Thunderstruck slot: a 2004 classic, now with Games Global

Thunderstruck first appeared in 2004 under the Microgaming name. In 2022 a new company, Games Global, took over Microgaming’s games portfolio and distribution business, so that is the name you will usually see on the game today.

Games Global is headquartered in Douglas, Isle of Man, and is regulated by the Gambling Commission. Its catalogue includes Mega Moolah, Immortal Romance and Thunderstruck II, the 243-ways sequel.

How the features work

Thunderstruck has two special symbols, Thor and the ram, and one bonus round.

Thor, the doubling wild

Thor substitutes for every symbol except the ram scatter. When he completes a winning line, that line pays double. A line worth 25p on its own pays 50p with Thor in it.

Rams and 15 free spins

Three or more rams trigger 15 free spins. Every win during the round is tripled, so the same 25p line pays 75p. Landing rams again during free spins retriggers the round for more spins.

  1. Spin the nine paylines in the base game; Thor doubles any line he completes.
  2. Land three or more rams to start 15 free spins.
  3. Every free-spin win pays three times its normal value.
  4. More rams during the round retrigger it; the help screen confirms the details.

Exactly how the Thor doubling combines with the free-spin tripling is set out in the game’s help screen. Read it there rather than relying on figures quoted elsewhere.

Thunderstruck vs Thunderstruck II

Many players search for one and find the other, so it helps to know how different they are. The sequel keeps the Norse theme but rebuilds almost everything else.

Thunderstruck II has the higher RTP and a more varied bonus, while the original is simpler and quicker to learn. If you like Games Global’s multi-stage bonus format, Immortal Romance uses the same idea with a vampire theme.

Thunderstruck RTP: what medium volatility means for £20

At 96.1% RTP the house edge is 3.9%, or £3.90 for every £100 staked over the long run. Medium volatility means wins come along more regularly than in high-volatility games, though usually smaller.

10p200£100£3.90
50p40£500£19.50
£120£1,000£39

At 2.5 seconds per spin, the fastest UK apps allow, 1,000 spins take at least 42 minutes; most people play more slowly. The expected-loss column is the long-run average; real sessions swing above and below it. Wizard of Odds’ slot explainer (opens in a new tab) is a clear outside guide to how RTP and volatility interact.

Why nine paylines matters

Nine lines is fewer than many slots use, including the 10-line Novomatic classics and 243-ways games. Your total stake is spread across the lines, so the per-line amount is your stake divided by nine. With fewer lines, any one spin has fewer chances to connect, which is part of why the doubling wild and the triple-pay round matter so much.

The paytable lists what each symbol pays per line at your chosen stake, which is the most reliable way to judge the top possible win. Our paytable glossary entry explains how to read one.

Thunderstruck on iPhone and Android apps

The game dates from 2004, but the versions in today’s apps use HTML5 and run in iOS and Android casino apps or a mobile browser. Whether a particular app carries the original as well as the sequel varies, so check the app’s game lobby.

  1. Complete your age and identity checks; UK apps require them before any play.
  2. Search for “Thunderstruck” and make sure you have the 2004 original, not Thunderstruck II.
  3. Open the help screen to confirm the RTP and the free-spin rules.
  4. Choose your stake; UK limits are £5 a spin at 25 and over, £2 at 18 to 24.
  5. Play one spin at a time and keep an eye on the net spend display.

UK rules on the Thunderstruck slot

  • Stake limits of £5 per spin for ages 25 and over and £2 for ages 18 to 24, from the dates in the Gambling Commission’s online slots stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab).
  • No autoplay, a 2.5-second minimum spin and no turbo or slam stop, since 31 October 2021.
  • Wins that only match or fall below the stake can’t be dressed up with celebratory effects.
  • Net spend and time on screen while you play.
  • Game rules and RTP information must be available, under the Commission’s game description standard (opens in a new tab).

Frequently asked questions

What is the RTP of Thunderstruck?

Thunderstruck has a published RTP of 96.1%, a house edge of 3.9%. Over a very large number of spins, it is designed to return about £96.10 for every £100 staked, though any one session can be far from that. The sequel, Thunderstruck II, is higher at 96.65%. Check the figure in your app’s help screen; our guide to finding a game’s RTP shows how.

How do you trigger free spins on Thunderstruck?

Land three or more ram scatter symbols to trigger 15 free spins. During the round, every win is tripled, and more rams can retrigger it. UK apps don’t offer a bonus buy, so the round only comes from normal spins. For the difference between this feature and promotional spins, see our guide to free spins in casino apps.

Who makes the Thunderstruck slot?

Thunderstruck was made by Microgaming and released in 2004. Games Global, set up in 2022, took over Microgaming’s games portfolio and distribution business, so the game now sits in the Games Global catalogue. Games Global is based in Douglas, Isle of Man, and is regulated by the Gambling Commission. See our Games Global slots page.

Is Thunderstruck better than Thunderstruck II?

It depends on what you want. Thunderstruck is simpler, with nine lines and one free-spins round at triple pay. Thunderstruck II has 243 ways, a Wildstorm feature, a four-stage bonus, a higher RTP of 96.65% and an 8,000× cap. Both are medium volatility. If RTP is your priority, the sequel wins. Read our Thunderstruck II review to compare.

Is Thunderstruck high or low volatility?

Thunderstruck is rated medium volatility. That means wins tend to arrive more regularly than in high-volatility games, but they are usually smaller, with the triple-pay free spins providing most of the bigger results. A £20 budget gives 200 spins at 10p if nothing comes back. Our volatility glossary entry explains what the rating means.

What does Thor do in Thunderstruck?

Thor is the wild symbol. He substitutes for every symbol except the ram scatter and doubles the payout of any line he helps complete. A 30p line becomes 60p with Thor in it. In free spins, wins are tripled as well; the game’s help screen sets out how the two multipliers apply together. Our multiplier glossary entry has more.

Can I play Thunderstruck on my phone?

Yes. The version in today’s casino apps runs in HTML5, so it works in iPhone and Android apps and in mobile browsers. Not every app carries the 2004 original alongside the sequel, so search the lobby by name first. Our list of the best casino apps for Android compares the partner apps.

Is there autoplay on Thunderstruck in the UK?

No. Autoplay has been banned on online slots in Great Britain since 31 October 2021, so you start each spin yourself. Spins must also last at least 2.5 seconds, with no turbo or slam stop. These rules apply in every UK-licensed app. Our explainer on why there’s no autoplay on UK apps covers the reasons.
