokes say Visa Fast Funds approval typically takes a couple of hours and then up to 4 hours to reach the bank, while PlayOJO says it processes most payments within a few hours.

PlayOJO's note matters for travellers: its help page says live chat availability depends on your country, so email may be the dependable route from abroad. The PlayOJO app review and our guide to how to withdraw from a casino app have more.

What to do with your casino app before you travel

  1. Decide whether you want your balance while you're away; if so, request a withdrawal a few days before you leave.
  2. Check your deposit limits and other safer-gambling settings, so nothing needs changing from abroad.
  3. Note the operator's support email, since live chat may not be available from another country.
  4. Turn off marketing notifications if you don't want offers you can't use while travelling.
  5. Leave the app installed or delete it; deleting the app doesn't close your account or touch your balance.
  6. When you're back in Great Britain, update the app before logging in again.

Our guides to turning off casino app notifications and what happens to your balance if you delete the app help with steps four and five.

Will the casino app still be on my phone abroad?

An app you've already installed stays on your phone when you travel. What changes is the store around it. App Store and Google Play listings are country-specific, and gambling apps only appear in markets where they're permitted; Google keeps a published list of countries allowing gambling apps (opens in a new tab), with the United Kingdom on it.

The same app can even look different from one country to another. PlayOJO's iPhone app appears as "PlayOJO Real Money Casino" on the UK App Store, but the same app ID shows as "PlayOJO Ontario: Online Casino" on the Canadian store. That's a reminder that each market has its own licence and its own version of the service. Our iPhone download guide covers installing back at home.

Gambling laws in other countries

Every country sets its own gambling rules, and some ban online casino play outright. Your UK licence-holder's protections, such as GAMSTOP, approved dispute resolution and Gambling Commission oversight, are built for Great Britain and don't carry over to gambling you do under another country's rules.

Be wary of local sites or apps that advertise to travellers. An app without a recognised licence offers no UKGC protection at all, and our guide to spotting an unlicensed casino app lists the warning signs. Northern Ireland is a special case within the UK; see playing casino apps in Northern Ireland.

Using a VPN to reach a UK casino app abroad

No, and it isn't worth trying. Masking your location works against the geo-restriction the app stores require, it may breach the operator's terms, and it can leave you in breach of local law where you are. Problems with an account, including with withdrawals, are a real risk. Our answer on using a VPN with a casino app explains in more detail.

If the urge to play while away feels hard to resist, that's worth paying attention to. The National Gambling Helpline (0808 8020 133) is free and open 24/7, and our page on taking a time-out explains how a short break works.

Frequently asked questions

Can I play on a UK casino app while on holiday?

Usually not for real money. UK casino apps are licensed for Great Britain, and Apple and Google require them to block places outside the licence, so games are normally unavailable abroad. Your account and balance remain yours. Sort out withdrawals and limits before you leave; our guide to using a casino app abroad has a fuller checklist.

Can I log in to my casino app from abroad?

It depends on the operator, and our partners don't publish how their apps behave abroad. Some may let you see your account; others may block access at the start. Don't rely on it. If you need help, email support, as live chat may be limited by country, as PlayOJO notes. Our page on casino app login problems covers other causes of failed logins.

Can I withdraw from a casino app while I'm abroad?

A withdrawal you requested before travelling should keep processing, because UK rules stop operators offering to cancel a withdrawal once requested. Making a new request from abroad depends on whether the app lets you in. Plan ahead and request it before you leave. Published times are listed in how long casino app withdrawals take.

Does a UK casino app work in Ireland?

Expect it not to work for real-money play. The Republic of Ireland is outside the Gambling Commission's licence area, so a UK-licensed app must block it unless the operator is separately licensed and set up there. Our dedicated answer on using a UK casino app in Ireland explains the position in more detail.

Does my GAMSTOP exclusion still apply when I'm abroad?

GAMSTOP blocks you from online gambling companies licensed in Great Britain for the period you chose, and that doesn't depend on where you happen to be. It can't cover operators licensed elsewhere. If you've self-excluded and feel tempted abroad, call the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133. Our GAMSTOP guide explains how it works.

Will a casino app update while I'm in another country?

Updates come through the App Store or Google Play account on your phone, and gambling apps are only listed in markets where they're permitted. Whether an update appears while you're abroad isn't something operators publish. The simplest approach is to update when you're back in Great Britain before logging in. The steps are in how to update a casino app.

Is it illegal to use a casino app abroad?

It can be, depending on the country. Each country sets its own gambling laws, and a UK licence gives no permission to gamble under another country's rules. That's one reason UK apps block play abroad. Masking your location to get round the block can breach operator terms as well as local law. Read our answer on whether casino apps are legal in the UK for the home position.

What happens to my casino balance if I move abroad?

Your balance stays yours, held under the operator's published customer funds arrangement. If you're moving permanently, it makes sense to withdraw it and close the account rather than leave money in an app you can't use. Closed-loop payment policies mean withdrawals usually return to the method you deposited with. Our guide on how to close a casino account walks you through it.
